I first have to explain the term <public> in terms of schooling. In 19th century Britain, all education was as a result of private funding. Private schools were set up and funded by shipbuilders, teachers, Catholics, printers, Jews, you name it….for the benefit of their children and to further their particular doctrine. They were self funded by donation or by union or social funds. Those that could afford to look outwith the confines of such schools could pay to send their children to <public> schools i.e. schools open to all creeds and doctrines where education and not partisan interests came first...so long as you could afford it. Hence, today, we have the misnomer that <public> schools are strictly private, for the rich and the most elite in the land.
In those days, public schooling was only for the rich and only for boys. Schools were cold drafty places. Senior boys had their own rooms and were assigned a junior boy to run their errands including collecting firewood. A bundle of sticks for firewood is called a <faggot> so these junior boys, whose job it was to collect wood and light the fires of the senior boys rooms, became known as <faggots> or <fags>. It was also a verb e.g. <Jones fags for me>…meaning he is my servant. Teenage boys being teenage boys, in all boys boarding schools, (in those days the only girls those boys met were their sisters) had certain needs….. so junior boys assumed (or were forced to assume) <other> duties. And so <fag> became synonymous with boys who bent over to be sodomised.
So now you know….<fag> in gay terms does not mean homosexual in general but bottom in particular and its transition to an insulting term rests mainly with gay men who considered <bottom> to equal <inferior>.

Thu, March 15, 2007 - 6:18 PMI don't know what "pommy" means.
It's a pretty interesting article. I've always known about the "bundle of sticks" definition of fag, but not the rest. I shared it with my roommates and they enjoyed it too. Thanks! -

Thu, March 15, 2007 - 6:24 PMPommie refers to <POHM> ..Prisoner Of Her Majesty….i.e. convicts bound for Australia. I am neither Australain nor a convict.
Australians slightingly refer to people from the UK as pommies.
I am Scottish. My disdane for <pommie> i.e. <English> culture outweighs both the Aussie convicts and the above poster (whose name, alas, I have aready forgotten <but he is probably a bottom>.
And...stop being so sychophantic Lucian, you created this tribe for alternatives....live with it. -

Thu, March 15, 2007 - 9:57 PMMolly you old tart, isn't faggots also some kind of pommie meat dish? and I'm not sure about you're definition of pommie there, it isn't always used as a put-down and is sometimes simply used in the same way as one might call an aussie an aussie.
btw, why do the scot's keep putting a team in the world cup?
"Pommy |ˈpämē| (also Pommie) noun ( pl. -mies) Austral./NZ, informal offensive a British person. ORIGIN early 20th cent.: of unknown origin; said by some to be short for pomegranate, as a near rhyme to immigrant, but evidence is lacking." -

Re: Proper insulting begins with education...
Thu, March 15, 2007 - 10:41 PMwhat ever the definition it certainly applies to all UK people and goes well as
winging pom (it's better at home, there are no clouds here)
dirty pom (once a week showers)
bloody or fucking poms encumbers all of them
and before you call me a decedent of convicts (of which I could be proud) I was not even born in this, my country, which I guess makes me an aussie wog :) -

Sun, March 18, 2007 - 2:55 PMmolly, dear like Arco says "pom" refers to ALL people from the u.k. and last time I checked the I.R.A. still hadn't won so the U.K. is still England, Scotland, Wales and Nothern Ireland.
I was born in Australia and it's fine with me that some pommie considers me vulgar, we're like that down here. -

Hey, I resemble that remark.......or a viking-raped version of one anyway.
And you thought Red hair was Irish-HA!
There's a topic for yah.
Where did RED hair originate?
Why do people think it's Irish?
Scandanavian, maybe.
Who inbred whom? -

Mon, March 19, 2007 - 8:14 AMI always thought red-heads were from Iceland, and anyway, aren't they closely related to blondes? -

Re: Proper insulting begins with education...
Tue, March 20, 2007 - 3:49 PMWasn't Iceland vacation spot for the Vikings? Isn't that why they called it Iceland? So no one else would go there?
This seems to go with my theory.
So I tend to agree. Blonde / Red Blue eyed Norsmen conquering the Pics/Highlanders/Irish. Leaving their legacy behind.
I know plenty of Irish FROM the isle. They're all pug, with brown/black hair.
I'm the smallest of my litter at 6'2" and blonde. Mind you, I've been "mutated" by generations, but they've all been Welsh & Irish...which means I should STILL be pug with brown/black hair..........???
