I find V-day to be annoying really. Mainly because I'm single and I'm pretty discouraged about daing anyone right now. I suppose I could buy myself some flowers and take myself out to dinner...lol!

I wonder what could be a fun alternative to thing to do on Valentines Day this year?
Any Ideas? Dress in black and scowl at happy couples? Hmmm...I'm just having fun... :-)

Hillary or Obama?

I know it's always risky to bring up politics in any group, but I'm not afraid to talk about anything. I think it's healthy to think and discuss.

So for those of you following the American political scene: Hillary or Obama?

I'm an Obama supporter myself. I'm tired of the Bush-Clinton dynasty.
However if Hillary gets the nomination, I'll vote for her of course.

I live in Maryland (DC suburbs), we have our primary this Tuesday...

What makes you "alternative?"

Alternative to so-called mainstream gay culture? I'm not even sure I know what that means anymore. I know I don't have much interest in gay bars and such, but I'm fine with gay culture. I just don't feel there's much for me there. I'm too busy living Life I guess.

I'm more into my small community of close, freaky friends out here in the burbs of DC, where I live. Radical Faeries, Gay Metalheads, and moutain biking nuts like me.....are more my cup of tea.

Why do You feel like you're alternative? Why did you take an interest in joining this tribe? What direction, if any would you like to see it take? We have severial new members here now and this tribe has been kinda quiet for a while. So what can we do to make it more interesting?

Please express yourself. This tribe is for YOU. Please participate.

Thanks!

Alternative Christmas?

What does this time of the year mean to You?

We do celebrate Christmas, but not in the traditional christian way. I'm a pagan who enjoys many of the "normal" rituals we all grew up with but tend to exclude the churchie part of things. I look forward to extended time off work for the holiday. But more so to have the chance to have have friends and family over for food and drinks. I love to cook so this is a great time of the year to connect with people and socialize.

Regardles of who you are and what your upbringing is as it pertains to the holiday season, I hope everyone has a good Christmas and safely survives New Years Eve!

Take care,
Lucian

What's new, different, or out of step that you've done lately? It's easy to get all caught up in our normal routines, isn't it.

I went to a chinese store of herbs and teas today. I couldn't understand a damn thing the clerk was saying to me. I didn't care. I bought a bunch of stuff any way. I don't really know much about tea. I'm more of a coffee drinker. I was shocked to see that Jasmine green tea ranged from about $38 to $125 a pound, depending on the quality. I felt I shoud have gotten complentary hash or opium for shopping there! lol! No such luck.

what's new You?

Are gays just up their own arse?

I did just what Lucian asked...posted a different topic..and ..oh look..

So...given the choice of marching for peace, end to poverty, hunger, slavery et al or marching for gay rights....what would you do?

As a woman (figuratively speaking) I have grown up with <dumb blonde>, <glass ceilings> etc...in the army I shrugged off more sexist remarks and actions that (had they been said or done to a black or gay man would have meant possible jail time). Did it hurt me? More than you know. Hell, at the sillier end, I apparently cannot even drive well and am best at <homemaking>. Women in some parts of the world are <goods> ...slaves.... So, i guess I should support womans groups.

I dont. I support those that do not have the means to help themselves. Man, woman or animal. If one muslim wife and 4 daughters want to subjegate themselves to one puny husband/father...go girls...

So why is it that ALL the gay people I know (and I know a fair few) cannot see beyond THEIR rights, THEIR grief, how the world does THEM wrong? Sure...they chat about other stuff but within 10 mins of any conversation on any topic its right back at them...<<.Africans may be hungry but I bet they would they would have got into that club...its cos i am gay...>>

Is the gay gene linked to the terminally self obessed gene?

Do you think "Gay Pride Festivals" are obsolete?

I do.

I think "Gay Pride Day" and their festivals ment a lot more 10, 15, or even 20 years ago. But now, with gay culture so predominately mixed in with mainstream culture, I don't really see the need to stop and yell, "Hey! I'm Gay and I'm proud of it!" Give me a fucking break.

The reality is, "Hey I'm a hardworking, tax paying, adult man doing my best to be a contributing member to society and live a happy, healthy life." Oh and by the way, I also happen to be Gay. So fucking what!? lol!

Is there still a need for "Gay Pride?" What do you think?

love or hate

I just went to the film festival (gay and lesbian) and was just thinking how lucky we were to have such a well organized weekend with so many great films you just can't get anywhere else and have a casual time for the community to connect and see each other. I was telling Mark how difficult it was to go to my first festival because just crossing the street and going to fhe festival seemed like a huge risk.

Last year was my first PRIDE march (but that is another story). I only mention it because of the "God hates Fags" contingency that showed up. It is a painful experience to walk past people that are verbally attacking you. I was thinking about how lucky we are that in 12 years of the flilm festival, I don't remember anyone from this contingency showing up (can you guess where this is headed).

I went to the festival today and there was a lone man with a cross and a sign. My intial response was "Oh, lord" and I plucked up my courage to cross the street. When I crossed the street there were a couple of guys leaving the festival and we exchanged smiles and one of them shook their heads - resigned to the fact that this has become part of our environment (the sharks swim near the seals) I just smiled and said "They're everywhere" a bit annoyed that we couldn't be left in peace.

I thought about how much shame people had to overcome just to go to the festival. I thought about their courage.

I was wondering what was really in his heart. I almost walked up and asked him but thought about it when I was in the car going home.

(love)
If his heart was full of love and he really loved these people and was afraid that they were going to Hell. Then I have a lot of respect for that. That is Love in action (even if it is in my opinon misguided). It shows that he cares and he is really doing something about it.

(hate)
If his heart is full of hate and he just wants the people to feel bad ("Homosexuality is an abomination" as he said) and do as he says then he is nothing but an bully. It takes no courage to be a bully. It takes no courage to hate. If this the case then I have no respect for his perpetuation of hate.

I am talking about this calmly now but it really shook me up. Mostly because I feel like there should be a response but also it is hard to walk through something like that and not be effected by it. But how to respond in a way that would not escalate the hate? Just like you would challenge someone if they told a fag joke. It seemed like something that warranted a response.

I know there will be even more of these guys at the pride march in Sept.. I have an idea and if you have seen the Laramie Project, then you already know what it is. So when the time comes I may ask you to join me in an act of bravery and kindness.

Have a beautiful day. . .

-m

(side story)
I was at a peace march in Washington DC and had and amazing experience. As we were walking there was a "pro-war" audience and one of the hecklers started yelling stuff at us. The guy beside me started yelling back. They started heading towards each other. In a moment of clarity, as calmly as possible I put out my arms out and looked the guy beside me in the eyes with the heckler at my back and said "That is what he wants. He wants to make you angry. This is a peace march." and he looked at me nodded and turned and kept walking. It was a powerful moment.

Two of our biggest participants (and most contravercial writers) have left Tribe.net for the time being. Hopefully one or both will return before too long. I think both Molly and Mick are some of the most interesting people I've met here.

Never-the-less, the show must go on. So I'm requesting that some of you quieter folks step up and offer topics of interest to you so we can breath some energy back into this tribe. This is still a very new tribe and we have a long way to go before with have a more solid base of members.

for me it would be Canada. I like the cold, they don't have a problem with guns, they enjoy a diverse cultural setting, they seem incredibly civilised (especially when compared to their nearest neighbour) and they speak english. I like.

Does the current loving for all things gay....Elton (shit records and dressing as Marie Antoinette), Scissors (Jake looks good but when he opens his mouth he is the gay equivalent to the Little League Black Panthers>, Kylie <I reserve the right to be str8 if it doesnt hurt my record sales) I would include Ellen but I dont know what she is doing. Is being the most unfunny person on the planet somehow meant to be gay?

Will&Grace? A US revolution or just a sad sitcom showing str8,s what they wanted to see....i.e. cute intelligent rich white gay kids that never actually fucked?

Do gay pride marches, rainbow cafes and gay cities help people to see that who you love is not a choice or just perpetrate the myth that fags are weird.

Do we want equality or normal careers with inbuilt special rights to act to like act fags?

Keith Richards 'snorted dad's ashes, cocaine'

He now says he snorted his father's ashes mixed with cocaine, in comments published by British music magazine NME.

"The strangest thing I've tried to snort? My father. I snorted my father," Richards was quoted as saying.

"He was cremated and I couldn't resist grinding him up with a little bit of blow. My dad wouldn't have cared. ... It went down pretty well, and I'm still alive."

Richards' father, Bert, died in 2002 at the age of 84.

Richards, 63, one of rock's legendary wild men, told the magazine that his survival was the result of luck, and advised young musicians against trying to emulate him.

"I did it because that was the way I did it. Now people think it's a way of life," he was quoted as saying.

"I've no pretensions about immortality," he added. "I'm the same as everyone ... just kind of lucky.

"I was number one on the "Who's Likely To Die" list for 10 years. I mean, I was really disappointed when I fell off the list."

Doesn't just being gay make you "alternative?"

I'm not so sure. There's just so many variations in human sexulity. I see everyone as swimming around in one big melting pot of variables. I recently met a FTM named Jay. I recognized immediately that "he" was either a really cute, boyish lesbian, or a person who identified as a Female-to-Male. Jay turned out to be the latter. He was really cool and fun to hang with. I had no problem accepting and thinking of Jay as a male. It was a good experiance.

Are we restricted to gay topics or can we discuss anything?

How do you all feel about this?

I view this as a place to socialize and exchange ideas about anything you are willing to discuss. As I see more AGP tribes get born and split off to do thier own thing (yes another one was created recently), I don't really see a need for structure. I think each tribe is shaped more or less by the members who contribute to it. Thus it's mutually owned equally by each of us. What I particularily like about this one though, is that many of you are from other countries. I think that that is this tribes strength. International diversity.

I think those of us living in America have a great deal to learn from those of you that aren't. Conversely, I believe that in spite of how well informed most you non-American members are, there are still many other elements to the American experiance that the media can never explain.

I just want to open up the possibilities of ideas we discuss here and tap into the fact that we come from a variety of realities. I think that's very cool.

Any thoughts on this?

Proper insulting begins with education...

I first have to explain the term <public> in terms of schooling. In 19th century Britain, all education was as a result of private funding. Private schools were set up and funded by shipbuilders, teachers, Catholics, printers, Jews, you name it….for the benefit of their children and to further their particular doctrine. They were self funded by donation or by union or social funds. Those that could afford to look outwith the confines of such schools could pay to send their children to <public> schools i.e. schools open to all creeds and doctrines where education and not partisan interests came first...so long as you could afford it. Hence, today, we have the misnomer that <public> schools are strictly private, for the rich and the most elite in the land.

In those days, public schooling was only for the rich and only for boys. Schools were cold drafty places. Senior boys had their own rooms and were assigned a junior boy to run their errands including collecting firewood. A bundle of sticks for firewood is called a <faggot> so these junior boys, whose job it was to collect wood and light the fires of the senior boys rooms, became known as <faggots> or <fags>. It was also a verb e.g. <Jones fags for me>…meaning he is my servant. Teenage boys being teenage boys, in all boys boarding schools, (in those days the only girls those boys met were their sisters) had certain needs….. so junior boys assumed (or were forced to assume) <other> duties. And so <fag> became synonymous with boys who bent over to be sodomised.

So now you know….<fag> in gay terms does not mean homosexual in general but bottom in particular and its transition to an insulting term rests mainly with gay men who considered <bottom> to equal <inferior>.

Having fun with the term - "alternative"

Look it up. It has many different spins on its meaning. What's alternative to one person may not be the truth for another. It's become part of a catch-all phrase attempting to describe something unlike or different from another.

I find the title of this tribe, and the 2 others of a similar name, humorous. (Yes, yes, I know, I named it and thus am poking fun at myself.) But truthfully, the word has become so watered down, I'm not sure it has a clear meaning any more that all of us could ever agree on.

The more that main stream society has accepted us (gay folk), the less of a gay cliche we're becoming. I'm recognizing more and more of a uniqueness to gay individuals all over the world. We each bring to the table a variety of experiances, hopes, dreams, talents, and fresh perspectives more so than I've ever noticed before. We are as diverse as our heterosexual counterparts. So what's "alternative" any more? I'm really not sure...
