I am so very pleased and honoured to present to you a 3 day intensive retreat with Rachel Brice and Ariellah (ME!)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our vision for this retreat is for you to completely and utterly immerse yourself in dance and truly get into your body and mind and move your practice forward by leaps, bounds and volumes...yoga and belly dance for 6 hours or more a day with both Rachel and myself.

EVENT DESCRIPTION: Imagine yourself immersed in dance, surrounded by the beauty of the California Gold Country. You wake each morning to a beautiful view and breakfast on a veranda overlooking lush countryside and vineyards. Your days are leisurely paced with morning and afternoon classes, picnic lunches on the grounds with a question/answer time with the instructors and plenty of time for relaxation. Your nights are filled with a Friday night special dinner with the instructor’s at a local Bed and Breakfast with a world renowned chef and on Saturday a performance by Ariellah, Rachel and guests at Black Bart’s Theater in nearby Murphys. This is a once in a lifetime experience that is not to be missed!

ACCOMODATIONS: The accommodations will be at the Querencia Bed and Breakfast (http://www.querencia.ws/). “The Q” is located in the middle of 40 acres on a remote ridge top in the heart of California’s Gold Country, with views of mountains, vineyards, and countryside in all directions. The fenced garden area contains a small vineyard, a vegetable, herb, and flower garden, and a fish pond. Three oaks are joined by shade cloth to make an outdoor room and the garden has plenty of places to eat a meal, read a paper or share a bottle of wine. Outside the fenced garden there are roads and paths to explore, with places for picnics and even a private outdoor shower with its own wilderness view that is rustic, but not primitive. Lodging, including breakfast, evening wine and appetizers, are included in both the platinum and gold packages that are being offered. “The Q” has well appointed accommodations with luxury embellished rooms and private baths. “The Q” has four rooms for occupancy during this event. This package also includes one show ticket and the special dinner with the instructors. There are two rooms available at this price and both rooms have private bathrooms and one king bed per room. Maximum occupancy per room is two people. There are two rooms available.*
Gold Package $800 (per person, double occupancy)
The gold packages include all classes (Dec. 5-7, 2008), meals (Friday lunch through Sunday lunch) and accommodations for check-in Friday and check-out Sunday. This package also includes one show ticket and the special dinner with the instructors. There are two rooms available at this price and both rooms have private bathrooms and one king bed per room. Maximum occupancy per room is two people. There are two rooms available.*
*The Q is available for Thursday night stay, but this price is not included in the above listed packages. Please contact The Q directly to book your Thursday night accommodations at (209) 728-9520.
Day Pass $200 (per day)

There are 17 days passes available for Friday through Sunday. Day passes include lunch and classes for one day only. Special for all three days of classes and lunches for $500.

SHOW TICKETS: Show tickets will be available for $15 before November 1, 2008 and will be $20 at the door the night of the performance on a first come basis. The show will be at the Murphys Black Bart Players Theater (580 S. Algiers St. Murphys, Ca 95247) on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008. Doors open at 7:30 P.M.

DEPOSIT: A $200 deposit will reserve your space at this event and is on a first come, first reserved basis. Total balance is due no later than November 1, 2008.

REFUND/CANCELLATION POLICY: Deposit is non-refundable, non-transferable. There are no other refunds offered for this event.

yoga music? (especially Ariellah, if you see this)

I really like the two songs used for the yoga sequence on the Contemporary Belly Dance and Yoga Conditioning DVD. I was wondering if anyone could suggest other music along those lines. Is the whole Stellamara CD similar? What about the Solace CD?

I love the fact that both of the songs are peaceful while still having energy.

My UNMATA Necklace was stolen in SF! Please help me!

Hi everyone.
On Sunday my car was broken into at Pride. I lost everything. My ipod, camera, new rollybag, my notebook, calendar, clothes, jewelry and...
my UNMATA necklace.
Everything else I can replace over time. But my UNMATA Necklace!!!!!!!
It was taken in San Francisco.
Here's what I'm thinking...This is a powerful piece of jewelry and it may show itself so I can find it. I figure I have a few hundred people on my side in the city that know the necklace or the symbol.
Please keep your eyes open and if you see one, it's mine. Offer to buy the necklace from whoever for whatever it costs and I will reimburse.
Please, I know she is trying to show up somewhere for me.

Doppelganger!

I am apparently the dancer who "looks like Ariellah."

I have heard this pretty nigh constantly since I started dancing four years ago. Ariellah was my first workshop ever, and when I brought the show DVD home, my mom watched her performance and said "You look alike." I have been mistaken for Ariellah at a couple of events. Mardi Love and I were the last two in a show lineup in Atlanta last year, and apparently she went over to the show organizers and asked "Who's the girl who looks like Ariellah?" I went to D.C. last weekend and talked to Maduro in my civies. He didn't recognize me until I gave him one of my business cards, and he said, "Oh, I know who you are. You're the girl who looks like Ariellah." Barbara Copeland says she's horrible with names, but remembers me because I look like Ariellah. I was negotiating a workshop today, and the organizer said she has a student who swears I'm Ariellah and can't be told otherwise.

Turnabout is fair play. There's a hippie/occult store in my small city that has posters of bellydancers in the front window, and most people in town think that the photo of Ariellah is me.

Luckily there is not a more lovely and awesome dancer that I would like to be mistaken for. We should capitalize on this sometime and do a piece together. We'd confuse everybody.

Here is a brief description:

I. Expressive arms, hands and movement
(with an emphasis on arms/hands/chest/belly)

II. Hair and Make up tip session

Learn the secrets to Ariellah's expressive arms. Her workshop is devoted to strengthening and beautifying the belly dancers arm, shoulder, hand, belly and chest work, as well as fluidity of movement. Stretching, strengthening and drilling techniques will be used to build a repertoire of arm, hand and other movements. Arms and hands are key to expressing one's music and love of dance. Students will be encouraged to stylize their own arm movements after drilling the basics. Some exercises are completed in groups to encourage use of arm.

The last hour to 45 minutes will be spent discussing stage make up and the tribal-dark fusion hair coiffures. Students will need to bring their own make up and hair pins, flowers, chopsticks and porcupine quills. (Some wire and flowers will be provided to learn how to create your own flower head piece.)

this thread was inspired by the last post "Music question."
If this is not appropriate, PLEASE feel free to delete, but since we all seem to love the music Ms. Ariellah uses, and are looking to expand our musical collections, I thought perhaps this could be helfpul.

There's this great little website called pandora.com, where you can type in the name of an artist or song (example: Die Form) and they will play songs and artists similar to the one you typed in! (Its free too.)

Black Shisha Belt

Okay, so I'm sure others have noticed that the lovely gothic lady we all know and love has a black shisha mirror belt. :-) It's pretty pretty and I wanna make one too! My question is this: Did you make the belt yourself (sewing on all the mirrors to material) or did you just buy a finished belt and dye it? If you did dye it, any special process to it?

I only ask since every shisha belt I see is some either outrageous color combination that won't go with any of my outfits or is a dull color from the wear that has been put upon it. ;-p

How do you do your practice journal...

I've always kept a notebook for dance but never really did a practice journal.
After Ariellah's workshop and her suggestion to keep one ,I started keeping one and working on the drills.
I wish I'd done this sooner. It really makes such a difference and it even helps me remember and work harder.
Her workshops are so inspiring, they should be mandatory : D

I got one of the small little 4"x3" marble notebooks from walmart , reduced my drill notes and laminated them so I could tape them in the front inside for easy reference and it's so small I can take it with me , and even squeeze in drills while out and busy. When it gets full I can take them out easy and swap the notes to another.
How does everyone else like to keep their practice journals and anys tips for them?

Ideas to get in shape... FAST?

Ok, so I've decided to take three lovely 2 and 3 hour tribal fusion workshops in May, all within the time span of 4 days (with a hafla performance in between to boot). Besides that, I'd love to be able to take more (intensive) workshops or series in the rest of the year without being able to walk afterwards... Maybe even thinking about Ariellah's workshops in England (Gothla UK) if I dare travel alone and all... But something like that for me would only be worthwhile, cost wise, since I'd have to pay for the plane ticket and all, if I would be able to take all her workshops instead of only one because my condition isn't all that (also it would be more fun to really dive into it and practice with Ariellah for a couple of DAYS :)

For the event in May I have exactly ten weeks to get in shape, and in general I just really want to dance and yoga more and take my energy and health to the next level.

At the moment I take one tribal class a week and do yoga a couple of times a week. Now I'm working towards one hour of yoga every morning, and also at least half an hour every evening, plus would love to work on choreography and drills for at least half an hour during the day (or perhaps after morning yoga). Besides that I'm thinking about taking 2 to 3 extra (belly)dance classes a week, and do an extra good job diet wise. Plus taking the bike instead of the bus to wherever I go. Of course, building it up wisely.

I'd love to hear about your fitness regime and get some fresh perspectives.
What do you do to get in shape fast and prepare for big upcoming events (safely)?

O, after reading the practice journal post, I used to do that, but will definitely pick it up again!

Okay, so the Ariellah website has gone through some changes and I must say I LOVE the opening picture that is used for the site! OMG! Being a lover of skulls/skeletons I have to say this is my FAV dancer site eva! It uses only a few strokes to make up the picture but man it is GORGEOUS in its simplicity! Save the Cow Palace

THE DICKENS FAIR AND THE COW PALACE

State Senator Leland Yee Ph.D., under pressure
from the Daly City Council, is proposing to
“surplus” the Cow Palace and sell it to Daly
City. Daly City will then sell most of the land
to condo developers and pocket the
profits. Letter writing WILL stop this. Senator
Yee has ONLY heard from Daly City. Let him know
you oppose selling the Cow Palace!!!

soon). This bill wrongly proposes to SELL the Cow Palace to Daly City!

We must defeat SB1527 or the Dickens Fair will likely die.
It would take years, if it’s even possible, to
relocate and resurrect the Dickens Fair.
Red Barn Productions has studied all the venues
that could physically host the Dickens Fair and
there are NO other places that currently
work. All are either too expensive, too small,
are unavailable between Thanksgiving and
Christmas OR require unaffordable retrofits in
order to be permitted for public assembly. So,
Save the Cow Palace and Save The Dickens Fair. It's that simple AND
serious.

Here's the scoop:

The Cow Palace has a perfectly good plan to meet
the needs of the local community and Daly City by
providing them 13 acres of its’ unused
land. Yes, rock concerts bring public problems,
according to Daly City, but they also bring
public $$$ to the local community. Senator Yee's
Legislation SB1527 is doubly wrong. It proposes
we, as California State Citizens, sell OUR Cow
Palace to Daly City so they can bulldoze it and
profit by selling it to private developers. If
that isn't bad enough, SB1527 also deprives us of
our RIGHT to use a facility that WE own!!

This is like selling off a chunk of Golden Gate
Park because a nearby neighborhood proclaims
“unanimously” it needs more space for
development. It doesn't work that way. We get
to vote too...by writing letters and emails and
calling his office. Officials can't just decide
to take a public asset and sell it…unless it is
truly “surplus”. The Cow Palace is not
“surplus”. We must stop this proposed sell-off of our property.

Here's what you can do to stop SB1527 and SAVE THE COW PALACE:

#1 Act Quickly. Senator Yee may believe he is
serving the public, but he has only heard from
Daly City. Let’s give him the other 99% of the
picture before he gets any further down this road.

Write a Letter
Write to Senator Yee today. Quickly. Early
letters are more powerful. Send personal letters
to the address below the sample text at the
bottom of this notice. Get it in today’s mail, so
he receives it on Monday or Tuesday.

dollars into the local economy annually. These
revenues, generated by me and many thousands of
others who use the Cow Palace, also help pay for
police to patrol the area year-round as well as during big events.

Please reconsider SB1527. There is a better way
to help Daly City and Bayshore than destroying
the Cow Palace. I use it every year and plan to
continue to use it for many years to come. It is
not “surplus”; it is a vital community and cultural asset.

Refresh my memory on which shimmy..

Would someone please describe these for me so I can straighten out my notes hee hee
I'm over thinking it as usual ( and the harder I think and analyze stuff the worse I it gets)and I know so many shimmy variations and I can't remember which one these are... ugh
Alternating hip lifts with up on toes for shimmy on the up, level change or flat foot and ball makes the difference in up and down? Or 3/4 shimmy..
I hear shimmy and I automatically think 3/4 but I'm thinking it's the alternating one..

side winders

I'm working on one of Ariellah's lovely choreographies now and I'm really not sure I'm getting this. I think I just need a visual that I can watch a few times to help me break it down. I'd say I have the chest movement, but the arms are still sketchy. Anyone have a good youtube clip that would demonstrate a basic, cleanly done sidewinder? I've found several, but they seem to be variations and I think I just need to grasp the basics first.

Question for ARIELLAH

As a ''self-Xmas present'', I ordered HMC's Bellydance Underworld, and the 1st performance listed was yours to the song ''Black'' by The Shroud, I believe, a nice and darkly dramatic (where have I heard that phrase before) tune ya danced to so delightfully in the DVD. (Must hear this song, it kicks ass...SLOWLY, that is...)

What was the inspired tastes that pulled you to this song, and when dealing with the ''darkside'' of gothi/tribal/fusion bellydance, what does a song(s) have to accompany to draw a collective thumbs up to ears as eclectic as yours?

A few new spots in Sat's Ariellah workshop - Toronto

Due to a change in the set up of the workshop space, there are a few new spots available for the previously sold out Saturday Ariellah workshop on The Darker Side of Drilling. There are still Sunday spots (on Expressive Arms & Hands along with Chest & belly openers) so you could make a weekend of it. Learn some new things to add to your belly dance vocabulary!

Tickets are available at the door, or in advance until Friday, for Saturday night's Ariellah Darker Still Gala show. It's gonna rock the socks of St. Stephen's Church!!

something new...

first and foremost, I wish all of you a most extraordinary new year...
I look forward to this new year with the utmost eagerness and delight.

and secondly, I would like to share my excitement with all of you regarding my newly revamped website! I have been working incredibly hard on it for quite a while and it is finally complete!(many, many thanks to Bruce, who made all the wonderful fancy pants things happen! and thanks to Katie for bringing my vision to life, and thanks to Predslava for the most beautiful, inspirational new image/logo) I do hope you enjoy the new site. My website is now complete with music(which you can choose to turn off at the bottom of the screen of course), on line belly dance and yoga instruction, a history of belly dance, photos, video, fancy drop down menus, merchandise, inspirational web links, as well as information regarding classes, workshops and performances. I do hope you enjoy it!

and lastly, but definitely not least...
I am now artistic director of my own dance company, Deshret Dance Company! The dancers in the troupe have extensive dance backgrounds and a love of the dance. I have been training and rehearsing with these talented dancers since about February 2007 and we debuted our first piece this past December...It was a wonderful experience and we are rearing and ready to go for many more performances in 2008! We will perform in San Francisco later this month and will perform in southern California in February for Gothla US. We hope to see you at some of our shows! We have a website as well, however I have only put up one page thus far, as a placeholder...I will delve into creating that website soon! For now: www.deshretdance.com
