animal totems and spirit guides

i don't know much about animal totems and spirit guides but i have always been very intersted in them and i do believe that they exist. i was wondering how one goes about figuring out their animal totem and spirit guides?.

i've felt very drawn to large birds of prey my whole life and just in the last 4 years i seem to really be connecting with owls. it is always so special to me when i hear one. sometimes they divebomb my car at nite. one time one sat in the tree outside my house and hooted for a few nites. then it followed me into town and waited on the telephone wire while i was getting my food. perhaps it is all just coincidence but it does feel special to me... i looked up the owl in this 'animals speak' book i have... most of the attributes that are associated with it are attributes i feel i have... especially the ability to see thru peoples lies and see deeper into them. it frustrates my partners and others at times. do u guys think this could be a spirit guide or totem?

just wondering anyways

    Hello Memengwaa,
Sounds like owl is connected to you. I suggest looking up the animals you feel connected with and you may find either attributes that you new you had or some which you didn't know you had.
Here is something I found on the net about finding with you animal guide/totem.

You do not choose an animal guide as your personal spirit guide. The animal chooses you and they decide to whom they will reveal themselves and make their friend. Do not fall into the trap of saying, “Gosh, I think the wolf is a smart, good looking and powerful animal, so the wolf will become my animal guide.” It does not work this way.
Each Animal has its own Medicine which is unique to that specific creature as gifted by the Great Mystery and its spirit cannot be chosen like the color of your new car. Discovering who your animal guides are is a process of paying attention to the spirits around you and following the signs. It is a process of developing your inner knowledge and spiritual understanding.

An individual can not be assigned a spirit guide by another person, regardless of who that person maybe, no more than another person can say how or when the Great Mystery of Life will be known to you.

What happens if you want an animal spirit so bad you can taste it (not literally) and one has not come to you? We have two suggestions for this case. First, pray about it. Second, be satisfied with whatever happens or does not happen. It if comes, then it comes. If it does not, then it does not. End of question.

Have you read "Medicine Cards: The Discovery of Power Through the Ways of Animals by Jamie Sams"? It is really helpful also for understanding animal spirits.

    Hope it helps.

Owl medicine (from the Medicine Cards book)

Owl medicine is symbolically associated with clairvoyance, astral projection, and magic, both black and white. Owl is called Night Eagle on several medicine wheels used by Amerindian teachers. Traditionally, Owl sits in the East, the place of illumination. Since time immemorial, humanity has been afraid of the night, the dark, and unseen - waiting fearfully for the first crack of morning light. Conversely, night is Owl's friend.

Owl hunts its prey at night. Not only can Owl see in the dark, it can also accurately pinpoint and identify sound. This gives it a great advantage when seeking food. Owls are the night hunters. Some Native people are fearful of Owl and call its feathers "deceiver feathers." An Owl feather is silent. You cannot hear Owl when it flies, but its prey definitely knows when it strikes, for its beak and talons are razor sharp.

Owl is oftentimes the medicine of sorcerers and witches. If Owl is your medicine, you will be drawn to magical practices and perhaps explore the dark arts. You should resist any temptation to practice black magic or any art that takes energy away from another person or being. If you have Owl medicine, these night birds will have a tendency to collect around you, even in the daytime, because they recognize a kinship with you.

Is it any wonder that in many cultures Owl is a symbol for wisdom? This is because Owl can see that which others cannot, which is the essence of true wisdom. Where others are deceived, Owl sees and knows what is there.

Athena, the Greek goddes of wisdom, had a companion Owl on her shoulder which revealed unseen truths to her. Owl had the ability to light up Athena's blind side, enabling her to speak the whole truth, as opposed to only a half truth.

If Owl is your personal medicine, no one can deceive you about what they are doing, no matter how they try to disguise or hide it from you. You may be a little frightening to be around, since so many people have ulterior motives which you see right through. If you are unaware of your medicine power, you may take your keen insights and abilities for granted. Others never do. You may frighten them and reflect their blindness, for you cannot be fooled. Owl medicine people know more about an individual's inner life than that person knows about herself or himself.

If you have pulled the Owl card, you are being asked to use your powers of keen, silent observaton to intuit some life situation. Owl is befriending you and aiding you in seeing the total truth. Owl can bring you messages in the night through dreams or meditation. Pay atention to the signals and omens. The truth always brings further enlightenment.

thanks for your response phoenix ;^) i appreciate the links that u posted. i've checked out those medicine cards before and i liked them. they definately resonated with me. they seemed genuine. i'd like to have a set of my own someday. it's funny i went to the site and asked for the animal medicine that i needed now and i drew the skunk card. having to do with self respect and bringing awareness of the type of people that i was attracting to me. it was so resonating with my life right now. i just had a major issue with my friend having to do with exactly that, self respect. the last 2 days. i could have let it slide. but i decided to stand up for myself and have some self respect. i think i managed it in a pretty non-offensive way too...

Glad it was of use to you! :)
The Medicine Cards are really great. I have used them at spiritual conventions to help people and the cards have always been very helpful. These cards can also help you to find your 9 totem animals (but you will need to remember that there are only 52 animals in this deck)

I pulled a card just now too. I got Porcupine / innocence. I guess I need to have faith and enjoy life a little more.

Just want to say....I love the Medicine Cards, too! There are some BLANK cards in there. I pulled one for my "Above" card and got an Intuition that it was a Camel (which isn't covered in the regular Medicine Card deck). That was years ago, and my intuitive choice of the Camel for my "Above" card still resonates with my Soul!!!

Camel? Wow! Sounds cool! Camel is a powerful spirit guide, but then again Maggie you are very powerful too! :) Yes, using the blank cards for animals you feel connected that are not in the deck is really great.

Here is another link on how to find your animal guide.

Maggie, I also pulled a blank card for my above card and I also immediately knew it was peacock. Peacock has been with me my entire life and often speaks to me in meditation.

Oooo, Petite, I LOVE peacocks, too! Once I went to a Native American Powwow and bought a handmade set of earring with peacock feathers on them.

Peacocks have played an enormous role in the Native American Indian culture and their feathers were and are often used for healing rituals and magical ceremonies; their beautiful and extravagant feathers were also used for making costumes headdresses and other ornamental pieces such as clothing and jewelry. Native Americans believe that the Peacock has strong medicine magic and many tribes consider Peacocks to be healers and clairvoyants themselves.

Here's a good page of Peacock Medicine!

Geez Maggie! How in the world do you hit the nail on the head everytime??? Thank you so much for that article. That is exactly perfectly on target.

I wonder what a peacock pearl is? I've never heard that term before. Of course, I have to have one now, whatever it is. I'll google...

I guess it's a black tahitian pearl with peacock colors. Luckily, I already have one of those. I suppose I should wear it more.

After I wrote that response to you, I went outside to go to lunch. Right in the middle of my path was a huge beetle that was shimmering with a green irridescent color that was exactly like a peacock color! I thought of the scarab! I put my hand down, and it "rode" on my hand while I walked down to my sat on my ring finger looking like a beautiful ring! Then it put its wings up, flew onto my right abdomen, and then flew away. I think it did a healing on me! :-)

Maggie, that reminds me of the story of Carl Jung, who was seeing a patient, a rich woman with a lot of anxiety. She was in the middle of explaining a dream to him, in which see had that Jung was to be her teacher because he presented her with a golden egyptian beetle. While she was telling this dream and going on about egyptian stuff, Jung actually heard tapping against his window, it was a gold beetle. He opened the window, scooped up the beetle, ever so slyly, and then walked up to her, still rambling on, and held out his hand, and said, "Is this your beetle?" Of course the catharsis of this synchronicity was all that she needed to open up her block to her own creativity.

                                O'siyo everyone:

Let's say we set aside the Medicine Deck for a little bit okay. The Medicine Deck is derived from the book Animal Speaks, which covers just about all of our Guides we can think of from Ants to Zebras. I see a lot of Wisdom within this Thread and I for one am Proud of all of you for passing on the Sacred Information. There are quite a few things we have to remember, your Spirit Animal has a Life's Path. Pay attention to it. Study what it eats...the old addage " you are what you eat" plays and important part here. Expecially if your Totem Animal is a Preditor. This adds another factor into not only your Spirit Guide but also into you. Study it's Living Habits, it might be Nocternal, or strictly a Day Hunter or Gatherer. There is a mistake we all make, men might find that the Animal that calls them is Feminine, and, the Women find out that they'res is Masculine. Please remember we all are Both so dont get upset there is Balance. We all need Balance between the Female and Male. I have Ranted long enough and I am Honored to become part of this Group and for this I thank you all.
                                May Peace Ride at your sides;

Yes, Animal Speak is also really great. I find it helpful to use the information in Animal Speak, Medicine cards and animal facts to learn as much about animals and animal spirits. It is truly interesting to find connections between animal guides an us (people).
