This is everything I didn't say in my original post, so add this to your current knowledge on the topic. =)
Let me start off by explaining who Joss Whedon is, for those of you who don't know and are missing out on a huge part of pop culture. Maybe you've seen some of his work, and just didn't know it. The 3 TV shows he is most well known for are Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly. He's also written episodes for Roseanne and helped write the screenplay for Toy Story. Betcha didn't know that, huh? His movie adaptation of the cancelled Firefly show, Serenity, also had a giant fan base. The fans are what it's all about when it comes to Joss Whedon...he's got 3 different comic series out right now that are continuations of Buffy, Angel and Serenity/Firefly.
Now comes the time for me to explain what most of the above works are.
Buffy is a show that ran for 7 seasons (the 8th is currently being written into comic book form) about a vampire slayer...go figure. Season one establishes the basis of the show. Buffy is a sophomore in high school who moved from her old school after burning the gym down because of a vampire invasion. (Tidbit: What happened at her old school is what the movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer with Kristy Swanson is about). Come season 7, Buffy's gained and let go of many friends, gone through dozens of potential apocalypses, and has to decide where her life's gonna go from there.
Angel is a spin-off of Buffy. The title is based on the character named Angel (again, go figure) who appeared in the first season of Buffy. He's a vampire with a soul, dated Buffy, and in season 3 of Buffy decided it'd be better if they weren't together anymore, so he moved to L.A. to fight evil on his own. In Angel, evil takes the form of the law firm Wolfram & Hart. Pretty much the same as Buffy as far as the basics go, but it has its own style.
Firefly has absolutely nothing to do with Buffy or Angel, except for a few actors. The one and only season starts with a flashback of a war that took place some years ago between the resistance, or Brown Coats, and the Alliance. The Alliance wins, which is established when the show flashes forward to current time to show the main character, Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds, and his crew upon the ship Serenity (Firefly is the type of spaceship it is). Mal and his crew earn money dishonestly, by taking jobs from other people, working behind the Alliance's back. One fine day, or later in the first episode, a doctor buys a ride from Mal. Turns out he's got his sister with him, too, and she seems a tad insane. Anyway, the underlying storyline is of Simon (ze doctor) and his sister River, why they're on the run, and how Mal and his crew are helping them. And why River's seemingly insane. Each episode is just that and some kick ass Brown Coat fun.
Joss Whedon is currently working on a new TV series called Dollhouse about programmable machines. Kind of like Terminator, but with each mission the robot-like people go on, they develop emotions and memories. These emotions and memories are erased each time their mission is completed, but one machine somehow begins to retain them anyway. Not much info. on it yet, but it stars Eliza Dushku who played Faith in Buffy, and Tru in another series called Tru Calling.
Hope this long, but necessary explanation helps you understand, and fuels your desire to enter the Whedonverse!
