Pause the Styrofoam Recycling Revolution!!!

Hey ya'll!

I just received word from Roger that the Styrofoam revolution is on pause. Also... a few corrections to my previous post on Recycling Styrofoam via Roger's project. The following is what he says:

"I have more than enough Styrofoam for now until I get the whole recycling and utilization process developed. At this time it is a one person operation working at home with personal development funds. Folks could either store it until i can get the process going or put it back into the waste stream as usual.

Also, the Bayside post office was kind enough to have the flyer on a counter but they are not collecting Styrofoam and neither is the Arcata post office. Please do not have folks leave it at either location."

Sorry for the misinformation about drop off locations.

2007 Camp planning!!!! It's gonna be September before we know it!

Well folk, it's that time of year again- the time when people like us get all overly involved in planning this year's Love Camp in order to insure an even better camp than we had last year (as if that were possible)!!!!

I was speaking with Kymber yesterday, and we've sorta started kicking around the idea of moving our camp closer to the heart of things (such as under the trees near the Forest Stage, near where Pamela's camp was last year). There's three main reasons we were entertaining this idea- 1) Kymber is going to be carrying her child with her whenever she must walk to or from camp this year, 2) I have a knee that seriously needs replacing and another that needs surgery, and it's a pain in the ass to walk all that distance back and forth several times a day, and 3) many of our friends camp closer in, resulting in lots of people who don't want to walk out alone into the vast wilderness that is the parking lot when they wish to come visit for a nice cup of Planet Chai. Last year, I was wearing braces on both knees and walking with a cane, and managed to do so without much problem, but it sure would be nicer if camp were centrally located between the music, food, showers, river, and whatnot.

This is not to suggest that we don't understand the value of our current camp location- it's easy to find, it's isolated from the herds, and most importantly, it's been where people know to come look for us.

Since those of us who set up camp are usually on-site early enough to arrange whatever area we would like, I would like to examine whether or not it would be awkward to secure an area closer in, which is large enough to include the NoHum Earthdancers who camp with us.

What do the rest of you think about this idea?

Bees at Earthdance....

From what I understand there is a bee crew that kills bees on the hog farm prior to Earthdance to protect people from getting stung. I personally wrote Earthdance in hopes to spread awareness on this matter.

I was watching one little lone bee working hard in my yard and he reminded me of this issue.

Does anyone have ideas on other ways to handle the bees on the property without killing them? Maybe this year it won't be a "problem" :(
Lets hope and assume that the bee population on the Hog Farm is plentiful, and anyone that has suggestions put them out there and we can send a list of possible solutions to them:)

This year's Earthdance will go down as the best festival experience I've ever had. You all helped make our camp- our kitchen, our lounge, our patio, even our 4AM smoke in the Lounge- the most wonderful three day music festival I could have imagined. This year's camp was even better than last year's camp, which we all seemed to agree was the "best camp ever".

The ONLY thing that could have made it better would have been to have our camp closer to the main stream of things- like in the area of the Arlo Forest Stage or maybe the Lotus Temple (since walking half a mile to the stages, the river, food and showers, and half a mile back each way is problematic both in terms of my physical limitations and time itself). Of course, if we had a jaccuzzi, things might have been "better", but that's not practical..... yet. ;-)

Kymber, please hang onto the clamps until we can figure out some time for me to pick them up. The commode is yours, if you want it.

Again, thank you ALL. I love you for being you, and for making me feel so welcome and part of the Family.

Apparently, at AREA 101, about ten miles north of the site, there'll be a Thursday night "pre-festival" with free camping for Earthdance goers. I know there's stuff out there on the web about it, and there's local bands advertizing it as well. Maybe someone else has more info......

Anyway, he will have in place our bedroom, (the green house shaped room w/red trim) and a beige EZ up w/brown trim. So, look out for this, and him, and you found it! (He does not have the tapestries though, so the EZ up will not have walls to recognize us by yet.....

Anyway, thought I would let anyone know who might want to know....(To find us, and not to move us!! tee hee...;-) For it is not the wrong party in our world!

camp directions

OK, this is kinda vague, but here goes....

From the 101:

After the ticket entrance, I think there is a parking lot entrance on the right.
Go in, there will be porta-potties on the left.
Go forward, the path curves left, and there is a grove on the right,
immediately after volunteer camping (which has an orange net fence.)
That grove is us. (Goddess willing) :)
We'll have up 2 Japanese fish (blue and green), and Buddhist themed art.

From the event:

If your leaving through main event path,
go under archway that usually has the inflated lotus,
go straight past the Temple of Electronica, and continue down that path.
Eventually, there will be groves of trees on the left.
Eventually, the path forks to the left along the groves. Follow that left fork.
We are immediately after volunteer camping (which has an orange net fence.)
That grove is us. (Goddess willing) :)

So here's the deal...
Brian and I got our "jobs," and were invited to be down on Thurs.
Soooo....we're trying to get there as early as possible to get our canopy and decor up, and, er, mark our territory.
Elise said I can use her prayer flags, so that is part of how we'll mark it off.

Also, I'd love to collect ppl's TENTS, and just lay them down. As MANY tents as possible. If ppl wanna arrange to get me their tents by Wed (but after the weekend) msg. me or call me.

Please LABEL your tent or tent bag in an obvious manner (like write on masking tape) so there won't be any confusion with similar tents. When you get there, everyone can move around as they please.

Please pass this msg. on to others you know are camping with us, that may not be on tribe often.

New structure for camp

I would LOVE to make a new "livingroom" for camp. I have a wonderful idea. But, of course, it will take some collaboration - and some materials. I think it best made of thin wood, like the structures created for our collective burns we have here.....thin wood....

Anyway, I would like to build an octagon structure, with very detailed "awnings" I think they would be called....carved of the wood, to look very "Palace" like.

Then we need to get some fancy material, lace and frilly things, to make the curtains. I would like for there to be a moon viewer in the middle of the roof.

So, we need to figure out who loves to work with cutting wood, who can donate some, and who has tools. I just have the ideas, and the ability to coordinate things, I think!

I think we can use an existing "easyup" and modify it.

Any takers? thoughts? ideas?

New tribe for Outdoor Educators

I started a new tribe for Outdoor, Experiential, Environmental, and/or Adventure Educators. A place to share ideas and resources so we can do what we do even better. Anyone who works to get people outdoors and learning is invited. Or anyone who thinks this is a something they would like to do.

I am currently a Wilderness Instructor for Outward Bound Discovery. I have also worked for the Sierra Club, Student Conservation Association, and Sound Experience. I would love to connect with others from these organizations, but would also love to hear from some of you who have worked for others, so we can cross-pollinate (woo-hoo! lol).

That is what my Grandpa taught us to call the camping "bathroom" when I was younger. It meant we were going to go poop, and it was less embarassing to say, going to visit Toliver, or where is Toliver, I need him?

So, who would like to help create our community Toliver?

I felt pretty bad this year, being the only one with my own private bathroom. This year I would like to share the comfort.

So we can go as high or low tech as we feel comfortable with. As a child, Toliver was an old toilet seat atop a folding chair to a card table, out in the woods, on top of a hole.

We could be more sophisticated, or less. I have used a plastic cup for years, so anything works for me, as long as it is clean!

We just have to all come to the agreement that we will all deal with our own shit.....literally!
