Back 2 School

topic posted Thu, July 6, 2006 - 7:09 PM by  Eylon
Hi,

I am looking for recommendations of Anthropology of Religion programs in the west coast that have some sort of in house expertise of hindusim, bhakti and new religious movements / new age / western esotericism. Somewhere where I can eventually write something about American Kirtan would be great.

Thanks!

You might want to check out the California Institute of Integral Studies. I think you'll find what you need there. ciis.edu/

CIIS is a great reccommendation, but you should know somereligious studies programs are based inside of Anthro departments (I know CSU San Jose's is) so have an anthro bent to them.

Also look into the New College of California,

    and of course, Berzerkeley

but CIIS- yes. I attended the Society for the Anthropology of Consciousness conference a few years in a row, and many of the presenters were from CIIS. Actually, I'd check the SAC site sacaaa.org/ and look for papers that interest you and see if you can find a pattern for where those professors are...

There's also the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto. Also, take alook at the Sophia Center at Holy Names University.

I guess one's survival at such places depends on how 'granola' one already is!

Thanks for all your replies. It seems that for the time being I am to remain on the amateur scholar side of the spectrum. I just keep cringing when looking at university websites and remembering all the uninteresting stuff on the way to the goodies and the academic politics and all the things that been keeping me away. Starting my own business instead ;-)
