news from Beirut

topic posted Thu, July 20, 2006 - 7:10 AM by  beverley
I stayed on after the fesival, which delivered beautifully, when I'm finished the piece Im writing about it, I will post it, but right now still in Lebanon, watching the war with horror for the destruction it is causing.

The good news is Amani, her team and I are all safe. I will leave in the next few weeks as planned and keep you updated. Meantime, I dance (and eat) while Beirut’s Burning.

What else to do against a marauding army? Amani has been watching my back and we are all safe. Its so surreal being marooned in paradise. I love Beirut so much and couldn’t imagine being anywhere else but Lebanon right now.

The beach chalet I call home is packed with Arabic families and I can hear the planes flying overhead. North of Beirut is safe, and I have been with Amani in the last few days, shopping for supplies, watching the news and getting fat. I came in wheat-free (borderline) vegan, and have been broken by the avocado ice-cream and never did I imagine it would sometimes be the first thing on my mind waking up!

The beautiful tastes of the Lebanese kitchen keeps me nourished. Of course the restaurants carry all lines of mezze making this country Mecca for Vegetarians, but the dishes I tasted by Amani’s hand and those of her mother confirmed that good looks and cooking ability run in the family. Amani is vegetarian too, so lucky for me I got to taste the most unbelievable combinations of traditional Lebanese food to suit my veggie diet.

There are a couple of recipes I’m keen to nick with courgette. The one is with a garlic sauce, the other is stuffed with rice. Beans are celebrated in Lebanon almost as much as Amani herself and there are so many different kinds, all with their own traditional recipes. I have attempted a few goes at the lentil dishes she showed me, and am desperately trying to not eat melt-in-the-mouth Halwa, but concede to a weakness for this little tub of carob syrup hiding in a cupboard at her mother’s house (I know exactly where, and they don’t seem to mind when I suddenly disappear and head for the syrup, eaten with tahini which gets to the mouth on a scoop of Arabic flat bread.) I have to stop eating so much good food or I’ll never get myself back into an Oriental dance costume!

Since a fat bruise happened on my left foot, Ive had to walk around with no shoes for a few days which Amani finds quite hysterical because we’ve been in the supermarkets, banks and all over, me barefoot, and in a country prizing good shoes, guess what, nobody noticed. I say “If you swing yer bum good and proper, no-one’s gonna be looking at yer feet.”

We are safe, waiting for this war to end soon.

Please send your prayers to the Middle East,
With Love from Lebanon,
Beverley

Thank you, Beverly for the news. It's reassuring to hear of some normalcy in the midst of the chaos. I am crushed by the news of this invasion. I have been so hopeful about visiting the beautiful country of Lebanon. When my mother was alive, we hoped to visit her homeland & see our family together, but it wasn't safe. To think of this happening all over again after all the progress is devastating. My heart goes out to all of the displaced & disrupted lives. Please write again when you can. Thank you for keeping us posted.

OH, thank GOD you all are alright. Please keep us posted. Do you think that you will have to leave the country soon, and Amani and her family, too? Or will you just wait it out?

I've been worried sick about Amani, thanks for letting us know she's alright :)

Feel free to post any stories here about what's going on.

I know I'm not alone when I say that if you guys can get out, you have a home with me! There are people all over the world who love you, Amani; are truly are an angel, and so incredibly strong and brave to do what you do. You have many homes away from your homeland; you are not alone!!!!

I am a vegetarian, too and last night I ate stuffed grape leaves and Hummus and worried about you. I've told my mother about you and she is worried, too. Please be careful and we hope to meet you and your dancers one day. Love, Aziza

Today I heard on CNN (it's the only channel I watch for this stuff, I simply don't have the time to surf other networks) that the TV stations and phone company have been bombed out in the north of Beirut. This means that neither Amani nor Beverley can get online to give us updates. I'm just worried sick...I'm trying to see the Big Picture, but it's so hard knowing that you all are there scared to death, and not able to even hear what's going on out there. I'm assuming that you have a radio; perhaps you can hear the stations in Syria and know what's going on.

I hope that Amani has the sense to leave the country with Beverly and go to London if it is possible. I hope that she doesn't wait it out just to stick with her beloved country. We need you, sweetie!!!! We are all your family out here, the world is your country, hon.

I'm just waiting to hear what's going on....praying for your safety!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just got another email from Amani, and she has very limited access to the internet now, since the Israelis have been bombing the Christian neighborhoods.

At least I know she is safe for now.

Pray that she can leave the country soon!!!!!!!!!!

"I'm assuming that you have a radio; perhaps you can hear the stations in Syria and know what's going on. "

I'm reading a few blogs from the area, such as the ones from these two artists:

              cedarseed.livejournal.com/
              mazenkerblog.blogspot.com/

From their commentary, I think it's more a "rolling blackout/access" issue than a total wipeout of connections, as your later post about her getting an email out points to.

Frankly, I'd avoid the TV altogether, and try to find more "on the street" blogs and news sources like the one above. So long as the more-or-less ordinary people can get the word out, we here in out comfy chairs in the West can know more about how this is affecting Real People....

Hope to get the Amani bit on my blog tonight or tomorrow early AM; that's actually why I stopped by, to get a quote. :)

I heard from Amani today, and Beverly has left. Amani won't leave, because she doesn't want to leave her parents behind.

She said nowhere is safe; that if they don't succeed in the south, they will come north.

She's forwarded several things onto me; I will look them over, and then post the appropriate ones here.

Picked this up via the Mideast Youth blog ( www.mideastyouth.com/ ) :

    "Staying On
    Why I'm not evacuating Beirut.
    By Faerlie Wilson

[...]over the last few days, while bombs and artillery pummeled the southern part of the city, I made the decision not to leave Lebanon. Explosions rock my building even as I write this, but I'm staying put.

I'm not crazy, and I harbor no death wish. This is simply the rational decision of someone who has built a life in Lebanon, who believes in this place and its ability to bounce back. I choose to bet on Beirut. "

Thanks for the update. Any & all news is appreciated. Please watch Link TV for real news & broadcasts direct from the middle east. The satellite networks carry it here in the US, if your cable provider doesn't yet carry it, please request that they do. We can't really complain anymore about how news in the US is biased & incomplete. If you are still complaining about this, then you are simply watching the wrong channel.

Amani said in an email yesterday that she is leaving Beirut and going to her parents up north, and they have no internet. Godspeed, Amani, and I am praying for you!

BTW, if you didn't know, Ali is Amani's manager, and it is his house that was destroyed. He has children, too. God Bless you, Ali, and your family, too. I am so sorry for your lose. You are in our thoughts and prayers :)

Amani is traveling north to her parents house? Now I am really worried as people traveling the roads often are targets & terrible things have been happening. They are told to evacuate & when they do, they get shot at! PLEASE let us know when you hear she has reached her destination.. I hope she can make contact somehow. How awful about Ali's home. How awful that so much has been destroyed. Haram.

I just got this from Amani this morning:

"Aytaroun is a small Lebanese village across the border
a week ago they made carnages towards families and civilains : children, mothers fathers and old people
and yesterday night they destroyed 100 houses completely

A Red cross Ambulance was hited and devided to 2 parts! they are hitting civilians
Remeich is a village too, lot of civilians from another village " Ain Ible " who run out to hide from the Israely aireplanes bombs in "Rmeich" since the first day of the envasion, 12/07/06.
Both villages civilains are around 15.000 person ( Christians and Muslims) they have ben surrounded since the first day , no food, no medicin no electricity no water nothing lot of injuries and they ahve been asking for help at least for the small babies and old and sick people but the israely army didn't let any to send any help
yesterday the lebanese made a convoy holding the white falgs went to give some help, they were hited by the israely bombs.

they hit the bridges and roads, than ask people to leave the village cause they want to destroy it all and when the civilains are out some running some with their cars ( if the cars still existe) so they hit them
i am just giving you some ideas of what is happening in south Lebanon"

        God Bless Lebanon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw a photo of an ambulance that was hit directly in the center of the red cross on it's roof, as if the cross was a target. This could not have been an accident. A supply vehicle carrying releif supplies & medicine was bombed, the driver killed; then another was sent the following day & the same thing happened again! Both of those vehicle's missions were well established ahead of time. The Israeli forces are behaving badly, abusing their abilities in the worst ways. Are these examples not in direct violation of international wartime laws?

Yes, they are in violation. It's just a matter of time before the world wakes up to Israel's abominations.

Israel's violence is like a pit bull. Lebanon's violence is like a feral dog, thrown in the backyard with no food and no water. And they wonder why they act so crazy?? Because they have been driven mad. Israel is not a mad dog, but a trained dog who knows better, but kills anyway for the sheer joy of it. Disgusting. I can't even find the words.

                  Hi to you all,

I have been very ill, I am sorry I did not write. I wanted to stay in Lebanon in absolute support of a country I believe to have the love and spirit unmatched in the world. When the communications went down, I saw them. First I heard the planes and felt their breath. Then the bombs shook, two dropped in 2 seconds. I saw the mushroom cloud, but ran first to the chalet next door to mine where I had befriended a gorgeous Lebanese family who let me watch English TV on their set. The mother was hysterical, the father went running out to size the damage, and me, I was holding on to the two children Leticia 5 and Tracy 3, wiping way their tears and holding them to my chest, when they settled, then I went to hold their mother, who was shaking so much she couldn't pick them up.

A few hours later, the South African embassy called me. I had been in touch with them due to pressure from my Amani, Ali, my mother and friends and I told the rep that he should call me when its the last boat, to let everyone who was more vulnerable out first. Well, it was the last boat, and I had a few hours. I jogged the 10km to Jounieh to meet Ali and say goodbye. I sailed on a French ship, bombs were dropping on Beirut as we pulled out of the harbour.

I have been heartbroken for two weeks. In Cyprus, I couldn't leave my apartment. I decided to come to Egypt to seek solace. Its not good being on the other side, it hurts. Thank God good people caught me in Cairo. I stayed with Liza Laziza for a while, and got busy rescuing 3 week old kittens. By some miracle of God one survived despite screaming odds. I take this as a good sign. A few days ago I set off toAswan, spent a few days on a falooka boat and now have arrived in Luxor, thank God.

I pray for Lebanon every day. I am sure this will end soon,

I miss Amani very much, and Ali your voice on the phone was not you the last time we spoke, I will come and give you a hug very soon XXX

Thank you to all the dancers who love Lebanon, your voices are like bright lights. It will be OK. I believe it.

                  Love Beverley

I haven't heard from Amani; the internet must be down, she usually responds to my emails, even if only briefly. We are praying everyday for this madness to end.

the roads are too dangerous for Amani to drive back to her flat for internet and there is no more gas.

Amani is safe at her parents house, there is no internet there, but she will be OK don't worry it is just so hard with the situation in Lebanon.

I had hoped we would meet last June at the festival, honey, but I am sure we will meet someday soon, God bless you sweetness XBeverley

Poland is Tarab Oriental festival. Our show is 6 days back to back then workshops and more touring. www.ishtar.moonfruit.com

I'm taking it real easy now... indoors in the day and I take a walk after sunset to haggle with the shops in the souk. I've been on quite a missionthis last week 'cos Im setting up my new business Oriental Temple Tours and laying groundwork to bring dancers here in June next year. I should go to Lebanon after that with whoever will come with me. A few have said they are keen, I will support Lebanon as much as possible. I've been writing articles and working with Sarah from UK to put together features in womens magazines to share what I have seen.

So I may well see you in Egypt next year, X
