What do you folks think of this telescope?

Hi,

I'm new here.

I know nothing about buying telescopes, but since my daughter and I love to look at the night sky (and love all of those Science Channel shows), I thought I would buy her a telescope for her birthday.

We live in Phoenix, AZ so we have plenty of clear nights (Yay!).

I was just wondering if anyone might care to comment about this particular one I'm thinking about buying:

store.discovery.com/detail.php

What I like about it is that you can enter your zip code and it can locate celestial objects for you (a plus, considering I know nothing about reading star maps).

My goal is to buy a telescope that will make it easy for us to search for and FIND things we want to look at!

All comments will be very much appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

I have not used this particular scope, I have a much larger Meade scope that I really enjoy. Just taking a quick look at the specs, this seems like it would be a good scope to start with to insure that you enjoy astronomy. I will give you a warning that this can become addictive, and you may soon be looking for a larger scope. If you live in Phoenix, the biggest concern I would have is light pollution, but if you head out into the desert you should be able to get great viewing nights.

Personally, I like Meade scopes, and I am glad you are looking at this one rather than a cheap department store scope as they can be a major disappointment. I have a small checklist that I suggest people consider when buying a scope.

    1. Does it have "GoTo" and tracking? if not you better really know the sky if you are going to enjoy it.

    2. What is the aperture? Bigger is better within limits, see number 3.

    3. What is the weight? Something too heavy will probably not be used often, and heavy is very dependent on the individual.

    4. What is the cost? I mention this as scopes can get very expensive, but you do get what you pay for. The better the scope, the more you will enjoy it.
