* performer submission deadline has past, the shows are now being crafted....line up announcement in a few weeks.

* a hoop class with belly dance flair has been added....

* vendor invitations have gone out, confirmed merchants will be announced soon....

* there are a few folks who bought classes and now cannot attend- they are RESELLING their classes on our tribe - http://UrbanGypsy.tribe.net many of the classes for sale are for classes that SOLD OUT long ago - so keep an eye peeled for the classes you only thought you couldn't get into.... and you'll be helping a fellow dancer at the same time! ~ SCHEDULE ~

9:30am - Studio opens for check in

10:00am - 11:30am - Zills: The Fusion of Rhythm and Movement Part I:
Foundations of Zilling - 90 minutes
Taught by Deshret principal dancer, Lisa

Please join us for the first installation in our 3-part series dedicated to the art of zilling. This first workshop will focus on the history of zills, cymbal techniques and tones, and coordinating basic dance movement with 6 different zill patterns. We will explore how these patterns fit within the rhythms of popular fusion song selections, as well as a few of the more widely known Arabic classics. You will leave this workshop armed with the tools to begin your home practice. This home practice will prepare you for parts II & III of our zill series, where we will learn additional patterns, more advanced footwork, and a challenging fusion choreography.

11:30am - 12:00pm - Break for Lunch

12:00pm - 1:30pm - Sultry and Serpentine - 90 minutes
Taught by Deshret principal dancer, Predslava

This workshop will focus on the slinky, snakey, fluid side of Dark Fusion belly dance. We will deepen our focus on posture, muscular control, and safe extension; Drill slow controlled movements including sidewinders, undulations, and mayas; Learn to evoke and project sultry energy in any dance environment; And slither through an improvisational exploration of our dance-space continuum. Topics will include intention, transition, continuity, and energy manipulation. This is a mixed level workshop. Students are encouraged to bring a notebook and water bottle.

1:30pm - 3:00pm - Advanced Drills: Shimmy Layers* - 90 minutes
Taught by Deshret assistant director, Molly

Challenge your coordination and your stamina in this shimmy-intensive total body drill session! We'll begin with an anatomical breakdown of shimmy technique for both the shoulders and the hips to re-acquaint ourselves with the muscles powering our shimmies, followed by a simple warm-up sequence to practice and connect with the basic movement. Building on that foundation, drills will progress in complexity as we work through layering shimmies with movements occuring in different regions of the body (a chest circle on a hip shimmy, for example) to shimmy layers within the same region of the body (shoulder shimmies on chest circles or hip shimmies on an umi) to traveling while layering. Muscular awareness as it relates to layering technique will be emphasized throughout. Bring your water bottle!

*Students should be proficient in basic belly dance isolations to get the most out of this class - recommended for intermediate to advanced dancers.

Advice on filming dance videos

Hi

I´m filming my dance videos, do you have any tips? For example, where do you look when performing for the camera?

I´m watching all my DVDs and I´ve realised dancers rarely look direct to the camera, where do you look? To an infinite point in the horizon? Or do you have a person standing behind so that you can focus your look?

Also any other tips in synchronisation with music when editing, on choosing make-up, clothes, locations, etc. very welcome!

I know this is last minute but I wanted to spread the word about my Burning Man camp fundraiser, Deathguild/Thunderdome...It will take place this Saturday, August 15, in Oakland, CA and I will perform a duet with the assistant director of my dance company, Molly Mitchell. I do hope to see those of you who can make it out...there...It is going to be an incredible evening! And for those of you who know...you know this event is not to be missed...the exhiliration of the fights is off the hook and the feel of Thunderdome's Burning Man is in the air...and the music...oh, it is soooooo good...

MEAT and DeathGuild teamed up for the first time in May of 2006. We will be celebrating this historic union with giveaways and a 30 minute dark fusion Bellydance performance by Ariellah and Deshret Dance Company at 10pm.

Meat represents more than seven years of stompy dance music and tasty BBQ. Death Guild is the second-oldest weekly goth/industrial club in the world, clocking in at more than sixteen years. They battle it out in an abattoir-themed environment with costumed blood-splattered go-go dancers, video, and free fresh BBQ meat. The Dose Lounge brings in several DJs from Opulent Temple spinning breaks. Regardless of who prevails in the battle, the dancefloor always wins!

Was so cool to meet ya. Actually i´m so sad that i Couldn`t made your WS, but i`m lookin` forward to taken WS in Paris.

Anyway

This is the French SInger we talked about. She is really really famous in France like Madonna. Ticket sell for her Concert on 12.09.09 in Stade de Paris started last year in March. The Stade has 66.000 seats and was sold out in 2 hours. 1 1/2 years before the Concerts starts.

practice, practice, practice

My comrades,
It is time to ask:
What are YOU working on right now? What are you practicing or drilling or contemplating or putting into practice?
and do you have any insight, questions, frustrations about it at the moment?
Allow me to begin...
I am working on my stage presence and my walking shimmy.
I am now able to stare directly into the audience, instead of down at my feet...yes, I can now look someone directly in the eye, and give them the look of sultry, dark, blissful, I'm gonna eat you alive, look of death and pleasure and enjoyment...however, it took a lot of constant checking-in with myself and pushing myself and telling myself, don't look down! engage the audience! and what do you know...the audience responded magnificently. After seeing myself on the Gothic Belly Dance DVD, I wanted to make sure I began to focus not just on technique, but stage presence...bringing my true self into my dance. Letting go and smiling and showing my pure enjoyment and also making more direct eye contact with the audience. Thus, this uphill climb began in January and I finally seem a bit more well versed and comfortable.
As for my walking shimmy...it seemed a bit forced, not so fluid...and now it is still not so fluid, but on its way to fluidity for sure...with my daily shower shimmies and walking shimmies down the empty hall at work and then drilling almost every evening, or whenever I have the opportunity to do a full drill session...it is definitely coming along. Bending much more in the knees helps immensely. Any other tips on fluidity of the up or downward shimmy with a walk?

Moving to San Francisco?

Hi!

I'm sorry this is not an Ariellah related topic but maybe you guys can redirect me or help me anyways!

I am a canadian, thinking about moving to San francisco in September to get as much dance training as possible.
I would like to work, do an internship or offer services to tribal dance companies in exchange of classes.
I am going to need a working visa or green card or whatver is needed to find a job.

Has anybody gone through that process before?
What's the cost of living like in SF? housing etc...

ariellah, and tribe, what do you all do for practice and training? i imagine alot of yoga...what types? i myself do yoga, i also x-country ski and chase children lol. do any of you do strength training? i'm up in vermont so i'm out of the loop of what alot of you all do, but I"m trying my best...i just think i've hit a wall with what i've been doing and i need to switch it up with either more variety or something completely different...any ideas???

"Movements Defined: Isolation Work"* ~ Special 3-hour workshop!
Noon - 3:00pm :: $60 per class/$65 per class at door
Learn to create those crisp and tidy locks and pops that very much define the modern forms of belly dance. Work to clearly articulate each movement through muscle memory and make each movement POP with energy, while remaining light and effortless. Emphasis will be placed on strengthening and proper technique in order to create strong isolations. Repetitive drilling and combinations geared towards popping, locking and ticking movements will reinforce muscle memory of isolations and create clean and clear movement separation. *This is a mixed level class.

"Conditioning, Layering & Choreography "* ~ Special 3-hour workshop!

Prepare your body to do more than just drill and isolate, but to dance and to layer basic belly dance movements. For those of you also going to tribalcon in georgia this year,
is their anyone staying in a room at the holiday inn who does not have a roomy and wants one to split the cost? Unfortunately I registered late for this convention and unless I find someone who wants a roomy to split the room cost, I have to stay at a nearby hotel and commute to each workshop back and forth. Let me know if anyone is interested!

Ariellah, you are a genius! My poor little twigs have fallen (mostly) by the wayside!

It seems I was letting the tension of holding my arms up extend all the way down to my pinkies which is why they kept poking up like that. Now that I'm following your suggestion to keep the arms strong and the fingers soft, they are SO much more graceful.

Time to Step it UP!

Hello comrades~
Just thought I would share my 2009 goals with you for my dance practice:
time to get those medium tempo shimmies for sure! in general, more shimmy and hip work galore pretty much.
and a looser belly...I want to master flutters and I want to find that balance between control, grace, strength, technique and to be able to ask of my body whatever I desire and be able to pick and choose what movement I want to perform and not be relegated to only "some" things, but want to be able to choose what part of the body I want to use or to be able to choose HOW I want to execute a move. At any moment I want to be able to do, say, a soft shimmy or a locked pelvic drop or a crazy flutter with an umi or a flowing arm whilst gliding along with my turkish shimmy...you get the picture...
I am gonna try my damnedest...
hope all of you have welcomed the new year with grace and hope for ever sweeter tidings, hard work, and much love of life and all that lies within. I hope you find the beauty that can be found in everything, even in the darkest corners or forests...

Something has come up that has made it particularly difficult for my mother and I to go to this class so we thought we'd try to pass it on to someone else. It's a 4.5 yoga conditioning and bellydance expression workshop taught by Ariellah's vinyasa yoga,instructor (Jennifer Rodrigue) and Ariellah.

The workshop will take place from 1-6p.m. at my Oakland, CA studio on Saturday, January 17, 2009.
Price for the day long yoga and belly dance workshop is $85.00. I can accept payment by paypal.

Jennifer's background is as follows:

Jennifer Rodrigue started a disciplined yoga practice in her early twenties with the encouragement of a medical professional treating her for a spinal injury. She first studied Ashtanga, later Iyengar, and then moved into more serious study of the Yoga Sutra and Bhagavad Gita.

The language and direction of her instruction is informed by practical knowledge from experience. Classes are physically vigorous, although often at a much slower pace than typical vinyasa classes. Emphasis is given to the alignment and synthesis of mind, breath, movement, and directed internalization. Detailed attention to the dynamic characteristics and qualities of this synthesis and internalization is offered, along with varying levels of technique and challenge in order to encourage individual development.

Jennifer will work with you through yogic exercises for the first 2 hours from 1-3p.m. and I will end the workshop with 2.5 hours of belly dance work from 3:30-6p.m., with a half hour break from 3-3:30p.m.

Performance Quality: Bringing Theatre to Your Dance

Dance your music. Take your performance to the next level and make it what it truly wants to be: performance art. Learn to engage the audience, learn to step into character, push out of your comfort zone and add depth to your performance pieces. Begin to explore the backbone of dynamic performance art and all that this entails including building a choreography and truly learning to interpret your music. Elevate your dance with Ariellah in this intensive performance quality workshop. *** Students should have a well rounded knowledge of middle eastern dance and some knowledge of ATS &/or fusion stylized movement.

Ariellah coming to Elevation, April 17-19, 2009 in Denver w/Tribe Marrakech

We are sublimely and understatedly excited to bring the Gothic Princess herself, Miss Ariellah, to the Denver area for Elevation.

Elevation 2009 is the 5th year of our yearly belly dance festival. It is held in the small Western town of Golden, CO, nestled down into a valley and up against the Rocky Mountains, near Denver.

The event venue is across the street from our store/studio Paprika, where some of the smaller classes will be held.
There are also hotels in the next block.

A beautiful river runs through the heart of town, and the largest brewery in the world offers free beer just 2 blocks away!

There will be 3 full days of classes, 2 excellent shows with pro sound, lights, DJ, and VJ.
The Fri night show is catered with a fabulous Middle Eastern buffet, and there will be attendee performances, and the Sat night show is for the teachers and a few special guests.

We hold our shows in a large club, and this really is one of the most FUN events around. It's not an event where everyone is made to sit quietly in a theater and suffer through long and drawn out shows. We have fun and dance and laugh and cut up and have a few dranky-dranks. We've got an excellent DJ of Indian decent fromt the Island of Trinidad that keeps us all jumping to his Chutney Soca and Bangin Bhangra rhythms.

This year more family friendly as well with Kids drumming and dancing classes as well as babysitters for the Fri and Sat night shows.

There will be a great bazaar with Merchants from all over the country.

Movie song

I'm trying to find a good song from a movie to bellydance to...tribal fusion/gothic preferred. I don't watch a lot of movies and I am searching on the net but so far nothing that works. If you had to do a song from a movie, what would you choose? I think this will help me and make an interesting thread!! Thanks.

Workshops with Ariellah

Saturday, November 22nd
9:30 - 12:30 Expressive arms, Hands and Movement
Learn the secrets to Ariellah's expressive arms. Her workshop is
devoted to strengthening and beautifying the belly dancers arm, hand,
belly and chest work, as well as fluidity of movement. Stretching,
strengthening and drilling techniques will be used to build a
repertoire of arm, hand and other movements. Arms and hands are key to
expressing one's music and love of dance. Students will be encouraged
to stylize their own arm movements after drilling the basics. Some
exercises are completed in groups to encourage use of arms and
personal stylization of arms.

1:30 - 4:30 Master Class with Ariellah: Conditioning, Layering, and Combinations
Prepare your body to do more than just drill and isolate, but to dance
and to layer basic belly dance movements. This workshop focuses on
strengthening and isolating core muscles in preparation for layering
movements, incorporating these layering drills into a combinations
learned in the workshop. This workshop, designed especially for
intermediate/advanced dancers will work through combinations to gain a
firmer grasp on the tribal and dark fusion genres of belly dance
