Area 2257 takes its name from Section 2257, a United States law that exists (among other reasons) to make sure that people, especially minors, aren't exposed to overly sexualized images (pornography) against their will. This is a good thing, though the government is now using and stretching that law into all kinds of odd areas, including consensual and private events and web sites.

Burning Man has become concerned that they will get in trouble, with the growth of the festival and the increase in the number of kids at the event. Area 2257 is an adult-only theme village, providing a safe environment for sexual self-expression on the playa.
