Proposals put forth by the European Commission (here: tinyurl.com/mhrsp )
Call for regulation of passports and creation of a centralized fingerprint / biometric database replete with other information such as names, biometric, and historical information on all persons using EU transit systems beginning with those people crossing borders.

The proposals do not address privacy concerns. Peter Hustinx Profile (here: tinyurl.com/2scmm9 ) who is the head of the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) (here: tinyurl.com/36wlfz ) has announced that the Commission's plans do not adequately address the inherent imperfections of biometric systems, especially the specific concerns regarding children and the elderly. In November 2007, EU Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security Franco Frattini (here: tinyurl.com/3345gw ) presented a counter terrorism proposal (here: tinyurl.com/2sreow ). This proposal includes the implementation of an Pan-EU system of biometric name and other information to be exchanged across the whole of the EU as to any one using the transit systems.

Frattini said in September 2007 that the European Commission was moving forward with plans to establish an EU-wide airline passenger data recording system despite privacy concerns. Also in March 2007, the Commission announced plans to develop a common fingerprint database which include sall data collected from criminals within member states.
