Here is a pic of one of Googles Streetview vehicles rolling around somewhere in asia presumably. Does anyone here know what the 3 Velodyne LIDAR units on the mast are for? They are only scanning a single axis and these are not high speed nor high resolution so I'm wondering purpose they serve.
I'm guessing that is a microwave antenna on the rear of the mast. Seems like a small car to house everything (not to mention I see no supplemental A/C for the computers), so I'm guessing there is a chase vehicle that hangs back and gets the data streamed to it.

Re: Google Streetview question
Mon, January 26, 2009 - 3:38 AMIs it possible that the LIDARs are being used to fine-tune the accuracy of the car's position by providing a second set of measures of the car's movement? It might function both as a backup and a finer-grained supplement to the GPS.
