So it's two in the morning and i realized that i don't know much about any of you guys... so I came up with a few random questions. You can answer as many as you want, but you have to answer at least three.

1. How long have you been dancing?
2. What do you like your bd clothes make you feel like when you dance in them?
3. What’s your one best/favorite move that you love to do?
4. Would you mind sharing a 4-8 count mini-combo with that move with us?
5. What’s your worst/most hated move?
6. Is there a quirky thing that you battle against (e.g. chicken arms, look at floor, drool, etc..) when you dance?
7. Share something weird about you.
8. What’s your fave bellydance cd? What's your fave non-bd cd?
9. What was the last workshop you attended and/or whose workshop would you love to take?
10. What do you want to ask other tribe members or myself?

I'll answer mine tomorrow after some sleep :) but feel free to post!

    Hmmm, OK, I'll bite:
    1. just over a year
    2. sexay! and comfortable of course
    3. hmmm, that's a hard one, I love what Juli Lively call's kaliedoscope. It's not a move per say, but a transition, where I play upon what the other person is doing. Its very organic and beautiful and creative. ::sigh::
    4. ha ha, hmm well that makes it a little hard. Let's see, ok, in a duet she's following me doing let's say slow mayas and snake arms. I come to center with arms still outstretched to sides. I then bring them straight in front of me (as if I am reaching out for the audience) while at the same time bending forward from the waist. This is where you can flirt with the audience a bit. meanwhile, Julie know's I always do that when I'm about to transition, so she does a similar move behind me where she reaches out with one arm to her right and bend at waist. Ok, making this short we basically play off each other to transition leaders and it helps to make it look smooth and not like "OK, we're changing places now!"
    5. Hmmm, I seem to be having troubles with spins. My feet feel like they're stuck to the floor. Ewww
    6. Crazy hand! But I do look at the floor too much. Shy....
    7. Something weird? I always have to have a napkin around my drinks, esp. in clubs. Obsessive about it.
    8. Bellydance CD? I don't think I really listen to bellydance music, heh heh. But that would have to be the Strange Flesh compilation. Non BD? Why Combichrist of course! ;-)
    9. Last workshop? I think that was Frederique's Charm Arm workshop. Looking forward to taking Rachel Brice's workshop at Tribal Cafe this August.
    10. What to ask??? LOL, won't you come dance with me?????? ;-)

Ok I can answer a few...
How long have I been dancing? About 6 years
How do I want my costumes to make me feel...thats easy ...SEXY and well put together.
      My favorite move...a maya
      My trouble move...shimmy walk
My favorite bd cd....hmmm...not sure I have a favorite, although I was recently introduced to Strange Flesh and I love it.
My favorite non dance cd.....Dead Can Dance....although I have dreams of dancing to it in the future.
      Last workshop....Rachel Brice....*squeals*

    Ah… Rachel Brice… Frickin jealous!!
    Okay, so here’s mine:

    1. I’ve been dancing for a year and a half.
    2. I like them to make me feel sexy and invincible.
    3. Undulations down to up
    4. ….I’m tired!
    5. Doing something while going down to the floor. I see dancers doing mayas and kneeling slowly down and I feel like like a dirty old lady, “Damn! Check out those knees!!”
    6. It’s something that I call Tribal-rex or the “T-rex”. You know how rachel brice does her tribal arms all nice and pretty down by her sides, elbows in like a 90 degree angle? Well, when I’m nervous the upper arm stays the same, but my forearms migrate to my chest, ending up in the T-rex position. T-rex tribal with pretty hands. (Put your arms down, I know you’re doing it!)
    7. The thing about weird things is that you think it’s perfectly normal and its everyone else tat thinks its weird. Hmm… when I get nervous, like before a test or something, I get into this mode that is a mixture between bellydance mode and musical theater mode. Yeah, five minutes before the last organic chemistry test I broke out into Cabaret with jazz hands and a full shimmy.
    8. Fave cd? There are lots I love, but I only have to skip one song in the BDSS 3 (I can’t stand the kissing song. *shudders*. I totally want to get strange Flesh, though!! Fave non-bd CD? NIN Zero is my newest acquisition and it hasn’t left my CD player since we bought it. There are tons. It depends on my listening mood or my dancing mood.
    9. Last workshop was tribal fest in Kansas City with ARIELLAH, Layla bint Ali, and the wonderful Elizabeth Osteen and Chris chambers from tribe Marrakech. Whose do I wanna go to? RB’s, of course!
    10. Why is it that when you want to post something, tribe doesn’t work?

    1. (how long i've been dancing) about 4 years, i think...
    2. (my bdance clothes have to be...) comfortable! i do cabaret 50% of the time and well... comfortable cabaret costumes are hard to come by!
    3. (fav. move) 3/4 glute shimmies layered over a slow regular shimmy
    4. (combo) if i could think of a combo that fast, i would gladly share it!
    5. (least fav. move) choochoo shimmies because my calf muscles are weak!
    6. (my issues) i have an issue finishing moves, as my brain is always trying to jump ahead to the next section of music
    7. (why i'm weird) i work as a software developer and i listen to crazy dark music
    8. fav bdance-CD: aziza raqs (i love the classics, and these are such good arrangments) non-bdance-CD: Theatre of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness They Fear (such great cheese!!!!)
    9. i went to a morocco workshop yesterday! must...have...more...workshops....

    1. How long have you been dancing?

as long as i can remember... oooh, you mean belly dancing... i taught myself how to do hip isolations in high school, but then didn't have the time/money/access to study it formally until about 8 yrs ago while living in tucson. i've been on and off with it ever since. (it seems like every time i find a teacher i really like one of us moves)

recently i've been much more focused on firedance

    2. What do you like your bd clothes make you feel like when you dance in them?

    comfy and confident

    3. What’s your one best/favorite move that you love to do?

so in an attempt to answer this i found a pretty cool resource - The Belly Dance Movements Thesaurus www.middleeasterndance.homestead.com/BDThesaurus.html

i don't know - i pretty much love all hip work, and also hand articulation

    4. Would you mind sharing a 4-8 count mini-combo with that move with us?

choreography is one of the things i need to get more versed at.

    5. What’s your worst/most hated move?

no hated moves, just those i am either particularly challenged by and those i have yet to learn thoroughly.

    challenged by belly rolls
need to learn more about floorwork and props (veils, zills, scimtars, etc)

    6. Is there a quirky thing that you battle against (e.g. chicken arms, look at floor, drool, etc..) when you dance?

i'd like to think it happens less so when i've actually performed (because there's an actual audience to play to), but while rehearsing, i make the goofiest 'concentration' faces

    7. Share something weird about you.

    8. What’s your fave bellydance cd?

i find certain dead can dance tracks utterly amazing

    What's your fave non-bd cd?

how could i possibly pick just one! my music tastes are all over the place. but just for this exercise i will narrow it down by "best overall composition as a complete album" - in which case In An Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel takes the cake.

    9. What was the last workshop you attended and/or whose workshop would you love to take?

Persian Dance with Laurel Victorian Grey

    10. What do you want to ask other tribe members or myself?

hmmm... how, if at all, has belly dance changed your view of yourself and/or the world and/or the divine?

Changed my view of the world? Hmm Leahtrix, not sure if it has done that but when I am dancing I forget about all of my troubles. Heh heh, at least I can relax till the end of the workout, eh?

Bellydance has certainly changed the view about myself.
I used to feel like the ugly duckling. The girl that wasn’t cool enough, pretty enough, sexy enough…
I have definitely gained more self-confidence in that aspect. I am a lot more outgoing, I start conversations now with strangers, I’m getting better at talking to people, I see myself as beautiful, and I feel beautiful when I dance. The dance is something I know and have mastered to some degree…it makes me feel good that my body can do things that most people never thought their bodies could do. It’s always nice when some asks me if I can bellydance and asks to see something, and I totally blow their minds by doing something like a walking ¾ glute shimmy with snake arms, chest circles ½ time, and undulations down to up ¼ time. And then breaking down all the movements for them. (“Yeah, bitch! It’s not all ‘I love Genie’ while parading around w/ a veil. Think you can do this for Halloween? Think again, sweetheart!”) LOL! I know we all feel like that to some degree. ;)
I have gained confidence in myself, in my beauty, in my body, in my athletic ability, in my physique, in my ability to express, command attention, and change someone’s perspective about what this “exotic, mysterious and tabboo” dance form is all about.
And that’s just for what dancing itself has done for myself and my body. I have also gained a much, much deeper appreciation for middle eastern cultures and anything else that is considered fringe or taboo, for that matter… I have –actually- learned to research a culture, a study, a lifestyle, an art form before making any inferences about it.
Dancing has changed my life. I am less than a year away from graduating with my bachelor’s degree and I know that I don’t want to do whatever it is that I was wanting to do with that degree. I know that I want to dance, sew, design, and create. It is what makes me the happiest, after all. I am a better person because of bellydance. And I want to share that happiness with my sisters in dance and with the rest of the world.
So how’s that for a rant?

Alright! In an attempt to revive this post, here’s my updated one.

    1. Some time. :P Not tellin ya.
    2. I like for my BD clothes to make me feel invincible and sexy. I like them to add to my performance both visually and energetically. I want to be able to draw energy from what I’m wearing and be able to use it while performing.
    3. Any undulation with a lock at the end. Like a belly roll with hip locks, or an arm undulation to the audience, with my eyes locking on someone…
    4. Okay, this is totally taken from Ariellah, but I’m ~totally~ diggin’ it right now. You start in awesome BD position. 1-You scoop your right shoulder over and down to the left as you lean a little bit. 2- Bring your shoulder back up, completing the scoop, and ending up at 45 deg angle to left. 3-4 – undulate up to down. 5-6 one or two hip circles or omis. 7-8 – undulate down to up. Repeat to right side.
    5. Snake arms. I love ‘em. They look awesome. But … I’m working on increasing my arm strength…they definitely could be better.
    6. I just battle against unpreparedness. I’m a procrastinator, so I rarely have my choreography ready, If done at all. I’m working hard on fixing that, though.
    7. I eat everything with lemon juice and hot sauce. Potato chips, cucumbers, salad (lemon juice and salt, maybe chili powder), soups, stir frys (they have to have lemon juice and at least some jalapenos)… all sorts of things…
    8. Fave bd cd… right now I’ve been listening to beats antique, strange flesh, knossos, and maduro a lot lately. BDSS3 is always great (still) for my cabaret drils n dancing.
Fave non bd cd? Assemblage 23 and Collide lately, definitely. And Modulate. I want to choreograph the “Skullfuck you!” song. I’d only be able to perform it at the goth club here, but it’s awesome, lol.
    9. ARIELLAH!!! We had her over for a workshop on Oct 13th and 14th. Ohh…the gothy goodness…
I’m also looking forward to Moria in Kirksville on Feb 9th (I think?) It’s gonna be KILLER!
    10. “Tell me your secrets , Frida…”…I mean, “…ladies…”

And -$5 off an order if you can tell me:
    a. What movie the quote is from
    b. WHERE and WHAT is happening in the movie when the quote is said.
PM me, though. Wouldn’t want to ruin the fun for everyone ;)

    ~Daniela/Aracenia

    P.S.
I wanna hear from the new members!!

Hi-yah' everyone! This is a fun thread, so here's my answers:
      1. 3 years, I started dancing on my birthday; so I can keep track really easy
      2. I feel like the other darker, more wild part of myself.
      3. I love to shimmy!
      4. This is going to be long, but I recently learned Mardi's "kitty push" move. When your shimmying (I can't spell!) you turn to the side and take little steps. If you started by facing to the left, you shimmy and take a small step forward with your left foot then the same on the right. While you're doing this the left arm would be bent at the elbow to your face with your right arm out and you gentely push your left and right hand, while coordinating to your feet. A crazy explanation! You can see it on youtube, search for Rachel and Mardi at Raks Britannia.
      5. Well, I really don't hate anything, but I have trouble with barrel turns!
      6. Let's see, I always need to work on posture, arms, slowing down a bit, and relaxing! I'm a bit of a perfectionist, can you tell?
      7. I love to study everything Ancient Egyptian! And I study serial killers, I'm into forensic psychology and hope to become an independent profiler and save some lives. Yeah, I know it's weird.
      8. I just bought some of the tracks from the Le Serpent Rouge cd and I love it! For non-dance, PJ Harvey's "To Bring You My Love".
      9. I would love to take workshops from any of the Indigo girls, Sammy Hasthorpe, Moria, Kami, Unmata, Urban Tribal Dance Co., Ultra Gypsy, Solstice, and that's all I can think of for the moment!
      10. ummmmmm..........I can't think of anything right now.................

Yeah, your #9 is like my christmas wishlist of workshops..
That kitty push is really sassy. I love it!
Forensic psychology? That's really interesting :) Was there something in particular that inspired you that made you want to go into this field?
        • Re: Something about yourself...

          Sun, October 28, 2007 - 8:00 PM
Nope, I've always wanted to know what people were thinking. I was just particularly interested in criminals because they are kind of like gruesome puzzles.......weird I know.................then I found out that it was a job and bingo! But, my particular motivation is the victims and they're families, which is where a little known fact comes into play. Many of the profiling types have to see crime from both points of view, the criminal and the victim, which is rough, but motivating.
