Seeking windpower info

topic posted Sat, July 29, 2006 - 9:05 AM by  Fortuna
A public utility has expressed interest in using my land as a means to build and support a 20mgw windpower farm on private land near mine. They also want to run transmission lines on my property. I am looking for a knowledgeable individual who can help define the impact and value of this project for me. I have done a bit of research on the web, but really need info that is more specific. Any referrals or suggestions would be appreciated!

I'm not sure if you could get someone to spend the time & effort with you but I think it would be worth a shot to try to speak with whomever manages the various windfarms in CA. If they have the time I bet they could help you out alot.

There is a whole bunch of "alt" type of reasons to avoid living under or near high-power transmission lines. You might end up wearing a colander on your head to keep the beams from your brain :)

But seriously... investigate that before you sign anything. Here's a Google search www.google.com/search

        Thanks Paul,

I am wading through the articles, trying to get a grasp on the effects, and variables. The project is 20MW, The power lines they propose will be 69 Kv.

No one is living on this parcel (99 acres) at this time. I may live there in the future. (I am currently getting ready to sail to Micronesia!). I may also sub divide the land at a later date.

The proposal is that they run the power lines down the south property line, which would be away from the areas I would prefer to develop. But how far away is far enough?

I am torn about this project; I want to facilitate clean evergy, and I stand to benefit financially.

If we all say "not in my backyard" to clean power, where will we end up?

Supportin clean power is good but once you get the nominal fee from them you are locked in. So make sure first and then ask for more$. My uncle got a cell tower put on his land and they gave him some $ but he ended up wishing he had not made the deal. Then I think he cut a piece of the tower frame off for some project and got in a bunch of trouble.

Good point.... forever is long time. Get a lawyer. Consider something like renewable leases; not a lifetime easement. Make the rate of lease payment pegged to the $/kWh they charge retail.

              Yeah,
Renewable Lease is the way to go. The power co wanted to buy the land or the portion that they require. I turned them down. I've found lots of info on how deals work with people hosting windmills, but no info on the easements. So, if anyone knows of a good attorney that is knowegable about these things, please let me know.
I may at some point generate my own power, and net meter as was discussed in another post.
