this is a clip from a movie that was made about Qabbani. The actor is not him but I think, he is playing the young Qabbani, and the woman in the audience must be his love. Maybe someone could tell us what he is reading?

Re: Qabbani with sound
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 6:12 PMImportant- It not possible to do justice to a poem, certainly not one which is by a great poet like Nizar Qabbani- Ive tried to do my best but sadly it has lost some of its spirit- the 'feel',the intensity, the emotional impact..
----this is a quick translation(will finetune it tomorrow for errors) gotta sleep now ;)
I HATE HER
I hate her..
and i desire her company
and i... Love my hatred of her
I Love this deviousness in her eyes
and her perjury if she falsifies her speech
and i glimpse the lie in her mouth, circling, imposing it's shadow
An eye! ..like the eye of a wolf, deceitful
the swarming lies of passion orbited her
...the Devil had resided in her sight
and her lust has extinguished her mind
I doubt my doubt if she beckons! ..weeping, laying her wretchedness
For if i take pity on her she will gloat
and laughingly she will drag her tail
If she embraces me she crushes my ribs
and empties on my mouth her harshness
My bitternes loves her
and ive longed, if i could encircle her, kill her!

Re: Qabbani with sound
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 8:12 PMGod, this one sounds scary. And cruel, too, "laying her wretchedness at my feet". Is this popular among men to regard a woman like that, and even write a poem about it? If my love wrote and sent me something like that, that wouild be the last straw !
Now, to get backto what Nuria has written, this is why we are so fortunate to have several Arabic members in this tribe, I hope you will explain this one to us, because understanding the cultural background might make it a lot easier for a Eurpean woman to accept a poem like this one. -

Re: Qabbani with sound
Sat, February 9, 2008 - 12:58 PMWell Astrid its yes and no!....It is scary and cruel-but the other wayround! I believe its about a woman whom he loves immensely but who also happens to be extremely manipulative and sly!
I think its a 'fatal attraction' - Nizar knows her game but cannot resist her anyway.
She is "laying her wretchedness at my feet" inorder to fool/trick Nizar (its a show)
BTW- the sentence "laying her wretchedness at my feet" is partially missing! dont know why! (have a look!) -

Re: Qabbani with sound
Sat, February 9, 2008 - 8:18 PMIf everything he says it objective, yes. But remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and if he does not trust her and sees her like this, it may also be his problem, not hers... Note that I asked above: Is it popular among men to regard a woman lke this?
Plenty of men are scared of women and they see all kinds of ghosts where there are none but their own. In the middle ages in Germany they used to burn women at the stake for being in a pact with the devil. -

We men ALWAYS have problems when dealing with pretty women! -the mind (logic/common sense) says one thing to us but the heart commands us to do another! if i talk anymore about this il sound like Freud! ha ha ha h h hah ;)
No its not popular amongst men to regard women like that- its not common to use words like 'wolf ' or 'devil' as a describtion of the fairer sex! -
