Show and Tell: Your Monthly Art Fix at the Climate Theater

Show and Tell: Your Monthly Art Fix at the Climate Theater is back and better than ever!

We will be resuming the Show and Tell slide slam and potluck on Sunday, June 15th from 7-9pm.
All future Show and Tell events will be on the 3rd Sunday of the month at this same time.

This event is for anyone who wants to show their artwork (of any media) for 5 minutes to the crowd along with eating,
drinking and socializing. Feedback is not required, but can be requested.

We can accommodate both digital and traditional slide projection. 5 minutes each, sign up at the event.

Everyone is welcome to attend whether they wish to show work or not.

For those of you who made it to the last GALLERIE N!NE multi-culti event we have another on the way this Saturday, May 31st!

To those of you who are just getting this for the first time and have been wondering what happened to the 9th and Folsom space, well after a little time off to recreate a new vibe, we have launched GALLERIE N!NE! - a gallery/theater/jazzy/dancy/shopping kind of interactive socially flirtatious cocktail zone!

It is not quite the same as before. What is going on now is a voluntary (but strongly suggested) donation policy - for both admission and beverages. This is to overcome certain obstacles that may interfere with entertainment issues. We hope you will make this choice to support this very worthwhile gallery and theater experience - and the community of artists behind it. Please come ready to be generous , so that this unusual venue can survive to bring more art and culture your way! Thank you in advance!

Night Light: An Evening of Luminous Environments

On the evening of May 17th, 2008, the entire building that houses Climate Theater and Gallery NINE (formerly the Anon Gallery) will be taken over by a select group of artists who use light and electricity. 22 eclectic spaces including two theater spaces, multiple rooms as well as a rooftop garden will be filled with illuminated installations, projections, sculptures and performances. The curation is by a group of local artists who are the visual arts and film curators for Climate Theater.

Climate Theater is an alternative arts space in San Francisco's SOMA district that encourages the development of non-traditional performance and experimental work with a focus on collaboration and exploration. Established in 1985, Climate is known for such innovative landmark programs as the Solo Mio Festival, which helped launch the careers of Josh Kornbluth, Anne Galjour and Justin Bond and is currently home to the weekly Music Box Series, Night Vision experimental film series and a wide variety of new circus and other theatrical events. The Climate is run by artistic director Jessica Heidt, formerly of the Magic Theatre.

About our Curators:
G. Cole Allee received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2007. Her work has been exhibited in San Francisco, LA and Tokyo. She is a photo-based artist exploring landscape as cultural iconography, and sometimes, vice versa. She has lived in San Francisco for a decade, teaching photography to youth at risk in Bayview Hunter's Point and recently with the Sixth Street Photography Workshop. While at SFAI she co-curated the Swell Gallery, the graduate venue. She is currently one of the Visual Arts curators for the Climate Theater

Jen Cohen is a video, performance artist who attempts to break the narrative, cinematic genre through the creation of abstract video motifs projected onto non-traditional surfaces. She has exhibited her work through out the Bay Area including venues such as the de Young Museum, Recombinant Media Lab, CNMAT, SomArts, 21 Grand, Roxie Cinema, The Lab, The Fine Arts Cinema and Artists Television Access (ATA). She received a B.F.A in Media Arts from California College of the Arts. Last October she started the 4d Dream-a-thon experimental film series at The Climate Theater and continues to co-curate the series

Kaliisa Conlon is a film and video artist based in San Francisco. After performing with her mystic rock band Pizza Party in the Pacific NW, she received her BFA in Film and Video at California College of the Arts in 2007. Kaliisa now co-curates the experimental film series at the Climate Theater in San Francisco and concocts her witchy art and psychic films from her bedroom in the Mission.

Victoria Mara Heilweil is a photographic artist, educator and curator. She received her MFA in Photography from California College of the Arts in 1995. Her work has been exhibited nationally in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. Victoria was the curator and co-owner of a cooperative art gallery in the East Village in NYC. Currently, she is one of the Visual Arts curators for the Climate Theater and runs "Show and Tell" a monthly slide slam and pot luck. http://www.victoriaheilweil.com

Brendan Leonard uses a variety of media to explore the language and role of conceptual art in the 21st century. He received his BFA in Media Arts from California College of the Arts in 2008, and lives in Oakland, CA. Brendan is currently co-curating a film/video series at the Climate Theater in San Francisco. Liena Vayzman is a photographer, video artist, and curator based in San Francisco. She earned her PhD in Art History at Yale, went to art school in France, and is part of the GIA: Gender Intelligence Agency. Save the Cow Palace

THE DICKENS FAIR AND THE COW PALACE

State Senator Leland Yee Ph.D., under pressure
from the Daly City Council, is proposing to
“surplus” the Cow Palace and sell it to Daly
City. Daly City will then sell most of the land
to condo developers and pocket the
profits. Letter writing WILL stop this. Senator
Yee has ONLY heard from Daly City. Let him know
you oppose selling the Cow Palace!!!

(no voting date is set - but it could be
soon). This bill wrongly proposes to SELL the Cow Palace to Daly City!

We must defeat SB1527 or the Dickens Fair will likely die.
It would take years, if it’s even possible, to
relocate and resurrect the Dickens Fair.
Red Barn Productions has studied all the venues
that could physically host the Dickens Fair and
there are NO other places that currently
work. All are either too expensive, too small,
are unavailable between Thanksgiving and
Christmas OR require unaffordable retrofits in
order to be permitted for public assembly. So,
Save the Cow Palace and Save The Dickens Fair. It's that simple AND
serious.

Here's the scoop:

The Cow Palace has a perfectly good plan to meet
the needs of the local community and Daly City by
providing them 13 acres of its’ unused
land. Yes, rock concerts bring public problems,
according to Daly City, but they also bring
public $$$ to the local community. Senator Yee's
Legislation SB1527 is doubly wrong. It proposes
we, as California State Citizens, sell OUR Cow
Palace to Daly City so they can bulldoze it and
profit by selling it to private developers. If
that isn't bad enough, SB1527 also deprives us of
our RIGHT to use a facility that WE own!!

This is like selling off a chunk of Golden Gate
Park because a nearby neighborhood proclaims
“unanimously” it needs more space for
development. It doesn't work that way. We get

others who use the Cow Palace, also help pay for
police to patrol the area year-round as well as during big events.

Please reconsider SB1527. There is a better way
to help Daly City and Bayshore than destroying

No drummers please

I have been noticing for the last 2 parties that the drummer boys in there get a little annoying. Last night was really ridiculous with a drumset being played in the main room after a bunch of ppl told him off from the other room.
Sure, I like drumming, but not on the dance floor. I would go to a drum circle for that. I prefer to leave the music to the DJs, and suggest the drummers show some respect for their effort and the music flow.
Sure, a few people might appreciate the drummers but a whole lot do not. Everyone I talked to on the floor was bothered by the drumming because it gets annoyingly loud and drowns out the music and kills the precision and atmosphere of the music.

I would encourage the organizers to pay heed to this issue...the rooms are just too small to accomodate the drummers. Hate to say this, but it's either them or us.

Last night!

The party at Anon Salon last night was great. My only complaint was that they had the best music from about 12-3 in the smaller room where there was no air circulating and it kept getting progressively hotter and hotter. At one point I thought it was like the sauna effect where you get hot (or at least this is the way I do sauna's) and then get out and then go back in but you can only be in there for a shorter amount of time because your core body temperature is still high. And since we weren't rolling and it was getting late I was about to call it a night when we went back out and Vijay was spinning and she was the best of the night. I would have stayed for Ethan too but we were too tired. Still a great night, all in all.

Butt smokers

I feel Anon Salons are some of the most enlightening parties because of the amazing crowd until they lock off the roof and everyone lights up ciggarettes INSIDE! Just when everyone has reached their peak of sweaty tribal dancing euphoria we are engulfed by nasty ciggarette smoke! If you want to break up the party and get everyone out the door immediately than sure, that is one technique but it sure puts a damper on an otherwise perfect party. Please don't smoke inside butt smokers!!! California is enlightened enough to know that smoking indoors is harmful to everyone and Some of us are allergic. Show respect and share the air.
