my F.O.B Japanese friend preferred Yamato Ya over everything else.

I've never had bad food there, either.

      FOB?

I like Yamato-Ya too. I used to go there all the time before I did sushi. But I think they have new owners since then...?

I like Sushi-Ya; I get the combo bento boxes and they're good, with the tempura and teriyaki.

But I mostly do sushi so I don't have a bunch of experience with the cooked stuff these days. I don't remember friends not liking it at any place I've gone, though.

Hands down best Japanese food in Anchorage BY FAR is Kumagoro downtown or Kansha on King St. Great variety and Kumagoro's ramen is amaaazing. Kansha also has a Hawaiian food menu which is very good. It's the only places my Japanese grandmother will go to and one of the only ones left that isn't run by Koreans. I believe Yamatoya and Tempura Kitchen have changed management. We don't go there anymore

I go to Kansha sometimes. They're cool, owned by Japanese Hawaiians. Yuri, the sushi chef, used to work at Pete's, and at the place on Huffman before that. I know, you said NON-sushi, but just so you know.

Kumagoro baby... going there since 1980 and always go. They have the real ramen with pork and corn and seaweed... rice balls... ask anyone who knows me (ambird, monika) and they'll tell you it's my favorite restaurant in the world.
