Look it up. It has many different spins on its meaning. What's alternative to one person may not be the truth for another. It's become part of a catch-all phrase attempting to describe something unlike or different from another.

I find the title of this tribe, and the 2 others of a similar name, humorous. (Yes, yes, I know, I named it and thus am poking fun at myself.) But truthfully, the word has become so watered down, I'm not sure it has a clear meaning any more that all of us could ever agree on.

The more that main stream society has accepted us (gay folk), the less of a gay cliche we're becoming. I'm recognizing more and more of a uniqueness to gay individuals all over the world. We each bring to the table a variety of experiances, hopes, dreams, talents, and fresh perspectives more so than I've ever noticed before. We are as diverse as our heterosexual counterparts. So what's "alternative" any more? I'm really not sure...

I think more than anything capitalists try and exploit any market they can and hence drag peripheral movemenst into the realm of "fashion". Some people swallow it and claim an "alternative' or "independent" "role" in society, when they are just fashionistas - people like matthew and jack for instance.

Others seem to take it way more seriously and truly live apart and very different from society - people like synnerjism for instance.

me i think I'm somewhere in the middle of that, I lack the courage to live "outdoors' or too transient and I have nothing but contempt for the fashion and snobs.

Mick. Look, you know I'm your friend. But please, for my sake, let's not bring up those 2 guys names on this tribe. Neither are present to speak for themselves, and frankly this is old business anyway. You will only end up chopping the legs out from under me as I try desperately to breath life into this new and evolving tribe.

You're a very smart and articulate man. Save it for new and more interesting matters.

      Please. For me.

o.k. lucian no worries it may have been gratuitous of me to mention those two, but that itself aside, what do you think of the point I'm making?

          Thank you, Mick.

Well, I agree with you to a point. Living/working in Washington DC and seeing how money and politics work in this country, yes I agree that, "capitalists try and exploit any market they can,..." - but you kind of lost me on, - " and hence drag peripheral movemenst into the realm of fashion."

You kind of have to take that on a case by case basis I think. For example, I have a relatively "white collar" job where I ought to be wearing a nice shirt and tie....pfffffffffft! But I don't..lol! I push the envelope as far as I can get away with my appearence. I hate ties and the corporate environment that they represent. Yet I'm part of that machine! So I have to find my own little rebellious ways to express myself as an individual.

Synnerjism (a Radical Faerie we both respect), is truly the exception. He never compromises his appearence for the sake of others. IRL we go to some of the same events, though I'll confess I don't know him on a personal level other than in his writings.

If I misunderstood you points, please let me know. :-)

(I had to delete and repost this because of all the grammatical errors....my bad!)

hhhhmmm the old I work in the mainstream yet feel I'm a radical person is as old as the hills. I'm not sure it's totally valid as an "alternative' lifestyle choice.

we live in a world where appearances count for a lot much of the time. if your appearance is of no or little "cost" in your life, such as if you're wealthy or come from the upper/middle classes than are you really "alternative" or just on holidays?
If you're working class but you look "different' you're going to find it hard getting a job (for instance) no matter how intelligent or capable you are, does that in turn "force" one to the margins of society?

me I don't think I look all that different from the crowd but I do everything I can to remain separate (as opposed to distinct) from a society I generally feel disgust for, no matter what it "costs" me.

There's nothing in your post that I can disagree with. Point for point.
But currently in America we are controlled by a republican government. My views on a whole hosts of issues are polar opposite to thiers. Thus working in such an uber conservative environment as an openly gay democrat automatically makes me "alternative." At least, in the current situation I'm in. (I have direct exposure to these folks.)

yeah, I wasn't actually thinking of you personally, I was thinking of those people who DO wear the shirt and tie to work and do nothing whatsoever out of place yet "break out' on the week-ends as if they are somehow "alternative" to the dominant paradigm, or worse, those homosexual men who work within the system and hold places of power yet have been exceedingly detrimental to all other gay people i.e. Ernst Roehm, J. Edgar Hoover, Roy Cohn. As well as those conservative politicians who seem to get caught with their male lovers at regular intervals.

What little I really know about the true circumstances of the U.S. scares me. It scares me because my own country is headed in your direction and has been for at least the past 30 odd years. The reality of your health, education and welfare systems is frightening to say the least, and understanding that I can hardly blame anyone for doing the necesessary things to hold onto a decent level of wages and conditions. When one considers your political system and the people in power, it's really not hard to see how the vast majority of the population would be "alternative" to it and them. I'm just not so sure THAT is actually "alternative".
