Re: book
Wed, January 17, 2007 - 9:22 PMIf they wanted it, that would probably take 2 more years. No, my guys are great--however they are just two guys with no staff running and promoting a publishing company, a record label and a record store (the store does have a staff), so they are spread a little thin. They are good friends and awesome people--it's just a frustrating situation because they had me start promoting it--thinking they could make the original deadline--and then I end up looking like a chump when things get pushed back for reasons beyond my control. The rub is that you can't really complain too much when someone offers to spend the equivalent of the price of a very nice used car to publish what you wrote.
Actually, if I wasn't already committed I would self-publish it just to get it over with at this point. I'm sure I'll make more money.
And that's what I'll do with the follow-up projects.
But it's nice from a credibility standpoint to build on a reputation with a book that someone *else* published, and distributed to major book stores, which I can't really do on my own. After this comes out, I can self publish projects as soon as I can finish them and always have that "published author" credibility. People who don't start with that always have to get around the "vanity publishing" stigma.
It will come out eventually, and it will be great -

Wed, January 17, 2007 - 9:59 PMI believe & trust & still look forward to it. Do you think there is some gay conspiracy working against you? I'm not talkin shit. It's an honest question. I was just thinking of that as a possibility myself. I was also wondering if your affiliation with the COS could help in some way? If there is not someway they can help make it happen? How the fuck are we gonna rule the world if we can't help each other make it happen? -

As for the CoS...well...my publishers are both fellow Priests.

Re: book
Sat, March 10, 2007 - 6:46 AMWell I got mine coming in the mail but in case I need to purchase emerganecy copies for friends ( lol ) I was wondering. There are two Borders near me. Because I have a feeling that once I get to reading it I am going to want to buy a few copies for some friends as gifts. Even my friend Christie that is married with three kids is interested. She & her husband are from New Orleans and have always had alot of "gay" friends. I had sent her two links of yours night before last and she said they looked interesting. Then yesterday morning we were talking and I brought it up. I mentioned Jack and she said "Oh. The guy with the baseball bat?" lol And I said yes, he looks very Reservoir Dog-ish in that picture. : ) The picture reminds me of Rammstein in suits too. When I look at pictures sometimes I wonder what the person is thinking when it was taken or what the picture itself says. Is there a message that is conveys? Like, "Don't fuck with me retard! I will beat you down like a bitch dog!" or "I have started a shirt storm or controversy and am about to knock one out of the park! HOMERUN!!!!" Or if it's just a cool pic you thought of. I was wondering too, if a few weeks ago when you mentioned you had to go to a photo shoot, if this picture was a result of that shoot? I would like to have the postcard and the baseball bat picture blown up and made into a poster I can frame and put on my wall. : ) And I don't want to be telling anyone what to do but I was thinking that if the postcard were made into a poster, that the writing on the back of the postcard could be put somewhere on the bottom left too. Anyway, enough raving on about it this morning. -

Re: book
Tue, March 20, 2007 - 6:33 PMI GOT IT IN THE MALE, uh, MAIL TODAY!!!! YAY!!! I lated it on my shelf next to my office door and it was amazing how FIVE or more straight women, who are all dear friends, picked it up and read the back and inside inserts and flipped through it. They were all very interested in reading it. I now have a list of 8 people that want to read it after I finish! lol I just got it in the mail today at 1:00 pm. So between 1 and 5, just by sitting on my shelf, THAT much interest was generated! THAT was incredible. A straight married Philipino man read the back and inside inserts too with great interest. I really like the way it's put together too. The aesthetic feel when I hold it in my hands. One lady did coment that while she found it very interesting it seemed like to her that Jack thinks of women as on a lower level than men like most men supposedly do. I said I wasnt sure but that I think Jack has stated that he knows some (a few) cool women, but that he is into men. She was actually more interested in it than everyone else. She took her 15 minute break and was thumbing through it and commenting to me about certain things that she agreed with. I can't wait to start reading it later tonight and at work on my lunch tommorrow. I'm so excited I feel like going on www.silverdaddies.com and beating off live on cam in the chatroom right now! lol But I'm not going to right now because I want to check out all the tribe posts. Hmm. More later yall.
Cheers again to Jack. I hope to visit my friend Dan in Portland sometime in the next few months and am gonna see if Jack wants to go to Gustaves German restaurant for some schnitzel and beer! That place is the BEST!!! If you havent been you gotta go.

Re: book
Fri, March 30, 2007 - 6:45 AMIncidentally, I just wanted to note that I'm watching the posts you guys have posted to other tribes about the book.
The discussions that are happening barely qualify as discussions...more like feminist theory bible study, or a communist rally. They really keep proving my points over and over again. Gay equals radical feminist/communist. Doubly so for "queer" these days.
I also love it when people bring up gay bashers, as if they are roaming the streets and are going to "get you" and "show you that a fag is a fag to them no matter what." Talk about fear mongering. Unless I suddenly decide to be a drag queen and hang out around straight nightclubs after closing time when everyone is drunk, I have a better chance of being struck by lightning.
These are sad, damaged people. -

Re: book
Fri, March 30, 2007 - 7:08 AMPeople like to use the Mathew Shepard story as their own personal woundology. Gaybashing totally sucks and the Mathew Shepard story and so many others, are not going to serve as a suitable foundation to rebuff your views. People get so offended and opinionated without even having read the book it is rediculous. I know I should be done reading it already but I'm not. Hopefully in the next few days. So far I'm liking it. -

Fri, March 30, 2007 - 7:20 AM"Woundology" is a funny word. I am trying to launch the word 'victimania', = "an exaggerated or obsessive sense of victimhood". Lots and lots of people in 'Merica have this.

Re: book
Fri, March 30, 2007 - 10:56 AMI've never been gay bashed in my life and I don't think someone would even try based upon my personality and overall 'look'. I have though, on the other hand, kicked a lot of homophobic ass in my day as a metalhead troublemaker and made it a point to let them know that a 'faggot' kicked their teeth in. I've been in so many fights I couldn't count em all. Have the scars and three missing teeth to prove it.
Of course that was back in the day when fighting and starting shit was fun for me.
I've since grown up and am now an adult. LOL
My boyfriend of 9 years on the other hand became a missing person in 2001 and was murdered because of homophobia. Of course Matthew Shepard gets all the emdia attention because he's the stereotype. Not that I don't feel for him (i have a personal experience with it afterall), but it seems to me that the "weak" stereotype of homosexual men even carries on over to missing person/murder cases as shown by the media.
If they keep em stereotypical in all aspects of media then the heterosexual community is SAFE in knowing that "fags are different", like animals in a fucking cage. God forbid there be a gay man that matches a heterosexual male in terms of masculinity, because to do that means that WE ARE JUST LIKE YOU (the whole "if HE'S queer than "I" could be or my buddy could be too" mentality) and that terrifies the straight community.
I am doing the exact same thing as you Jack in exposing this, which is why I respect you.
The only difference is you're doing with literature and I'm doing it with film.
Two different mediums on two different scales.
Those who don't read will watch and those who don't watch will read.
And together, we'll knock shit out.
Cheers.
Johnny.

Re: book
Fri, March 30, 2007 - 8:35 PMWoundology is a term I discovered years ago on public radio. Caroline Myss was the featured guest. I was very interested in what they were talking about and bought a two cassette set of hers called Why People Don't Heal - And How They Can. She has a book by the same title. It's pretty good stuff. I just wish the cassettes I have were available on cd. I dont even own a fucking cassette player or vcr anymore.
I don't know Johnny that well really but ever since I saw him on the Gay Metalheads tribe I have thought he is pretty fuckin cool. : ) I am also very interested in your work Johnny. Right now though I bought an expensive car and all my extra money barely covers my alcohol and substance use! lol Besides my personal bs I do want to say I am very sorry about your man Johnny. That is a hard thing. It is so heavy I am apprehensive to even comment on. Just want to let you know that even in this hard heart of mine there is still quite a bit of compassion. Your sharing this in your post touched me, right in the middle of my heart! When I posted about Mathew Shepard this morning, afterward I was thinking some people might take that the wrong way (enevitably). I could have made a point without mentioning his name. His is a tragic story. I do not belittle him at all. He's a victim of fucked up people. My point was that so many gay people use the reality of gay bashing as a platform for so much fucked up thinking. Bashing is bashing. or saying things like they think he has a problem being gay and needing acceptance from heterosexuals, etc..... just doesnt make sense to me. I understand what they are saying but they arent getting what what he's saying at all. They so easily discount what he's saying. I may or may not ultimately totally agree with everything Jack has to say in his book or elsewhere. But for now, I really REALLY am enamoured with what he has brought to the table. I will probably always love Priscilla movie and lots of gay shit. I love dragqueens and all sorts of "freaky" people because I have always seen "gay" as totally rebellious. When I turned 21 and had just moved to SF and it really hit me that I am my own man and need to truly live my life for myself and not others is when I experienced true freedom. I am now 38 and in the past 17 years trust me I have experienced pretty much everything that freedom has to offer! Right now, I do not see Jacks "agenda" as sexist, homophobic, woman hating, etc..... I see it as common sense! It's controversial. Not to me so much, but to alot of people. It's thought provoking & challenging. It's a refreshing new breath in the world! It's a proclamation and declaration. It's wisdom. It's "manly". It embraces masculinity. His words and other peoples words negative and positive in response are raw & pure and speak volumes to the mindset of humanity as a whole. I tend to like to share with others when I think of something as valid, dynamic, exciting, revelatory, (so many more adjectives). There are things that really interest me and Jacks work does it for me. If I thought it was a load of crap I certainly wouldnt be raving on about it like I do. Not that I'm like "spreading the word" like I was so dedicated to when I was 17 and all swept up in the Jesus heavy metal circus. I still even love those old bands like Bloodgood, Stryper, Vengeance Rising (Human Sacrifice!!!!) FUCK YEAH!!!!! lol Barren Cross, etc..... There is a time and a place for everything. Right now, today, I am highly interested in Jack and his book and where this will take us. -
-
Re: book
Fri, March 30, 2007 - 8:51 PMFUCK!!! Halfway through my post I went back and was going to add more and it started erasing what I had written. After I said "Bashing is bashing" I think I said something about not seeing what Jack has to say as being Sexist or "woman hating" etc..... And that Mathew Shepard and all other victims of violence are relevant to us all, "gay" or str8" All true victims of injustice are equal in their circumstance. Whether someone is bashed to death because they are "gay" or for any other reason is fucked up. For "gay" people to crusade about it gets old. It's wrong. Everyone knows and agrees on that. But for gay people to use negative events as an excuse for living in a perpetual state of vitimhood is obscene! If someone's got a problem with what he's saying I wonder if they have a problem with the womens rights movement? The United Negro College Fund? Etc.... There are so many things that are blown so far out of proportion these days. And sadly it is typically based on conjecture. Jacks word speaks for itself. Take it or leave it.

Re: book
Sat, March 31, 2007 - 12:48 PMThanks Jack.
I think that my work caters to a more younger crowd. Most young people in this day and age don't read, they'de rather throw on the "movie version of the book" if you know what I mean haha
When I said "we're doing pretty much the same thing, just on different scales" I meant it.
Jack does it more maturly with literature and the written word where my films are of the "underground style" so it's much more 'in your face' in terms of imagery and music and everything I do is somehow wrapped up in a heavy metal package.
Part of that package of course is reclaiming masculinity but my main goal and agenda is to educate the public that there are queers who are very masculine and into heavy metal. It doesn't always work though with other gay men because a lot of them are not interested in metal music or the metal lifestyle, so it goes ignored. In fact the majority of my sales are from overseas or from heterosexual WOMEN.
I think the only reason why my films sell to a gay audience (for the most part) is because of my appearance as shallow as that is, and they usually miss the overall point of what I'm trying to do. I imagine because I'm delving into an EXTREMELY masculine terrority (metal). A lot of homosexuals just cannot relate to that, where they CAN relate to Jack's book because the overall subject is masculinity and the "heavy metal" aspect is not there. I also throw in horror elements into a lot of my work as well and a lot of gay men don't know how to take underground film let alone an underground film with such a subject matter they cannot relate to.
There is a difference in educating about masculinity on a whole and eduating about a masculine lifestyle such as heavy metal.
I say that my work tends to be more younger related simply because I think younger people now relate better with films and music than books and literature. Not all of course, but most. An older gay man is more likely to pick up a book and read studies on this subject than they are to watch two greasy longhaired headbangers gallavaning around town over blistering metal; unless they want to jerk off to that fantasy of MY REALITY (which I'm sure I get with my films too from certain people).
I've received hundreds of messages from young "alternative types" claiming that because of my films and because of who I am it has helped them come out of the closet. For once, they had a role model that wasn't Will & Grace but rather someone they could relate to.
On the same scale, I've had tons of messages from young GAY men who claim they were ready to kill themselves because "nobody understood them", or they thought they were the only "gay rocker" alive, until they seen my work.
That in itself makes it all worthwhile to me.
Older gay men tend to ignore my work and that's where JACK comes in and does the job and kudos for him for doing it.
A lot of gay men my age have that fantasy of 'hooking up with' those kind of rocker guys that beat them up in high school. The problem that a lot of them will never admit that.
I've been a big fan of John Waters older work, not because it's 'gay', but because it's pure underground film at it's finest.
It's so over-the-top that the gay factor doesn't even come into play for me.
We may do things a bit differently in terms of subject matter and marketing, but all in all we're doing the same kind of thing.
And that my friend, kicks ass.
ps: Jack; my films have sold out about a month ago; I'm currently redoing my website and clips will be put up this month. I'll definately let you know though! You can email me to at: johnnyterris@yahoo.com
Cheers beers and rock n roll!

Re: book
Sat, March 31, 2007 - 1:39 PMIt's funny how even though Rob Halford & Clive Barker are openly "gay", they still have a predominantly heterosexual fanbase. I have loved heavy metal and horror since I was a kid and don't think I will ever change. I think alot of people in general, gay and str8, like to imagine or pretend they are better than other people. It makes them feel good. If some people want to think negatively about such things I don't give a fuck really. I love all kinds of music but heavy metal and industrial are my favorites. It's powerfull. I drove through the castro one day and was stopped at the redlight at 18th & Castro. I had Rammsteins Herzeleid cd blaring and I forget which song it is but there is a point where the singer is yelling something that sounds really fuckin angry then the guitars start wailing away. Right when that happened there was a gay guy standing on the corner and he looked like he had just shit his pants. Like he thought I was going to get out of my car and beat his ass or something. It was true fear. He was scared shitless of me. Why? Because he's a weak ass little pussy? Because he's not into metal? It's agressive. It's strength. It's power! I'm a megalomaniac and I eat it up like Jack Radcliffs big hairy cock! I just laughed and took off when the light changed. -

Marvin: Halford and Barker....and do you notice that both artists do not shout that they are queer from the rooftops or wear it like a badge on their sleeve? I think that's why more heterosexual people like their (as well as my own) work and I think that (along with the subject matter) is why our fanbase is more prodominantly "straight".
And dude, I can't tell you how many times I've gotten that "car" thing. I've been kicked out of gay bars for my appearance by bouncers and owners who refused to believe I was gay and totally believed I was there to gay bash someone.
It's so unnessesary. -

Sun, April 15, 2007 - 2:39 PMI'm only on page 61 so far. I do like it and have to sit myself down somewhere and force myself to finish it soon. Jack says alot of things I think alot of men think about but has taken the time to put it down in book form. So far I think it's excellent. Some people have told me they think it's sexist and anti - female. I say "I don't think it's anti female. It's pro male. Pro masculinity. It isnt "dissing" women. It's not about women at all. It's about men being men. It's about masculinity. I could be wrong as I havent finished it yet but I still say that any gay people or women that have some negative bullshit to say about Jack & his book should seriously fucking just read the god damned thing before they open their blabbering insignificant mouths.
