goin' solar!

... and i'm quite excited! The contractor is showing up this Wednesday, to figure out the best place to put the panels, determine if my electrical system needs any upgrades before proceeding further, etc. I'm all jazzed and stuff!

I'm unabashedly pro-nuclear (it is _far_ greener than fossil fuels and the waste issue has been blown way out of proportion), but I can't 'choose' a nuclear power solution for my home; fortunately, I live in a very sunny area, have lots of roof space that isn't shaded very much, and i've been saving for a few years, so solar is one option that I _can_ choose. I've been preparing for a year or so -- replacing high-wattage devices with similarly useful low-wattage devices (goodbye Power Mac G5, hello Mac Mini), replacing old bulbs with their LED equivalents, etc.

I'm endeavoring to have the complete installation functional by September or October. There is a fair amount of administrivia that I have to go through (permits, inspections before and after, etc.), but I think it will be worth it. Yay!

Regards,

John

Well, I disagree with you on nuclear, but I respect your point of view, and it certainly belongs in any discussion of what technologies are appropriate.

As you have chosen to go solar, though, I would invite you (as the moderator thereof) to join the Renewable Energy and Solar Power tribe ( tribes.tribe.net/altenergy ) and tell us about what you encounter along the way. (If you want, you can crosspost here, also).
