Subject: [Ratedthemecamps-announce] Adult Content in Theme Camps
Dear Theme Camps,
This is the only communication that will be sent out on this list.
This letter is being sent to a broad group of theme camps because you
indicted on our questionnaire that you will have subject matter that
is, could be construed to be, or could lend itself to acts that are
sexual in nature. Such activities could have consequences for you as
the theme camp organizer, and us as the infrastructure for Burning
Man.
Some of you may be thinking that you do not fit into this category.
You may be correct, but something as simple as a massage table left
unattended might present a different opportunity for someone less
scrupulous than you. Compromised states of consciousness can mitigate
good judgment. Misunderstandings can easily occur and cause severe
ramifications for those involved, including the person/people hosting
that theme camp and the Burning Man Project. The worst-case scenario
would be sexual harassment or rape.
The laws in Nevada regarding sexual activity and minors are quite
explicit. Children may not be exposed to sexual behavior and public
sex acts are not permissible. Local Law Enforcement will be looking
to see that all adult-only activities are completely shielded from
public view. They are prepared to fine camps, or worse, if they find
otherwise. They also require that theme camps post a "monitor" or
"lookout" outside the entrance of sexually explicit camps to steer
anyone under the age of 18 away. As always, we have placed any
family oriented camps between 5:00 and 5:30.
Having said all of this, it should be noted that law enforcement
officials have repeatedly assured us that, as in previous years,
simple nudity is not an issue.
Burning Man has always been and is still radically inclusive.
Everyone is welcome. Many people's lives are changed by this one
principle alone. With this in mind, the responsibility for dealing
with unacceptable behavior falls upon the shoulders of participants
and the Burning Man Project alike. Our message has always been that
everyone is responsible for taking care of himself or herself and the
immediate community should handle problem situations when they are
able. Actively manage your camps, take full responsibility for your
actions, and please report any problems that occur. Black Rock
Rangers should be called immediately if an unwanted situation
develops beyond your control. Our Black Rock Rangers are volunteers
and are a part of our community. There are Black Rock Rangers that
are experienced in handling these sorts of incidents and they will be
available to assist you.
Make awareness and safety part of your planning.
Thank you!
