Instructional Video by Amar???

This tribe has been extremely quiet, but I have a question. Does anyone have any idea if Amar has any plans for an instructional video? I know she and Kaeshi have the Bellyqueens video, which I own, but I would like to see an instructional video by Amar on some of her techniques. I especially am interested in her hip movements. Some of her hip movements are so subtle that it seems like if you blink you'll miss it and that makes it extremely hard to duplicate.
Of all of the Bellydance Superstars I enjoy watching her dance the most and it seem that they all have instructional videos that are not geared towards clubbers. I would like to see one geared towards the 'dancers.' Towards teaching technique. Anyone else agree?

I just found out that there will be an Amar Gamal workshop this upcoming Saturday in Bridgewater, MA. I don't have any details at all, but apparently it was just announced. I can't find anything on it online yet, but I'm hoping someone will announce it soon.

But while I was on the Bellyqueen workshop, I saw this weekend intensive. I wish I lived in NYC. This looks like so much fun.

Amar Gamal one of my fave belly dancers. So I was bummed not to see her at Rakkasah Spring nor Rakkasah East dancing with Belly Queens not did I see her at the Belly Dance Super Star performance in Glenside, PA. I would have liked to see such an amazing dancer perform live. I am hoping she will grace us this coming Rakkasah Spring 2008.

Hey all!

How did you first discover or hear about Amar Gamal and how did it affect how you viewed your own dancing or perception of bellydancers?

I had first hear about Amar on a Yahoo group for bellydancers of color when someone mentioned the group Bellyqueen and how it featured two dancers of African and Asian descent. I had only been able to see clips of Amar's performance via her website, so it wasn't until I looked at the BDSS dvd (the first one) that I got a true idea of just how amazing she was. What stuck out for me about her dancing was not only how fast and sharp her shimmies and isolations were, but some of her movements had a distintly African feel in their power and execution.

I had never seen a bellydancer who moved like this and it was a wonderful source of inspiration for me to not be afraid to integrate more Afro movements into my bellydancing routines.......and to practice my choo choo shimmy more ;-)

Amar's arms and neck are wonderfully long. What helps you to attain such freedom and grace in the movement of the arms and around the shoulders? Amar can pull her shoulders very far down and back, that looks very graceful- is it ballett training? Anyone know something? Special exercises?

Amar's technique, her story, her name?

Hi, I'm from Hamburg in Germany, I took up bellydancing last november, having danced flamenco for a long time, also salsa. I saw the BDSS-DVD and after watching it several times, Amar was definitely my favourite (but I also liked Tamalyn Dallal, funny, then I found out she was among Amar's teachers). I wonder what does the trick - well she has those long arms and legs and the narrow flexible torso, the perfectly beautifully shaped belly. It has been talked about her strong and neat shimmies which I found also stunning. I read she had lessons in ballett and modern dance also - I admire the beauty of the shoulder-neck-part in her dance, she has a wide range for movement (I hope you can understand my English). But I think there's a great deal of natural elegance in her dance which can't be learnt.

Well her style is what I'd like to work for, but only for me she won't come here. Since some of you are her students, could you give me hints what is important for her style, what I should pay attention to. Is it necessary to do ballett-training (I had a bit of it but that was some years ago)?

Another thing I'm interested in is her story. When I was in Cuba I found a lot of Cubans had islamic names, like Emir, Ibrahim and so on. I wonder whether Amar Gamal would be an artist's name or if her parents or forefathers came from an arabic country? Because when I saw her facial features I thought she looked very much like an afghan or maybe indian beauty and was very much surprised to hear she came from La Habana. But maybe this is due to special eye-makeup. Well I found that interesting. One of you has mentioned a sort of african dynamism in her dance and I had thought the same thing a bit, she reminded me also with her flexibility and body-shape of an afro-brasilian girl I saw dancing lately.

I will be very happy to learn more about her! She is absolutely adorable!

Bellyqueen Auditions April 1st

Dear Dancers,

It's the first time in the 8 year history of Bellyqueen that we have
had auditions so this is an experiment to see what happens. We were a
trio for 3.5 years, then a duet for another 3 years, now we are up to 6!
Up until now, we have deliberately kept it small because there hasn't been many
opportunities for large troupes to get booked, plus we found that it
was easier to synchronise styles and rehearsal schedules with a
smaller group than a larger one, but now we are ready for something
new so we are trying this out to see how it goes.

Saturday April 1st: Auditions for Bellyqueen Company, New York NY
Seeking: Female Dancers-18 plus
5"2 to 5"9. Any ethnicity. Must have experience in bellydance.
Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Yoga, Afro-Carribean, Flamenco, Indian, Chinese,
Gypsy and Popping a plus.
Dancers must attend at least one NYC class a week taught by Kaeshi
(for synchronicity of style), plus weekly rehearsals on Wed 3-6pm and
Sun 12-3pm in mid town.

Auditions will be held Sat April 1st, 12-3pm at Fazils - Time Circle
Studios, 743 8th Ave, bet 46th and 47th St, NYC.
Bring pix and resume and 1 written page explaining your goals as a
dancer and why you want to join Bellyqueen.
Please prepare a 3 min solo showing off your specialties.
(Does not have to be bellydance.)
Rehearsals are not paid. There will be compensation for commercial

Beautiful Dancers,
Shimmy-a-thon 2006 planning is underway- mark your calendars for Sept 23rd. Last year's event raised over $16K for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and we are hoping to raise $20k this year.

For those of you who participated, donated or came to the event last year, thank you for your support and we hope we can count on you again this year! We have some exciting things planned for this year's event; so keep an eye out to www.shimmyathon.com for updates and information when it becomes available. Currently information about last year's event is out there; so those of you who missed it can get an idea of what we are about.

If you would like to help out in some way, please feel free to contact us! We love hearing from you and everyone's efforts are greatly appreciated. If you have a special skill or item/product/service you would like to donate as a prize or incentive, know someone who can help us or just have some extra time to donate, please let us know. Our show should fill up very quickly this year, so please let me know if you are interested in performing.

Amar Gamal teaches a workshop in NYC Thurs Jan 12th 8-10pm

Dear Bellyqueen friends,

I am very happy to announce that next Thursday Amar Gamal is going to make a rare appearance in NYC and will teach a 2 hour workshop.

When: Thursday Jan 12th 8-10pm
Where: 440 Studios, 440 Lafayette bet East 4th and Astor Place, Studio 4F

Cost: $30 adv $35 at the door.
(For class card holders, the workshop is worth 2 classes. You will be reimbursed $1)

Workshop Description: Amar will teach step combinations of her Egyptian fusion style that include flavors of latin, jazz, and ballet. She will also share her secrets behind her powerful shimmies. She will teach you how to polish, control, and layer shimmies & vibrations plus other hip techniques essential to building a strong bellydancer. All levels welcome.

is it powered from her legs? her gluts, like Suhaila??? combo of both????
