I have plans to make the family farm completely self sufficient through a combination of biofuel/wind/solar energy. Eventually i will be producing more than consuming. Someone once told me that it was possible to sell or trade excess energy to the power companies. This is a long term project, and i dont expect to be doing this soon, but i really have no idea where to start. A few of my questions.
First, is it even possible?
How would i go about setting the deal up with the company?
What additional installations/equipment would it require?
Is it worth it, moneywise?
Hopefully someone has done this already. I dont know where to start and i need encouragement.

Re: Selling Electricity back to the Grid?
Wed, April 4, 2007 - 12:22 PMEvery state, locality and utility district has its own unique set of policies. But I believe it is a federal policy that excess energy produced by an individual must be bought back.
Worth it? Depends on the local policy and rates. I heard that in California (Palm Springs) people pay more per kWh than what they are paid for excess kWh.
But in the bigger scheme of things it is worth it. You can be simply self-sufficient, or you could help your neighbors and utility be less dependent their current sources. -

Re: Selling Electricity back to the Grid?
Wed, April 4, 2007 - 4:37 PMI think its worth it. even if u sold it for half its value, its still money. I have heard that some if not most policies only allow "energy credits" instead of cash trades. Really, that is fine with me especially because electric prices are rising. Ive also learned that most companies are only obligated to buy back a certain amount. Still, i figure in the long end, it is enough to satisfy our needs for free, and well anything extra just adds up. And if it was in credits thats cool, i can trade them to anyone supposedly? Family and friends would get reduced price on energy, plus i make a little extra? seems like win/win. cept i guess power company makes money off of me... hm just thought about that -

Re: Selling Electricity back to the Grid?
Fri, April 6, 2007 - 3:07 PMI really don't want to turn you away from this because I approve very much of people making thier own energy. However, I know a small bit about this, and it is a very difficult thing. Firstly, power companies have a lot of money and pull, they don't wnat to lose either. Hence they make it very difficult for the "small farm power plant" by requiring special licenses. You CAN get them, it is difficult. Also they won't pay you for your power (at least not around here) they give you credit towards power you might get from them in the future. Secondly the set-up is a little difficult. My electrician friend said you need a special switch (expencive) that will allow your power source to feed your house when it needs it and the grid when you are not using electricity. That being said Obviously we need to be using alternative sources for our power and doing what you want to do is what we all should be doing. Also lots and lots of small power plants makes a much more efficient system than a big power plant as a supplier. We lose huge amounts of power off the lines into the air because power doesn't travel long distances very well. -

Re: Selling Electricity back to the Grid?
Thu, April 12, 2007 - 8:15 AMI've noticed it is a very difficult thing indeed. So ive been emailin my power provider for like 2 months and they finally responded, they claim that there are absolutely no programs to trade energy for money/credits/anything. Im pretty sure this is bs, since there is a federal law mandating that there are programs available... Hmmm.. Really, it doesnt make sense, because it is a good deal for ALL, including the power company, they get cheap electricity, that they sell for 2x as much, without doing anything. I get free energy, and a little extra cash or credits which i would probably sell to my friends for cheaper then the power company would sell them.. Im trying to make this work and i have not given up yet. Guess im gonna have to dig some more. -
