Night Light: An Evening of Luminous Environments

On the evening of May 17th, 2008, the entire building that houses Climate Theater and Gallery NINE (formerly the Anon Gallery) will be taken over by a select group of artists who use light and electricity. 22 eclectic spaces including two theater spaces, multiple rooms as well as a rooftop garden will be filled with illuminated installations, projections, sculptures and performances. The curation is by a group of local artists who are the visual arts and film curators for Climate Theater.

Climate Theater is an alternative arts space in San Francisco's SOMA district that encourages the development of non-traditional performance and experimental work with a focus on collaboration and exploration. Established in 1985, Climate is known for such innovative landmark programs as the Solo Mio Festival, which helped launch the careers of Josh Kornbluth, Anne Galjour and Justin Bond and is currently home to the weekly Music Box Series, Night Vision experimental film series and a wide variety of new circus and other theatrical events. The Climate is run by artistic director Jessica Heidt, formerly of the Magic Theatre.

About our Curators:
G. Cole Allee received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2007. Her work has been exhibited in San Francisco, LA and Tokyo. She is a photo-based artist exploring landscape as cultural iconography, and sometimes, vice versa. She has lived in San Francisco for a decade, teaching photography to youth at risk in Bayview Hunter's Point and recently with the Sixth Street Photography Workshop. While at SFAI she co-curated the Swell Gallery, the graduate venue. She is currently one of the Visual Arts curators for the Climate Theater

Jen Cohen is a video, performance artist who attempts to break the narrative, cinematic genre through the creation of abstract video motifs projected onto non-traditional surfaces. She has exhibited her work through out the Bay Area including venues such as the de Young Museum, Recombinant Media Lab, CNMAT, SomArts, 21 Grand, Roxie Cinema, The Lab, The Fine Arts Cinema and Artists Television Access (ATA). She received a B.F.A in Media Arts from California College of the Arts. Last October she started the 4d Dream-a-thon experimental film series at The Climate Theater and continues to co-curate the series

Kaliisa Conlon is a film and video artist based in San Francisco. After performing with her mystic rock band Pizza Party in the Pacific NW, she received her BFA in Film and Video at California College of the Arts in 2007. Kaliisa now co-curates the experimental film series at the Climate Theater in San Francisco and concocts her witchy art and psychic films from her bedroom in the Mission.

Victoria Mara Heilweil is a photographic artist, educator and curator. She received her MFA in Photography from California College of the Arts in 1995. Her work has been exhibited nationally in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. Victoria was the curator and co-owner of a cooperative art gallery in the East Village in NYC. Currently, she is one of the Visual Arts curators for the Climate Theater and runs "Show and Tell" a monthly slide slam and pot luck. www.victoriaheilweil.com

Brendan Leonard uses a variety of media to explore the language and role of conceptual art in the 21st century. He received his BFA in Media Arts from California College of the Arts in 2008, and lives in Oakland, CA. Brendan is currently co-curating a film/video series at the Climate Theater in San Francisco. Liena Vayzman is a photographer, video artist, and curator based in San Francisco. She earned her PhD in Art History at Yale, went to art school in France, and is part of the GIA: Gender Intelligence Agency. Her interests include interdisciplinary collaboration and radical queer visual culture. Most recently, she curated "HOME: The Aesthetics and Politics of Home in Contemporary Art" at Root Division, SF, and has exhibited nationally and internationally. www.lienavayzman.com
