What is to be lost by failure/refusal to be nationalistic? What are they so afraid of if, say, I don't fly my flag in the days following an attack on the land that happens to fall within the political boundaries that also bound the place where I was born? How do the terrorists win?
It seems to me that it would be more important for me to fly my nation's flag if I were on "foreign" soil than here, in a-hundred-miles-from-any-border central Ohio...
Am I missing something?
I dunno. In England they fly the flag over Buckingham Palace only when the Queen is present. Is it important that the hoi polloi fly flags then as well? How many people must display a symbol before it has meaning?

"How many people must display a symbol before it has meaning?"
Sun, September 23, 2007 - 6:07 AMAnd how many times must we symbolically all fly our flags (on those government-designated days) before it completely loses its meaning?
You know, flying another country's flag is treason, or something like that. If you want to fly -- say -- the Italian flag in your yard (as many in our neighborhood love to do, since it's their heritage) you must also fly the US flag a bit higher. Most people ignore this. And yet, we haven't been overtaken by Italians (yet).
At our house, we fly the Pennsylvania flag unless it's basketball season, and then we fly the Kansas Jayhawk flag, unless they suck, and then we fly the West Ham United (english football) flag because basketball & english football seasons overlap. :D West Ham United almost always sucks, but that's part of their charm. Here's their song:
The West Ham United anthem - 'I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles'
I'm dreaming dreams
I'm scheming schemes
I'm building castles high
They're born anew
Their days are few
Just like a sweet butterfly
And as the daylight is dawning
They come again in the morning
I'm forever blowing bubbles
Pretty bubbles in the air
They fly so high
Nearly reach the sky
Then like my dreams they fade and die
Fortune's always hiding
I've looked everywhere
I'm forever blowing bubbles
Pretty bubbles in the air.
When shadows creep
When I'm asleep
To lands of hope I stray
Then at daybreak
When I awake
My bluebird flutters away
Happiness you seem so near me
Happiness come forth and cheers me
I'm forever blowing bubbles
Pretty bubbles in the air
They fly so high
Nearly reach the sky
Then like my dreams they fade and die
Fortune's always hiding
I've looked everywhere
I'm forever blowing bubbles
Pretty bubbles in the air

but, I digress... -

Sun, September 23, 2007 - 10:55 AMI've been noticing that a lot of questions these days are being framed in the way Dylan framed them in "Blowin' in the Wind"... -

Mon, September 24, 2007 - 10:26 AMHmmm.....
Is it the same thing to be lost if all christians reject the church, and all witches reject wicca?
Namely... control?
I'd conject that it is self directed behaviour they fear. All of them......

Mon, September 24, 2007 - 12:09 PM...which brings us back around to the fact that the word "heretic" comes from the Greek word meaing "to take" as in "to take one's pick; choose."
