Holland--Industrious but Beautiful

topic posted Tue, September 11, 2007 - 10:31 AM by  Abe
Today I just laxadaisically looked up Holland in Wikipedia...and found out that Holland proper is only one of many regions in The Netherlands.
I've always thought the Netherlands was amazing. They are one of the most populated countries on Earth but still produce more than enough food to feed itself and export to other countries. It's such irony that a little land built under the sea could have so much industrial power and GDP. Of course the wealth of Indonesia and other lands poured into it for more than 3 centuries...
Nonetheless such a pretty place.

Name some of your dutch companies you can think of: KLM, De Beers, Heineken etc...

    Isn't de Beers South African?
Hate that company, anyway... Though I admit they cleaned up their act since the 90's and are no longer supporting blood diamonds; at least not openl
The Netherlands is one of my favorite destinations, and I don't even smoke pot... For me, one nice example is the police: On every police car, it says "POLITE".
    Fits!

Oh you are right! Why did I think De Beers was Dutch? Probably because of the name it sounds Dutch, and the Dutch did have close ties with South Africa in it's early history. Such as the Orange free state.
I 'll say Dutch Shell Oil instead.
If it isn't Blood Diamonds, it's Blood Cocoa pods or Nigerian Oil whatever commodity is in high demand in the rest of the world.
I still believe what the cult leader said about Africa, he dubbed it "The Black Hole" and strongly discouraged members from taking hold there.
Well now the Chinese are invading that continent in large numbers and investing, hopefully it will work out for the best for all Africans, and they won't have too many civil war.
BTW De Beers also has monopolized the Diamond industry--This I know well--Maybe the Canuks will be the one's to break all of us free from it from their explorations in the Yukon.
I credit Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe and Hollywood in making Diamonds the most lusted and coveted commodity for the world's greatest purchasers---Women.
