Re: 3rd Coast '08 Videos
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 12:34 PMIt's one of the best routines I've seen on here and I'm a nerd - I spend all my free time either dancing or watching other people dancing on youtube LOL. I hope you don't mind that I joined your tribe. Tribal belly dance hasn't taken off in the UK yet so most of us that want to try something different are turning to the internet to pick up tips lol. -

Re: 3rd Coast '08 Videos
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 12:55 PMWow, what a compliment. Thank you! I'm a youtube junky too. I can waste hours looking at dance videos when I should be working.
And we don't mind you joining our tribe at all, the more the merrier. Welcome! -

Re: 3rd Coast '08 Videos
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 1:23 PMlol I swear youtube is almost as dangerous as ebay....whole hours can get swallowed up without you realising!!
Seriously, you guys are good - the choreography is very special. It's got all the funk of the other tribal groups (like unmata etc) but there's something very feminine and sexy about it. That to me is the whole point - I mean it's great to watch when people can shimmy away like demons on speed and all but sometimes I feel they've lost the roots somewhere along the way.
I just wish we had things like this over here. Our Haflas tend to be very small and amateur and as far as I'm aware there's only one teacher of Tribal bellydance in Wales (where I live) and she's so far away I can only go once a month to her special workshops :( We don't have gatherings like tribal fest or belly jam or anything like that. I wish I could win the lottery LOL I'd come live in the States for a year or two and learn as much as I can - make it big here. Start up an annual festival. It's very difficult to find outfits too - I've ended up making mine for my first performance next month because I couldn't bear to go on stage in see-through trousers!!!!! It's sad because bellydance is actually really popular here. I live in the sticks and there are 3 weekly classes in my local town alone! It's just that noone really seems to want to take the leap away from the cabaret and traditional styles to go for something a bit different. I'm trying mind LOL - I recently wrote a dance for Tainted Love by softcell from moves I found on youtube although it's a bit basic. I've only been learning for a few months so I'm not very good yet. I have to leave out all the complicated stuff!!!!! -

Re: 3rd Coast '08 Videos
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 1:59 PMI pretty much stopped describing our less traditional stuff as tribal. That particular piece has elements of bellydance (both cabaret and tribal), jazz, ballet, and hip hop. So I just call it fusion bellydance. We started out as strictly cabaret dancers and that's what I teach on a weekly basis so it just kind of seeps in without me even realizing it. Plus we are so lucky to live in an area where we're exposed to so much through workshops and classes. I can't imagine how hard it would be to live in a place where you don't have access to all that. You're doing the only thing you can do right now. Thank god for the internet! I would say just keep doing what you're doing watching videos online, buy instructional DVDs, and take classes and perform whenever you get a chance. And hopefully one day we can come and teach a workshop. I've never been to the UK....sounds fun! -

Re: 3rd Coast '08 Videos
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 2:48 PMMmmm I always get the styles confused - there are so many different styles it's hard to know what's what. Fusion is good :) There's one I've seen somewhere on youtube that mixes ballet and bellydance which is pretty cool but I'm not that skinny or flexible lol. The hardest thing about living without all the workshops and classes is that there's nowhere to measure how much you're improving. Like, I feel the moves are coming easier but I still have no idea if I'm any good at them because we tend to just learn routines rather than technique and I haven't got a full-length mirror at home lol. And the bits and bobs I've caught on youtube are totally hit and miss - there are some really good classes and some really terrible ones!!
It would be awesome if you guys could come to the UK. Sadie was here last weekend but I was working so I couldn't go and see her :(
