We know that most of you are going crazy with end of the year, holiday madness... either with travel, family, and/or gatherings. We hope that you are all safe, warm, and happy as we roll into the new year!
We're very excited about 2008 and have lots planned. Those that have been with us for some time now, may have seen all the changes and adventures we've had over the 5 years that we've been doing this. We're only still here because of you! We appreciate all of you who continue to support what we do here. Thank YOU!
The hemp industry is growing! and sometimes we feel like a little boat in the middle of the shipping lanes. Our hemp has been on backorder and delayed in the export/import process from China for almost 6 months. Our supplier is the best in the quality and variety of hemp fabric, but they can't keep production and supply high enough to the demand they're getting. (Plus a small business like we are can't invest in enough stock to get through these dry spells). But we've heard the hemp/cotton muslin is on it's way and all reserved fabric is already sold out again, so we need to stock what we've pre-ordered. We're taking custom orders on our hand dyed hemp muslin, so please email me with any requests and orders.
We're catching up as the end of the year approaches. We got our last boxes sent out and are finishing up our last custom dye orders. Our online dye schedule hasn't stayed up to speed, but since I have the week off work I'm clearing things out and updating all that I can. Which includes a 20% off End of the Year sale in our Etsy shop: http://www.alteredstatement.etsy.com and you won't want to miss it! Sale ends sometime around the 3rd... when every we recover from New Year's Eve...
Enjoy this season and we'll see you in 2008! (We've been working hard to finish some amazing new one of a kind designs, and we can't wait to share them with you!)

This is definitely a good read: http://www.boomantribune.com/?op=displaystory;sid=2007/11/24/123220/26 where I found it on http://www.hempreport.com/ which is also a good site to check.

"...I am a senior at Oak Mountain High School in Shelby County, Alabama. On August 16, 2007, I was forced to remove my shirt and to change into one provided to me because the shirt had the word "hemp" on it. The principals claimed that because hemp is associated with marijuana and that school and county rules claim you cannot wear clothing that refers to illegal substances, that I could no longer wear the shirt. I explained to them the difference between hemp and marijuana and explained that because hemp is legal in the United States that the rule did not apply. They refused to acknowledge the facts that I presented to them and forced me to change shirts. I am absolutely disgusted in the suppression of my freedom of speech and the suppression of the hemp movement in my school... Brian Simpson..."

"...While your explanation shows the different definitions of "hemp," your fellow students and the community at large perceive it to symbolize marijuana. A similar comparison to this would be the controversial wearing of the Confederate Flag. Even though some people view the flag as a symbol of heritage, many people believe it connotes oppression are highly offended by its presence...Randy Fuller, Superintendent Shelby County Schools..."

"...you can actually continue to wear your hemp jewelry, purses, clothes, footwear, and socks. You can also continue using your other hemp products such as your lip balm, lotion, and soap; as long as the products do not openly display the word "Hemp" as my shirt did. Strange, huh? I can go to lunch directly after I wash my hands with my Dr. Bronner's hemp soap in 100% hemp apparel and eat my hemp granola bar with my hemp napkin along side, yet I cannot wear a shirt with a message containing the word "Hemp."..."

So what did his shirt say?!?? "Widespread Hemp / Don't Panic, It's Hemp."
ahh the irony...

"With his state's blessing, North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Roger Johnson is backing the farmers and has proposed modeling North Dakota's hemp laws after Canada's strict regulations."

"Johnson said the farmers' Vote Hemp-funded lawsuit has no hidden agenda. It's aimed solely at allowing farmers to grow hemp -- without going to jail because federal law says hemp and marijuana are the same.

"I've got a state Legislature saying they aren't and the entire world saying they aren't. This is about a crop that is a legitimate crop every place else in the world," Johnson said. "It's not a crusade thing. It's a crop. Let farmers grow it. We don't want anyone to be growing drugs."

"Notoriety obscures the history and value of hemp. Hemp has a long history in America, from the first plantings in Jamestown, where growing hemp was mandatory, to the hemp sails of 19th-century clipper ships and the hemp canvas covers of pioneer wagons, to World War II's massive "Hemp for Victory" program. Hemp is a major part of humanity's agricultural and commercial heritage, having been used extensively for millennia in cultures around the world.

Beginning with the passage of the "Marihuana Tax Act" of 1937 and continuing after the World War II "Hemp for Victory" program, misplaced fears that industrial hemp is marijuana and harassment by law enforcement discouraged farmers from growing hemp. The last crop was grown in Wisconsin in 1958, and the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) of 1970 formally prohibited cultivation.

Today, driven by entrepreneurial spirit and the desire to build a new industry for a new age, hemp has reemerged. A diverse but increasingly unified and politically influential group of interests supports the commercial growing of hemp, including farmers, businesses, nutritionists, activists, and green consumers."

I may be one with 'exaggerated claims for cannabis as a solution to most the world's problems' but I also strive to learn about the issues and know that it's only through education that we can separate the lines between facts and propaganda. I believe that when the 'hempsters' and hempfests don't live up to their name they only add to the stereotypes and cloud the lines between issues.

Here at Altered Statement

We believe, as do many people, that hemp could change the world. How can a natural 'weed' like plant change our lives? Hemp can be used in variety of everyday items. Hemp fabric is a superior fabric with mold and mildew resistance, it's longer lasting, and wears "in" instead of "out". Hemp's long natural fibers can be used for superior paper and even partical board to build houses. It's oil can be used in health care products (lotions, soaps, etc) and in fuels for heat, energy, and in cars. Hemp seed oil contains a rich source of Omega-3 fatty acids, excellent nutrition. "Hemp is a renewable resource that is good for the environment. Its strong roots help control erosion, and it needs very little water to grow. When cultivating the fibers, practically no chemicals are needed since the material naturally resists pests. And the natural look of hemp is so great that no bleaching is required".

It is important to us to support hemp as much as possible and we want to promote it's superior quality. With our top quality sewing and the addition of hemp fabrics and our beautiful fiber reactive hand-dyeing it is becoming very hard to keep costs down and the prices of our hemp items are a reflection of this top quality. We know that you will agree that the price is worth it!

China is the top producing country when it comes to hemp and most fabrics are imported from there. That is not to say that China is the ONLY country producing hemp fabrics, but since they have been producing hemp fibers for THOUSANDS of years and they are not as influenced by the US and it's laws surrounding industrial hemp, China is the most effective producer of hemp fabrics. It is legal to import and use hemp, but it is still illegal to produce and grow hemp here in the United States. We could be supporting ourselves with bio-fuels instead of oil from the Middle East, saving trees and eco-systems in our own backyard, and benefiting from the many uses of hemp, but until we as a country can advocate for industrial hemp, educate our people, and vote for those who will change the laws, we are must continue to order from other countries. Please take a stand and make a difference.

Here at Altered Statement we believe that by using and supporting hemp clothing in general, it is a first step in the supply and demand of hemp fabric. With more demand and political changing we can further the availability of hemp choices. Please help us educate, promote and support the hemp revolution!
