Wednesday the Iowa Legislature (here: tinyurl.com/ysv9a5 ) passes a Bill by a margin of 84-16. The Bill, HF 2686 (here: tinyurl.com/4s8ab3 ), will impose a burden on all Iowa Employers to heck and validate all employee’s citizen or immigration status within 10 days of their hire date by checking driver’s licenses or other state issued ID. Employers would have to inform an Iowa state office of any discovered illegal aliens and the Iowa state agency would have to inform the ICE.


The employers will execute an affidavit swearing to the fact of the check and results. This measure invokes criminal sanctions as to employers who seek to avoid the law or falsify results. The designation “independent contractors” will not be a dodge available to employers.

If the Iowa Senate passes the Bill it will go to the Governor for signing.
