Does anyone else love it? Where do you go to get it? I miss C'Est La Vie, the little French place that used to be where El Tango is now, at Tudor and Old Seward.
Corsair has the best escargots I've tasted in Anchorage. They used to have escargots en croute, with a teeny filo cap on each little snail compartment. Now it's more the usual kind, but I loves me some snails, and then to sop up the garlic butter with fresh-baked bread... Yum!
Also, they have a great butterleaf salad. Their duck is a little too rich for me, and the last few times I've been they didn't have coq au vin on the menu, which I also like quite a bit.
Crazy Croissant was a nice little bakery near Minnesota and Morthern Lights that went out of business. I hear good things about the French Oven (I think that's the name), right behind the DMV. There are other restaurants here and there with French menu items.
Oh, and Sea Galley? I got escargots there once. I would say that you probably should avoid those.
Anyone else? Because I really love the French cuisine.

Re: French Cuisine...
Mon, October 1, 2007 - 7:10 PMYes! Yesyesyes! I'm a total Francophile., my family is French and I happily wallow in all aspects of that. I have not had any food at Corsair, although I know a guy named Dane who cooks there, he comes in and gets lunch from us all the time. I will have to ask him about that. I have only had drinks there. I hope to go there again soon. I have the escargot at Club Paris every year, Colin and I have it with Amaretto Sours every year on our anniversary. :)
Crazy Croissant didn't go out of business, they changed their name to Cafe Croissant, which is what resides behind the DMV on Benson. We get bread and pastries from there at the kitchen.
Sea Galley? Ewwwww... -

Re: French Cuisine...
Mon, October 1, 2007 - 7:13 PMI just figured that out with a Google search. French Oven is on the 1400 block of 31st Ave., also in Spenard.
I don't remember whether I've had the escargots at Club Paris.
Here's an idea: I grab my friend Loren and go to the Corsair lounge. He gets a beer and some beer-battered halibut appetizer and I get the butterleaf salad and the escargot. I do the same at Simon's: eat their loverly appetizers (and that WONDERFUL wild berry ice cream), and sometimes get a real entree. It's very economical. -

Mon, October 1, 2007 - 7:34 PMI am a big fan of appetizers instead of entrees while out with friends. You start someplace nice with a couple drinks and one appetizer, hit a couple more bars, maybe for some music, then another nice place for another appetizer and a nightcap. Love this routine. -

Thu, October 18, 2007 - 8:27 PMI still haven't been there yet, but I called Cafe Croissant last week and the girl told me that it's a nice place, about $20 a plate, and that they will be getting their beer & wine license soon so they expect business to bump then. She was suggesting reservations already. -

Re: French Cuisine...
Sat, October 20, 2007 - 12:43 AMI thought Cafe Croissant was the current version of Crazy Croissant and had some of the same owners. At least when I went there about a year ago they had the same chicken pot pie at Cafe Croissant that used to be the star dish at Crazy Croissant. I may have jumped to the wrong conclusion about ownership based on this dish.
The Corsair is pretty much the only option for traditional French haute cuisine in Anchorage. It also has an excellent wine list and nice dim surroundings, with surprisingly skillful chefs. MMM - I remember the escargot en croute. Sad to hear it is no longer on the menu.
Other than the Corsair, having good French food in Anchorage pretty much means cooking it yourself. When I was at the Dimond Costco yesterday, I saw they were selling the two-volume set of Julia Childs' Mastering the Art of French Cooking. These classics will help anyone successfully cook French food.
Speaking of the Dimond Costco, they have an unusually good selection of excellent imported cheeses right now. -

Re: French Cuisine...
Sun, October 21, 2007 - 10:15 PMWhat about the Clair de Lune on Denali St. or Jen's on Arctic? I'll be it not "traditional", but a very good representations of current french cuisine.
I love the Corsair but haven't been back since the remodel. As a matter of fact it has been a long time since I last ate there and the escargot was the best I have ever had. I am sorry to hear it's no longer available.
I would agree with you...the best food is best prepared in your own kitchen. I agree that the Child'd books are a good start but would also point people to the Cooks Illustrated magazine and some of the online resources like Youtube.com for cooking prep tips say:

Many love this little spot, but I can take it or leave it personally. I don't think of it as French except for the name...

Mon, October 22, 2007 - 6:41 PMCorsair does have escargot, and it's good, but last few times I went it wasn't en croute.
I've heard "take it or leave it" many times about Clair d'Loon.
And Christy, why have we not been to lunch more than once? We need to get on that.

Wed, November 28, 2007 - 11:02 PMKnow what/ I don't remember. I can imagine that it's good. They usually do a pretty nice job on everything.
Could be that each time I've gone, I've been with someone who isn't into snails. -

Thu, November 29, 2007 - 1:37 AMYup. I concur. Find other snail friends and let's GO!
I'd prefer to eat at a place than can prepare then so they don't taste like garlic-coated pencil erasers.
