Monday and Tuesday: Master Classes. 3 hours of class each day (4:30-7:30)

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:

THE ART OF MAKING IT WEIRD (slow, lovely, and strange)

we are going to ride the edge between exquisite and strange in this slow movement workshop. All that ooey gooey stuff that is so fun and delicious to watch and do will be focused on, using elements from the head down through to the fingertips. We will be focusing on super slow isolations, extreme undulations, and upper body technique. Hand work, elbow work, wrist work, posture, oblique strengthening (to get that horozontal pull that makes mayas and hip slides so exquiste and strange) , belly rolls with emphasis on stomach musculature. And of course the elusive flutter!

DANCING WITH INTENTION

Tools for dancers ready to figure out how they want to perform and what they want to convey. We’ll work on focus, conveying emotion, expression, all while actually dancing. Think ‘Bellydance Theatrics 101.’ Intermediate level - some belly dance experience highly recommended.

FINGER CYMBAL DRILLING AND SHORT CHOREOGRAPHY

For dancers wishing to enhance their finger cymbal skills. We will use drills that will help you dance with more confidence as you become proficient in playing various zill patterns.
Then a zoe style short choreography to bring it all together!
no prior zill experience reqiured some bellydance experience required

UNLEASHING THE INNER SPAZ!!!!!

Fancy kicks, tight spins and those elusive concepts to take pops and locks to the next level by mixing the liquid smoothness of a snake with hits and stops that look almost inhuman. All in easily digestable Combination form. This workshop will focus on ways to perform with passionate expression while maintaining control and grace. These concepts will be fully broken down using short combinations as examples so the student is able to get a real understanding of the mechanisms behind them. Prepare to wrap your mind around weird movement that doesn't fit with convention!

LAYERING WITH SHIMMIES--ZOE STYLE!

Zoe pulls all the shimmies from her book for this one. Shimmies powered by the glutes, oblique shimmies, and chooches, 3/4 shimmies....but then adds chest slides, hits, pops, figure 8's, and bellyrolls. Your legs and your brain are gonna get a serious workout! intermediate to advanced

SHARP AND SLINKY CHOREOGRAPHY

Taking concepts from both classes, we will be interconnecting lightening quick popping moves with molasses slow slinky moves to create a dynamic choreography that will charm them all.

Ananda performing with Mezmer Society on Sept 6th at World Grotto!!!

If you've ever seen Onca and/or Mezmer Society perform before, you know
why we are SO excited to be a part of this show!!!!

I have never seen anyone entice and command an audience like Onca!!!
She dances, she swords, she sings!! I swoon!... and the smoky smooth,
cabaret voice of the accordian weilding August would make you swear you
were in some out of the way bar on a Balkan road.

Really, if you haven't seen the Mezmer Society perform, you need to be
there. If you have, you know you have to be there!!!

Probably starts around 9ish, but I'm not quite sure!!

Saturday 12-4:30 (includes a 30 minute break): DANCE AND MUSIC THEOLOGY: This will bridge between music, interpretation, staging, costuming and props as integrated to give a particular message. We will incorporate Jungian depth psychology as it pertains to archetypes and a lot of Martha Graham ideology.

Sunday 12-4:30 (includes a 30 minute break): We get down to business with dance practice, drills and choreography with props and how to dance WITH your prop as a partner.

For both days of classes (that's 8 hours of classes!) is $120
One day (one class) is $75

Saturday night there will be an all-star show featuring Moria, Gypsy Hands, Bodhicitta (of Nashville) and more to be announced. Location TBA.

I miss my G-burg gals, and Body Works!!
The Gatlinburg intensive will run for 4 weeks, 2 hours per Saturday.
This class will begin with an extensive Yoga and Pilates warm up, and each class will work a different section of the body, paying close attention to muscle articulation and isolation of that area. We will then walk through several combinations specific to the area we have been working with.
Preregistration is a MUST, the entire 4 weeks is only $100!! That's 8 hours of instruction!!! This series will end with a hafla of music and dance!!!

Workshop Details

Hey all!

I'm excited to come teach bellydance/hip hop fusion on the 28th of June! I wanted to share my plans for the workshop so people knew what to expect.

Please wear supportive footwear of some kind. The best shoe is a split sole jazz sneaker but you can also wear regular sport sneakers (like Pumas etc) or cross-trainers.

Here is what I'm planning on:
1. What is hip hop and how can I fuse it effectively with bellydance? What is appropriate music, venues etc?
2. Warm Up
3. Hip hop moves and techniques
4. Fusion Combinations
5. Review of Music
6. Choreography from the routine I did at Bellydancer of the Universe
7. Drilling the Choreo

I'm excited!

Oh my! whadda weekend!!

Thanks to everyone that came out one time or another this past weekend!

The shows were amazing!! It was such a blast dancing with my partner and my Asheville co-horts!! Wine/coffee on the porch is beginning to become a tradition!

The hoop shops were so very fun! Jewels demystefied many things for me. Mazi was even hooping after a short time, and her sustained spins!! So beautiful!

Extra special thanks go out to Jewels and Scott, who really added so much to the shows!! I hope they can play with us very soon.

Lastly, thanks to all the gals who came out to the hoop shop! I hope you had fun!

I also need your choreographer's credits, and names of dancers, so I may note everything appropriately in the program. Please make sure dancer's names are spelled correctly, it's the worst to see your name misspelled in a program! Anything submitted 2 weeks or less before the show won't be in the program. So if you know you are registering, and are performing in the show, but have to wait until the last minute to register, please message me with your details so I can include you! Heyup! It's almost time!

A Little Hip Hop Workshop with Lisa Zahiya

Tribal Basics and Technique will remain on Monday Evenings at 7:45

Tribal Movement and Style, which is currently on Saturdays at 10:00, will move to
Thursday evenings at 7:45.

Tribal Basics and Technique covers a strength and tone intensive (utilizing yoga and pilates methods) for belly dance muscles and technique. Followed by Technique isolations and drills, and drilling basic belly dance movements to create muscle memory.

Tribal Movement and Style will begin a short strengthening series, then will move into basic movements that can be put together to create combinations. We will explore traveling movements, tribal specific stylizations and specialty topics such as choreo creativity, presence on the stage, costuming, and use of props. Combinations can be utilized in a group improv setting.

Sept. 14-16, Jaia will mecca over to Asheville to teach and perform at TribOriginal, A Culture Camp sponsored by the one and only Onca.

Sept. 22nd, join us in our new space over at Yoga Haven to celebrate autumn Equinox with a hafla of live music, dance, and middle eastern themed snacks.

October 4th, Ananda will once again take the stage with HuDost, from New York and Montreal.

October 12th-14th, Jaia will be heading over to the Shakori Grassroots Festival to perform with HuDost, and to teach belly dance and yoga classes.

A funky and very old, now tea bar in Knoxville. With vintage motorcycles parked everywhere, an eclectic mix of stuff seen hanging on the wall, and a giant round table in the center, this place provided the perfect backdrop for a bellydance show.

My dear friend Soubhi came in from Asheville to teach a worksop to us dancers. She was great! Her lovely troupe came in for the festivities (I so enjoyed seeing Selena again, and meeting Nor (those shimmies!)) Tribalesque danced beautifully! The perfect ending to a very REAL and relaxed but professional show (complete with audio difficulties, smoothie sounds and children dancing about!)

A huge thanks to all the dancers, especially Sabylla, to whom I owe a solo spot (not to mention an endless amount of thanks). To Gypsy Dreams, I LOVE the new costumes and Damaru, wow, an amazing first performance!

Info for Baraka Mundi show

Join the Bandit Queens of Bmundi in our annual visit to Knoxville's Old City for the Blue Cats Casbah Experience. In addition to an evening of clubdancing to the sounds of DJ Slink, Bmundi will do several improv sets on the stage with swords and more. There will also be a henna artist onsite, spreading that gypsy beauty, and maybe even some red hot fire to spice up the spring evening!

(To my knowledge, there is no cover) We will be there all night long, with lots of downtime to meet and greet with other local dancers - come and hang out!

Wow!....er...ow!

Jaia,

I just want to tell you what a tremendously fabulous day yesterday was. I had such a great time and you deserve some well earned applause and appreciation for all the work you put into getting Moria here, the merchandise here, the workshop running smooth, the show (oh wow! the show) and just everything that made yesterday just an absolutely great day.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm definitely feeling the workout Moria gave us in the workshop yesterday. (That's the ow in WOW!) I'm smiling through it though--well except when I'm transferring laundry from the washer to the dryer. (that twinges at bit)

All the dancers in the show did such a wonderful job. I hope we all get the chance to do it again real soon.

Getting to see Baraka Mundi was a treat. And Moria is indeed mezmerizing. Moria-mezing!!!

12:00-5:00, daycare available.
