I have been seeing these birds all the time and tried to find more info about them. Do any of you know what they might represent? I have some ideas about them but am curious if any of you have had experiences with them and what they were.

Mergansers are a kind of duck that dives for fish - the males have a dark green head with white body and the females have a reddish brown tufted head with gray body. In the spring I was seeing mostly maies. Now I am seeing females, often with babies and see them flying in front of me with their very loud cries.

i was sleeping at the cold water campground in the mammoth lakes basin at 9,000' feet last monday all warm and cozy on my pad and in my bag under the pines and next to a gurgling creek.

i felt something rub my forehead then a big wet tongue swiped me fully awake. a full grown black bear was as startled as i was as i lifted my head. we both moved back to about 3' from each other. he seemed as suprised as me. we looked into each others eyes. no fear for maybe 10 seconds, then my right hand reached for my flashlight. maybe a deeper part of myself WAS afraid, i really cant say.he took 5 or 6 steps backwards, and sat down. after a few minutes i thumped the ground with my prosthetic leg and he slowly walked off. it took me about an half an hour to fall back asleep.

it was not a dream, i was fully awake.

what to make of this incredible event? any ideas, insights greatly appreciated.
When I first joined this tribe, I was intrigued. I love animals... just LOVE them!! They are much better than most of the two leggeds I know. LOL
But then, I got a little 'spooked' when I started reading about 'totems' and such. I baled!!

Now I am back, hoping that I can keep a happy medium... or median?... or y'know what I mean? Right? Okay, so I will be treading lightly. I may never post a reply or a topic after this one, but rather absorb what I feel is safe for me.
I find it very interesting. I am drawn to animals of all kinds and I have many critters in my house that I have rescued from bad situations... many!

My latest adventures have been with a particular Mantid that has taken up residence in my backyard 'city slicker' garden. Greg already knows the story and has enlightened me to a partial meaning for his existence. I am happy to say, I go into the garden seeking out Mr. Mustafa Mantid these days and he's almost always perched atop a huge tomato plant waiting for his daily shower.
The other critter that greets me in this garden is, a beautiful little hummingbird. I think it may be a 'she' so I give her the greeting and wish her well when she comes by. This particular hummingbird seems fearless of me. She hovers within a couple of feet and makes sure she has eye contact or she is on my 'facing' side always. Is there something to this? Am I just simply putting off some vibe that I love all creatures and they are welcome in my home and around it?

When I was at a 'touchy feely' pool thing today, in Santa Cruz, this salt water isopod sought me out and hung on my hand even when the curator person was trying to retrieve it. At first I was a little freaked out, thinking the woman was so adamant about getting it off me cuz it might sting or bite me, but that wasn't it. She just wanted to show it to the people next to me. LOL

Sometimes I feel like Mr. GreenJeans or Solomon or something.

Thanks for letting me share. Now, I'm off to make yummy goodies for my little hungry geckos :o)

Part of the shamanic tradition is connecting to the energies of the earth and all life upon it. To assist with this, animal imagery is strongly utilized. In the East, it is said that the way to heaven is through the feet. By connecting with the energies and rhythms of the earth, we give greater impulse to our life.
Animals fascinate people because they provide a spiritual tie to the earth, and can become symbols of great power and energy. There is an unconscious recognition that animals reflect archetypal forces within the world, reminding us of the primal sources from which we came. We can use animal imagery to learn about ourselves and to actualize their related archetypal energies.
Animals serve a great purpose in our spiritual development. In many myths and tales, animals speak, deliver messages, and call the individual to the hero's path of awareness. Animals are a part of the initiation process, leading individuals in and out of the wilderness of life.
Animal totems and guides assist us in breaking down barriers and opening up to the new. Carl Jung tells us that animals are representatives of Mother Earth. Part of the spiritual quest is to re-establish ties to the Great Mother which may be lost or forgotten within your life.
It is not enough to keep our images autistic and undeveloped. We must breathe new life into them by recognizing that all animal forms and images reflect archetypal forces. These forces have their own qualities and expressions which are evident through the natural behaviors and activities of the animal itself.
Though many people in todays world have lost or ignored the instinctive tie we have to the rhythm and patterns of nature, each of us can still develop our intuitive ties to enhace our lives. Every animals reflects specific energy patterns and by aligning ourselves with the animal, we align ourselves with the energy pattern that works thorugh it.
By studying and reading about animals, birds, fish, insects, reptiles, amphibians and more, we learn about the qualities they reflect in our selves and our life. This is essential to understand when we discover our true, personal spirit animals and totems. The more we learn of our totems, the more we honor the archetypal energies that affect us through them.. Each species has it own unique qualities. An ant may not seem as glamorous as a bear, but an ant is as industrious and has a strength that far exceeds it size.

The lion holds a variety of energies and is never what it appears to be. There is great myth and lore surrounding it.

Unlike other cats the lion lives in groups called prides. They live together in harmony and seldom fight amongst each other.

Lions are often spotted lying around not doing much at all. They seem to be saying don't bother me "I am busy relaxing." This is one reason why the energy of fearlessness has been associated with this beautiful creature. Lions can teach us the art of fearlessness if we allow ourselves to relax long enough to learn from it.

Those with this totem will find that their life lessons will involve dealing with groups and community in some way. They will also need to pay attention to the particular role they play within that group and work with others cooperatively. Lion people have the ability to be balanced leaders but need to keep jealous tendencies under control.

Lions do not fight for the sake of fighting only to defend their pride. They avoid confrontation and will leave the scene of danger whenever possible and can guide those with this totem out of unpleasant situations.

As odd as it might seem, whenever I see a lion it evokes a feeling of safety within me. I can remember always liking lions, as a child, from having a small stuffed lion to visiting a private owner's lion on the way to my Aunt's house out in Canandaigua, NY.

Does this mean I'm looking for a protector? (ugh)

This evening after I got home I was sitting here at the pc. I caught a flash of something from the corner of my eye, falling from the ceiling. After some searching I found a baby grasshopper on the table beside my subwoofer(maybe he likes the beat). So I put my hand down and he crawled right to my palm. This wan interesting because I have been in this place since November and this is the first one I have seen inside.
So on my hand he and I went to the bathroom to the bright light to get a picture. In the bathroom there was a larger one on my shower curtain. Two? Cool.
From ancient Egypt to contemporary China, they represent happiness, good
fortune, and a long life.
If the grasshopper/cricket appeals to you as a totem animal, you probably enjoy singing, dancing, and having a good time. You are open-minded and quite likely completely free of prejudice regarding gender, ethnic groups, or religions. As a spirit helper, you can rely on your guide to help you lighten up when you grow overly concerned about matters that are not as serious as you believe them to be.
The larger one jumped to my sink and may be feasting on my plant. I think he needs to go outside to his family.
Last week I saw a HUGE grasshopper, like one of the Texas sized ones sitting on top of the porch light fixture outside my door. I only gave thought to how large it was. It was there for two days. 3 within a week, maybe it's time to start getting the message.

Last time when I say, I love wolfs, I forget to give the specifics about what the significance if we have wolf totoms, so here is the breakdown. Like I said it before, I love its family oriented nature, adventure spirits, determination, & independence. Maybe deep down, I do have the wolf nature within me and wait for the call from the wild. (HAHA!)
Because wolf is a teacher and pathfinder, he comes when we need guidance in our lives. Those who have a Wolf Totem will move on to teach others about sacredness and spirituality. Wolf can also teach how to balance the responsibility of family needs and not to lose one's personal identity. Wolf also helps us to develop our strength and confidence in our decisions as well as trust our instincts . If you dream of white wolf that means you seek out the guidance in this point of your life. Overall, if the wolf appears in your life, that means one thing -----------Evaluation about your current life and develop the better balabce and relationship between your family, friends, & yourself
Howling! (oops! forget to upload the wolf pic)

My former fear of Scorpions

I commented this on my blog but I will expand a little here.
I don't remember when I started fearing Scorpions but it had to be as far back as I could remember. Growing up in East Texas, there were lots of Scorpion, prevelant everywhere and I was stung quite a few times growing up. And growing up I always heard how Scorpions are ugly, nasty, aggressive, to be feared and you should kill them on sight. These messages came from the adults in my life, hmm lets teach children these fears and see how they relate to nature as they grow up...how do they carry these fears into adulthood. Think "fear of change".
So I was absolutely terrified of them all my life. To the point that when I look back on it, the fear seemed irrational. If I saw one in a place I was living, I would panic and start thinking about moving to another place, if I saw one is a storage room I was petrified to ever go in there again. Irrational?
Around 2000, my ex love Christopher and I were having a discussion about fears and I brought up my intense fear of Scorpions. He asked me why I was afraid so afraid of change and afraid of death. Huh? My reply: "I'm not, what are you talking about"? So we talked a little further and as I listened, it made sense but I wasn't totally buying it. I was trying to look open minded but shuddering inside at the thought that I could possibly not be afraid of Scorpions. I had a ton of judgements against them. And in addition I had nightmares about Scorpions, the kind of nightmares where you wake up in a cold sweat, jump out of bed, take all the sheets off and do a thorough 3:00a.m. search before getting back in bed. Then have insomnia the rest of the night because one "might" be there or physically manifest from the dream.
Christopher explained to me that Scorpions represent change, changes in your life, associated with transformation and rising to new heights. The are also know for their secretiveness and passions. The Scorpion is also associated with sex, death and rebirth(on the spiritual level).
Shortly after I had the discussion with Christopher, rolling my eyes like he was nuts and thinking it on the inside, I had this dream:
Christopher and I were in a bathroom where I used to work. There was a small bark Scorpion crawling across the floor(bark scorpions are the most poisonous in this part of the US). So this thing is crawling across the floor, Christopher hands me a magazine while telling me to pick it up. I kept backing up and saying no, feeling myself sweat, intense fear. He kept pushing me to pick it up on the magazine. After awhile, I bent down and let it crawl onto the magazine. It simply sat there looking towards me, not moving. We were both frozen as we stared at each other. In the dream, Christopher was smiling. Then I woke up.

I called Christopher immediately and told him about the dream. Turns out that during the time I had this dream, I was searching and discovering my spiritual path in life. I was just coming into it and at times I was scared. A few weeks before I had this dream, I freaked and turned away from everything I was learning spiritually because it was too much to handle.
See where all this relates? I had the dream in conjunction with accepting my path, accepting change and breaking the fear barrier, and learning more about my acceptance fo death and what I chose to believe about the afterlife.
I have not had a dream about a Scorpion since the last nightmare. I have accepted my spiritual path very well. And I no longer have this fear of Scorpions. I very rarely see them. When I see them, it is usually during a time when I am going through some fear of change or acceptance block. I also may see them when I need to be reminded that light can be found within darkness if we channel our passions correctly.
I am not saying that I want to run over, pick it up and cuddle, but I don't run, I admire, appreciate and thank them for the lessons.

Random Totem Description

So I thought I would just pick a random totem I am not familiar with, came up with Copperhead.

Copperhead is a poisonous snake related to the rattlesnake. Has a copper head from which it gets its name and it also has hourglass shaped body patches. The hourglass is a reminder of the lessons of most snakes-continuing cycle of life, death and rebirth.
When the copperhead appears, our own sesnsitivity to others will increase. We will sense the auras of others, more easily and effectively.
When the copperhead appears as a messenger ot totem, the bring the message of standing one's ground, even if based soley upon a feeling. And if need be, do not hesitate to strike in defense of oneself. In time, that feeling will prove itself out and standing your ground will be confirmed as having been the right thing to do.
All venomous snakes have lessons associated with healing and toxicity around us. They sometimes appear to awaken our own innate healing energies and abilities. They also appear to herald the need to cleanse and purify some area of our life. They reflect a change in the chemistry of our body or life situation-not necessarily for good or bad, but just a change.
One of the mysteries of the copperhead is that twice as many males are born as females. The male energy is associated with the electrical, assertive aspects of life. When the copperhead appears it is usually an indication we need to get more assertive and aggressive in our healing and other activities. When we see copperhead we should also take a look at the process of death and rebirth in some area of our life, particularly associated with healing.
--------------------------------------
I haven't seen a copperhead since I left Texas in 79, there are none where I live or anywhere near this region. However I have looked for rattlesnakes for photography and have yet to find one...hmmm. I guess I get my rebirth, death and change messages from scorpions....interesting.
