Harro! My name is Jae and i wanted to introduce myself to everyone. My dance name is Jajira, I have been performing for almost 6 years. i am a tribal fusion belly dancer. I am originally from Peoria AZ, but moved to Cincinnati OH in 1995 (when I was 11). Mum is originally from Cincy and wanted me and my brother to grow up around a big family. While there, I fell in love with belly dance, both traditional and fusion. The tribal community there has really embraced me and i will miss it. But my heart belongs home in Phoenix. I am very excited about getting involved in the belly community here and continue growing as a dancer. I've been in chats with Becka Bomb and may be performing the 6th of February. My first performance in AZ! WOO!! Thank you all for your time and I look forward to dancing with you all :)

Attend the Vegas Intensive--Free!!

Hello everyone. (from Director of Volunteers, Reema)

I have been asked to be the Director of Volunteers for the LV Intensive 2009. I am looking for enthusiastic, fun loving people who want to take part in one of the biggest and best events Las Vegas has to offer. So many performers come to Las Vegas and witness first-hand the comradery and family like atmosphere at this event and a great part is owed to all the wonderful and generous volunteers we count on each year.

Additionally, volunteers get the added perks of taking some classes or attending the shows for free, and have fun. There are many opportunities to be involved in. We need people to be ushers,to help at the registration tables, and to check people into classes. We also need help running the festival stage, runners for vendors & performers, personal assistants to the teachers, etc. We'd enjoy having some "belly husbands" who want to help move, set up, and tear down equipment as well as dealing with technical aspects of the event. Please join our Bellydance Intensive family. If you are interested, please e-mail me direct at reema@bellydanceintensive.com.

Sincerely and Yours in Dance,

Reema, Director of Volunteers

Hi everyone!

I'm a DC TF bellydancer who'll be visiting Phoenix next week (July 3-9) to spend time with my parents who just moved to Arizona. Since it's vacation time for me, I'd love to attend a workshop (preferably tribal fusion) or even take them out to a performance while I'm there. Anything going on in the Phoenix area during that time?

Thanks!

So this is my new project. I think they are better then regular ones because you can use them over and over and over again (unless you lose them!) and they are unlikely to ever break. Great investment. Will have more if these sell. Plus they're half the price of others! (if you bid)

Need Big, Cheap Venue.

Levant al-Sonora needs to find a new venue for our big event on Saturday, 7 November 2009. A performing arts school or performance center might be ideal. A church might also be OK. Awlun House is not big enough or open enough.

We NEED:

Performance space (a sizable stage for larger troupes and musical groups).
At least one workshop room.
Room for vending.
We are cost sensitive ($1000 or less for whole package).

We WANT:

A dressing room.
Food (a kitchen we can use.)

If you have any ideas, leads, or contacts please write us at info@levantalsonora.com

Hey, new to the area, just thought I'd ask some questions from the AZ bellydancers! I've been living in san diego and am co-founder of the troupe Alioth Lotus (I go back and forth right now) and was wondering what performance options are around AZ. Any monthly showcases or anything?

Budget Plan for Wiggles of the West extended

Since I'm just getting started on our taxes (I know bad girl), Bill decided we should extend the $340 price for the Full package, incase other people are doing the same. This way if you are waiting for a tax return to sign up or waiting to see how big your return will be, before you spend money, we have you covered. So the Bargain price for the Full Package is extended to April 30, 2009!!!

Most of us have to save to be able to spend on our lovely dance. Me too. I would be saving to go to Wiggles, if I wasn't running it. So I will make you a deal. If there is a workshop you are just dying to take, sign up for it now as ala carte -- and then if you get a great tax return, a present, hit a jackpot, or whatever -- and want to buy a full package or a 2 day package -- I will apply what you have already paid to the package price and you pay the difference. It is a bookkeeping nightmare, but I will do it for you.

Hope to see you all at Wiggles in July in Vegas!!

Hobbyist is the bew category for Wiggles of the West

Yes, it is true, after a big meeting this weekend in Las Vegas we added a NEW category. We have long needed an inbetween category that would fill in the space between Rising Star and Entertainer. Hobbyist is for those of us who just love to dance.

The requirements are 4 or more years experience. You can not perform for money on a regular basis, advertise as a professional, or be a teacher. This category is for Non-professionals. Belly Dance music only. You can be retired from teaching or performing.

I am an example of a Hobbyist. I have lots of experience dancing. I haven't taught a dance class in years. But still love to perform at Haflas and such.

The benifits are the fun of competiting, the great feedback you get from our judges, and you get to share your dance.

Hope to see you in Vegas in July!

We are very excited to announce that registration for the festival portion of the Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive is now OPEN!! Please visit tinyurl.com/festivalinfo for more details.

Additionally, we are also accepting online "auditions" for the evening shows. To be considered for the evening shows, please visit tinyurl.com/auditioninfo for all the details.

***Please note that the festival portion of our event is different from our evening shows. Inclusion in the evening shows is by an online audition and is a different submission form. Inclusion in the festival is open to anyone and is on a first-come first-served basis. If you want to be considered for the evening shows, we recommend filling out a festival submission form as well so you can still dance at the event if you aren't chosen for the show.***

We are looking forward to your participation in the Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive this year.

Yes, we are still working on it, but we/I just can't wait any longer to tell everyone about our NEW and IMPROVED web site. It is wonderful and I'm proud to say my son designed it!!

We now have our own place to hang out, because the web site includes FORUMS. I do believe we have the first Belly Dance Competition web site with their own Forums. We have some forums up and can add more later as need arises. We also have our own Calendar!

We will keep the old site up until all the information has been transfered. Please do go check out our fabulous site at http://www.wigglesofthewestlv.com

Yes, that is right we closed vending last night!! I'm so excited, can you tell. I will announce the last two venders as soon as their paperwork is in order.

As many of you know, we are an invitation only vending event. We are also a first come, first served event. We had several new venders interested in these last too spaces, but these venders jumped right in. Sometimes you just have to act.

We will have a lovely mix of venders for your shopping pleasure. Some long time friends, as well as some new faces. There will be something for everyone from Cabaret to Tribal!!!!

See you in Vegas in July!!

wprkshop with Kate Pitroff in Tucson!

Sunday, December 7, 2008
11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Zuzi East Studio
738 N. 5th Ave.
Tucson, AZ 85705

Rather than learning a cookie-cutter choreography or isolated drills, in this workshop we will discover techniques to build layers of interest into your dance. These methods can add nuance and expression to both improvisational and choreographed performances.

$35 pre-registered (must be postmarked by 11/29)
$40 at door
Pre-registration is highly recommended; previous dance experience is required.

Please email: kate (at) ape-law (dot) com for registration address, or a .jpg of the event flyer.

Kate began her study of Raks Sharki/Middle Eastern Dance in 1985, with Susan Wilson in Tucson, AZ, from whom she learned an appreciation of rhythm and technique. In 1994, she joined Xanadu Studio and began learning from Kathryn Ferguson, international teacher and instructor. She was soon featured as a troupe soloist, and became a frequent teacher at the Studio through 2008, leading classes for beginning through advanced students. Her time with Ms. Ferguson helped her appreciate the importance of emotional musical interpretation.

She takes workshops in dance and rhythm whenever possible in order to expand her knowledge base, and has enjoyed classes with Morocco, Mary Ellen Donald, Jim Boz, Rachel Brice, Dahlena, Armando Mafufo, and Issam Houshan (among others).

As a teacher, she is recommended for her patient, thorough breakdown of movement and combinations.

"Sublime is the word that comes to mind while watching Kate dance. Full of elegance, humor and grace, you just can't take your eyes off her. And as a teacher, Kate is intelligent and thorough, demonstrating her personal skill, as well as extracting the best from a student."

--Kathryn Ferguson
International Teacher, Performer, and Producer

studio moving- free bellydance class offer

I know, I know! Just when I got settled in, paint almost done (well, aside from that ONE wall! wink), and the freakin utility bill is finally coming down I'm moving? Yup.
When I had to close my Wed class due to it being full, when I had to add a Thursday class, when my first tribal class on Saturday became a challenge due to size, my quaint, cozy lil space just didnt do us justice.

It'll be so nice to share responsibility with others, have a bigger dance room, have a wood floor, have two kickin ceiling fans, higher ceilings and yoga yoga yoga!
So my classes make the transfer on October 1st 2008 to The Arcadia area of Phoenix.
The schedule will be:
Fundamentals for Beginners- Wed- 7:40-9pm= $13 (for now so get it while it's at this nice low price)
Fundamentals for Beginners-Sat 12:30-1:30=$13
Basic Tribal Two- $95/8 weeks- 1:45-2:45pm
Tribal Level Two- $95/8 weeks- 3-4pm

I hope to add an additional class during the week in the earlier evening so we shall see.
We accept visa, mc, paypal, cash and I will take a check from students who have been with me for awhile.

And tell ya what- tell me you saw this offer on TRIBE and I will let you take a fundamentals class FREE for your first visit. This is for new faces only so I can make some new student friends.

Thanks for the support in our old location, our new location and now back to the old stomping grounds. Wait till you see the new space- soooo pretty!
COME IN AND BLOSSOM!
Msg me for the details on exactly where the free class/new studio is.

Helm and Ashara in ST George, Utah! sept 12-13

Tabu is honored and excited about performing at the Helm/Asharah show in St. George, Utah on Sat. Sept. 13!

Asharah is an amazing dancer and so fun! And Helm is one of my favorite bands. They do alot of the tribal/ATS style music. Not only is there a show on Sat, but they are both offering workshops Friday and Saturday! Helm is doing two 3 hour workshops on Friday and Saturday. I'm so excited. Their Saturday workshop is on Romani Line dance steps which is a special treat and their Friday workshop is on Arabic Rhythms of Upper Egypt. Thia is also teaching a classical Indian dance workshop on Saturday. And you don't want to miss the opportunity to take classes from DC's Asharah on Sat. More information is available at
www.romdeussen.com/September_Show.html

So come on up to St. George - it's only a 2 hour drive from Vegas - and join Tabu for this awesome and inspiring celebration of tribal dance.

belly dance bra and belt for sale

This is a hand made costume. Both bra and belt are lined. The bra will fit a 34 C. The bra is very sturdy will hold it's shape well.
This costume will work great for new students, hobbyist, class recitals, parties photos and performances.
This is an original one of a kind costume. May see photos in my pics on page 1.

The bra will fit a 34 C. The bra cups are covered in a pink colored fabric with pink bugle beads sewn into the fabric. The bra is trimmed in a gold sequin gimp trim. The bra has beaded fringe made from pink seed beads that hangs about 4 3/4 inches long in groups of three .The neck straps are about 34 inches long and tie in a criss cross manner with D rings. The side panels are covered in a pink color velvet fabric(as well as the neck straps I would like to add) The side panels have D rings attach to the ends to add closure for the bra. The is bra is lined and very sturdy will hold it's shape.

The belt is cover in the same pink beaded fabric and gold trim as the bra cups. . The belt is one piece and is a tie front as if it were a hip sash . (has a bit more weight to it than a hip sash) The belt has an elastic casing in the back that can be gather to help with a better fit around the hips for a dancer with curves. The belt is 35 inches long. The belt will fit a small to medium . the belt can be sized down before I send it if you would like it smaller. The fringe is made from pink colored seed beads like on the bra and is about 5 3/4 inches long. This is a nice set sparkles well in light and good movement with the fringe Email with any questions and more photos. This set is 50.00 plus 8.00 shipping in US . will also ship international email for rates

Bellydance has long been misunderstood and confused with stripping. It is not in any way like stripping. Bellydance is a classy, feminine artform with mesmerizing moves that are sultry not sexual. It is an amazing form of low to medium impact exercise that will both challenge you and help you tone up.
My classes are open to ALL sizes, ages and types of women. I have taught the painfully shy, the overweight, the clumsy, the nerdy. Believe me- it is fun and it is a great excuse to get out of the house for some "me time" away from the kids, the spouse, the office, the emails, the phone... let me take you away this summer on a vacation in bellydance. You will emerge feeling confident and graceful if you give it a try.
Our new studio in Phoenix has classes for beginners- yes! Even if you have zero dance experience. We also have more challenging classes for those who have had past bellydance experience. Choose from our vast array of classes offered at www.freewebs.com/thegoddessgarden
We have world styles, fundamentals, tribal style, tribaret, and more. Not into dancing? Come relax your body AND your mind with one of our refreshing yoga classes.
Tell ya what; come in and tell any one of our instructors you saw the ad on TRIBE and we'll let ya take your first class FREEEEEEE.
Now you cannot refuse, can you!?
The Goddess Garden
Come in and blossom!

Pharos Schedule and Info

http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=376417472&blogID=404873156

Pharos Site:

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=376417472

Critical Info:

WALK-INS, DROP-INS are more than welcome at Pharos. There is no price difference. We ain't like dat! We want everyone to come, partake , and enjoy. So come, take a workshop or two and immerse yourself in Pharos.

Parking: You can park wherever you like at ASU for Pharos' workshops. But if you don't park where I'm about to tell you to park, you will be towed ($120). Don't believe me, Valerie and I got towed just 2 days ago. So pay attention. Pharos workshop parking IS the APACHE parking structure located at Normal St and Apache Blvd. Parking is FREE and you don't need a decal (don't let the signs weird you out). If you park anywhere else, it is at your own risk.

The Apache Parking Structure is like 100 feet away from the SRC building. The SRC is located at 400 E. Apache (Normal and Apache). The entrance to the SRC faces North. Once you enter the SRC, there will be signs posted directing you to the workshop areas. There is security at the front desk and they are aware of the event. Just say you are there for the Pharos event and you will be guided to your destination. The workshops are on the second level, on the south end in rooms C and D. We will have personnel there to assist you in "check-in".

At first you will enter the SRC and be overwhelmed. It's big, state of the art, and nice. Get over it. Pharos owns the SRC for Saturday and Sunday... which means you own it as well. You will see the "studio" rooms and your heads will prolly explode. They are nice and clean and modern and have that spongy stuff underneath the hardwood (easy on your footsies), and plenty of mirrors and natural sunlight and massive AC. There is a balcony with a pretty cool view as well (for you dagnasty smokers).

You can bring in beverages, water bottles, and even snacks if you like. However, whatever you bring in, you take out with you. I don't know if the ASU's MU is open on the weekends, but the MU building (not too far away) houses at least a dozen fast food restaurants. It's actually quite sick. ASU has it going on! (our tax dollars at work).

Photography is allowed and Mikel Floorman may even take some professional pics of the workshops.

I hope you all can appreciate how difficult it was to get ASU on board to support these workshops. We've been in constant negotiations with ASU for over a month. In the end, they are proud to support Pharos and support our drum and dance community. They find merit in the workshops being held, and they are behind us. We have over two million dollars of insurance to protect everyone. However, all participants must sign our waiver form at check-in or you cannot participate in workshops and there are absolutely no refunds for any reason.

The Show: Yes, it's open photography! You are allowed to take pics. We just ask that you keep it to a minimum. Constant "flashes" negatively affect the performance groups. Take pics, but be respectful.

If you have questions, post them and they will promptly be answered.

Thanks.

Pharos LIVE is on Saturday, June 14th at The Sets (93 E. Southern) in Tempe, AZ.

Pharos workshops ARE AT ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY IN THE STUDENT RECREATION COMPLEX (SRC) located @ 400 E. Apache (Apache and Normal) in Tempe.

I hope you all come out to support local music, drumming, and dancing. This is a phenomenal show (a don't miss event!), and the workshops are great too!

Thank you for your support and everyone involved in Pharos (about 100 people from our community) hope to see you there.

For those who can't make Pharos, other local events are occuring during the weekend as well: Way out West and I believe Naj is hosting a gathering as well. We wish them the best of luck and will miss them at Pharos LIVE!

....that moment we've all been waiting for.....
Pharos Live!
There are still tickets available to both the workshops and the show, available at www.trashcityentertainment.com.
Here are my workshops and what you can expect:

Saturday, June 14th, Precision Flow: Stop on a Dime, Bend Space and Time
We'll start with 5-10 minutes of pilates to wake up the muscles and strengthen your legs, arms, and core. Then, we'll jump right into drills that will help with the locks in the combinations. The first combination is called the Triberet Combo and will include challenging moves such as my signature "slide-lock", sidewinders, and my "undulation rewind" mixed with some super slow hip circles and articulated hip drop kicks. The second combo is the Motorcycle Combo, and is the most challenging part of the workshop. You'll combine half Mayas, chest cresents, and undulations into incredibly fast small combinations that suddenly stop and ooze into slow chest rotations. At the end of the 1.5 hrs, we'll stretch and cool your muscles with 5-10 minutes of yoga to help prepare you for the rest of your fun, workshop-filled day! Hopefully, we can get to everything!

Double Fan Fusion (of course!):
We'll start with 5-10 minutes of pilates to wake up the muscles and strengthen your legs, arms, and core. Then, how to hold your fans and open/close them. We'll drill simple fan movements in a slinky, sassy traveling move. Then, we'll work on layering fans with some classic bellydance moves, both stationary and traveling. We'll combine our layers into chort combos such as the Damsel Combo (inspired by Rachel Lazarus Soto) and The Setting Sun (and others!). All of these will then be combined into one huge combo. At the end of the 1.5 hrs, we'll stretch and cool your muscles with 5-10 minutes of yoga to help prepare you for the rest of your fun, workshop-filled day!

I can't wait!!!!

I am sad to report that Carrie Compton of Veils of Mystery has passed away. Many of you may know Carrie as an amazing performer in spite of her blindness. It was always amazing to watch her perfom. This is a great loss for the Tucson dance community. My deepest sympathy to all of her sisters from Veils.

MECDA Fall Festival of Music & Dance

Hello Dancers,

The MECDA chapter is now taking reservations for performance spots on the festival stage. We will have ongoing entertainment from 10:30am to 5:00pm - that's a lot of dancing - come be part of it!

Soloists 5 minutes
Duet/Trio 10 minutes
Troupes 4+ 15 minutes

There will also be 7 drop-in workshops presented by instructors from throughout the state. Please check here for more info:
www.levantalsonora.com

We also need people to volunteer to help with admissions, stage managing and workshop helpers - this can be just a 1 or 2 hour stint during your day and will be greatly appreciated. It takes a LOT more than the 4 members of the MECDA chapter board to run an event like this!

To reserve a spot and/or volunteer please email president@levantalsonora.com.

Thanks,
Mahin

with Sherry VanGoethem
of ADC Performance Troupe and Dance Academy.
Held at the Center for True Harmony Wellness and Medicine
2152 S. Vineyard #138 Mesa AZ 85210
www.trueharmonywellness.com
480-539-6646-ph

Classes will be from 6:20 to 7:20 on Tuesdays. $15/class

Details:

All levels are welcome!
We will be drilling the basic belly dance moves.
For the mid-level to advanced student: Create purified muscle memory in the moves and FULL extension in each of the moves.
For the beginner student: Introduce yourself to the beautiful and sensual moves of belly dance. Begin to master these moves by developing muscle memory.

Benefits:
Develop abdominal muscle strength and definition. You will work all part of your ‘six pack’, the upper, middle and lower abs.
Decrease back pain by learning the moves that will strengthen your lower back and upper back.
Increase arm strength and definition by mastering the belly dance posture
(I call it the Queen pose!)
Get a ‘bum lift’ ;) You will be doing great gluteal exercises to strengthen and actual lift your bum to give you rounded effect from hind sight.
Minimize that shoulder pain by opening up your chest muscles and ‘dropping your traps’. Do your shoulders feel like they are raised to your ears? We will stop that!

In each class we will target different body parts and drill the moves to make each class fun, different, progressive, did I mention …FUN FUN FUN. Listen to great grooving music, move your body, increase your heart rate and learn dance you can take home to your man;)

Workshops:

AFRICAN DANCE FOR BELLY DANCERS
(Sunday, June 15th, 2008 from 1:30pm to 3:00pm)
ASU Student Recreation Complex (SRC) Dance room D
$30
Instructor:
Mabiba Baegne

One of the best and well known African dancers/drummers/singers, Mabiba Baegne, will be in town on Sunday June 15th to teach ONE WORKSHOP ONLY at the Mystic Jewell Studio at 1:30pm (as part of Pharos). This is the rarest of opportunities to learn from the best. And, she knows that many of your are belly dancers, so her dance class has you in mind.

Beyond that, this is the only dance class that is taught to LIVE drummers, courtesy of AZ Drum and Dance. She’s gonna work you out and rock your world. I’m fairly certain that every instructor for Pharos is taking this class (depending on schedule), so you won’t be alone. New horizons and mixing it up... that’s what it’s all about. Check out the BIO below (workshop price $35. Registration available at www.Trashcityentertainment.com under Pharos):

Mabiba Baegne was born in Brazzaville in the Congo and was initiated
into dance by her grandparents when she was eight years old.

She joined the National Ballet of the Congo with Bolle Bantu. She worked as artistic director, choreographer and taught dancing, drumming and singing plus performed with children (from kindergarten through university level) and also with adults.

Mabiba has worked under the tutelage of Grand Master Djembe players Famoudou Konate and Mamady Keita. Mabiba has toured and performed with both djembe players. She teamed with Mamady in the famous Zig Zag School of African dancing and drumming in Belgium.

As a singer she has toured with Salif Keita, Mamady Keita, and Samba Ngo. She appeared on television and radio programs singing with well-known French singer, France Gall. She is a featured singer on Mamady’s first CD (“Wassolon”) and was a member of Sewa Kan. For many years, Mabiba has been in high demand as a dance and drumming teacher throughout the United States.

In the United States, Mabiba has been instrumental in teaching Central and West African dancing and singing. As well as the first woman to teach traditional West African (Guinea) dununs in the U.S. She was the first woman to produce a dunun training tape here. She has given Master classes at Stanford, San Francisco State, Oregon State, University of Washington (Seattle), UC Santa Cruz, Mills College (Oakland), etc.

Among her US performances, was her role as “Djinga (the King Queen of Angola)” at Brooklyn Academic of Music, in Minneapolis, MN, at the Shakespeare Center in Washington, DC and at Mills College (Oakland).

ZILS & FRAMES:
Instructor: Raquy & The Cavemen

This class will be broken up between zil instruction and frame drum instruction (riqq, tar, etc.). It’s a dancer friendly percussion class that will teach zil technique and patterns to many common rhythms. Towards the end, the class will focus on frame drums and perhaps we’ll all just jam :)

BEGINNER DUMBEK (122)
(Sunday, June 15th, 2008, from 9:00am to 11:00am)
ASU SRC building Dance room C
$35
Instructor: Raquy Danziger

This class will incorporate the following: How to hold the drum, basic sounds (dum, tek, ka), traditional rhythms, accompaniment of Middle-Eastern songs and dance, and some basic concepts in soloing.

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED DUMBEK (270)
(Sunday, June 15th, 2008, from 1:30pm to 3:30pm)
ASU SRC building Dance room C
$35
Instructor: Raquy Danziger

This workshop will focus on: Odd rhythms, snaps, different types of finger rolls, and Turkish Split Hand Technique, as well as address more about solos and accompaniment. This is your class drummers. Ask lots of questions. Raquy is like totally the most coolest and nicest person, so don’t be shy.

Raquy Danziger is one of the most popular performers, teachers and composers of Middle Eastern Drumming today. Audiences worldwide are not only surprised by this young woman from America, but captivated by her virtuosity, profound musicality and the passion she brings to performances. Her varied repertoire includes traditional Middle Eastern music as well as her own compositions.

For the past few years, Raquy has been going to Egypt to teach and perform, where she has collaborated with some of the most famous musicians, including Said El-Artist and Hamish Henkish, she has appeared on regional TV including Al-Jazeera Channel and National Egyptian Television and was interviewed by numerous magazines.

A classically trained pianist, Raquy first discovered hand drumming during her travels in Varanase, India where she immersed herself in the study of Indian rhythmic cycles. Later, in Israel, Raquy was drawn to the dumbek (otherwise known as tabla) and the groove of Middle Eastern music.

In the last few years, Raquy has found her own voice as a soloist, group leader and composer. She writes compositions for ensembles comprised of her students as well as master players from the Middle East. She also formed Raquy and the Cavemen, a group in which she also plays the Iranian kemenche, a rare and exotic bowed instrument.

Raquy’s infectious enthusiasm for Middle Eastern music has made her one of the most sought after teachers of Middle Eastern drumming. An inspiration to scores of students locally and hundreds more at drumming camps and retreats around the country, Raquy is single–handedly responsible for the wave of “Dumbek Fever” sweeping the metropolitan area.

Raquy has released a Dumbek Instructional Kit - “Dumbek Fever” - which includes a book, a DVD and a CD that’s selling all over the world. She also released 4 albums: “Naked” (2007), “Jordan” (2005), “Dust” (2003) and “Masmudi” (2001). “Dust” has reached the top 20 on the CMJ world chart and “Jordan” debuted at the top 30.

Raquy and the Cavemen allow the listener to experience the musical cultures from The Middle East and Egypt and fuse them with Liron Peled’s hard rock drumming background. The name Cavemen is appropriate due to the rawness of the beats, and there is also a timeless property to the music that makes it impossible to dislike. The whole experience of the music takes you on a journey to the roots of Middle Eastern drumming. Its sound is like a close stare into the eyes and soul of the Middle Eastern culture that lives inside the music. Raquy brings forth the experience of an ancient culture straight to the stage for everyone to reflect, react and rotate to.

BASIC DJEMBE TECHNIQUES
(Sunday, June 15th, 2008, from 11:30am to 1:00pm)
ASU SRC building Dance room C
Instructor: Bernd Geh

BERND GEH has been continuously teaching West African drumming since 2001 in the Phoenix area. Bernd is originally from Germany and started to study the Malinke music in 1997 with his major and most influential teacher Herman Kathan, who is a professional drummer and represents Tam-Tam Mandinge Germany, which is a branch of Mamady Keita’s worldwide djembe school network.

Bernd also learned from numerous African masters and teachers, such as Mamady Keita, Famoudou Konate, Adama Drame, Amadou Kienou, Moussa Traore, Abdoul Doumbia and Bolokada Conde.

Bernd is currently a professional level student of Mamady Keita.

But wait, there’s more!

DYNAMIC TRIBAL IMPROV
(Saturday, June 14th, 2008, from 11:00am to 12:30pm)
$35
Instructor: Christina of HANDS OF KALI

This workshop will concentrate on the important interplay between short, “simple” moves and longer combos in tribal improv. The relationship of these different types of moves, with multi-tempo music, brings a lively dynamic to any group improv. After high-energy drills on shimmies and zills, this class will move right into an intensive tribal bellydance workout guaranteed to make you sweat and smile, all at the same time. Suitable for dancers at all skill levels.

STEAM PUNK CHOREOGRAPHY
(Saturday, June 14th, 2008, from 3:30pm to 5:00pm)
ASU SRC building Dance room D
$35
Instructor: Maureen of HANDS OF KALI

What is “Steampunk”?

Steampunk is a subgenre of fantasy and speculative fiction which came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of “the path not taken” of such technology as dirigibles or analog computers; these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or a presumption of functionality. It has now manifested itself into fashion and music.

Learn an original, steam-punk-inspired Hands of Kali choreography to the song “Proper Hoodidge” by Amon Tobin—perform it solo, as a troupe, or just pick and choose the combinations that you want to add to your dance repertoire. We will do a quick yoga warm-up (bring a mat if you have one); then learn the 3-minute routine, which alternates slinky moves with pops and locks. Handouts with choreography notes will be provided.

SWORDS AND DARKNESS:
(Sunday, June 15th, 2008, 3:30pm to 5:00pm)
ASU SRC building Dance room D
$35
Instructor: Kendra, the head of HANDS OF KALI

Get ready for the World’s most innovative, contemporary, fresh, skilled, and dare I say... Darkest Belly Dance Troupe in existence. Formed in 2003, Hands of Kali are out to make a statement... lead, Follow, or get out of the way. Under the direction of Kendra, you will be challenged and you will overcome (she will make you). Your horizons will be broadened, you will learn, you will appreciate... and you, yes you, will be infinitely better for surviving it... and Kendra and The Hands of Kali will be there for you, supporting you along the way with patience and praise.

PRECISION FLOW: STOP ON A DIME, BEND SPACE AND TIME
(Saturday, June 14th, 2008 from 9:00am to 10:30am)
ASU SRC building Dance room D
$30
Instructor: Bastet

This fun, sassy, and challenging workshop integrates the modern precision of “hits” from pop-n-lock, the timeless grace of bellydance, and the mesmerizing appearance of “flow”-a distorted sense of time-into your fusion repertoire. Classic Egyptian Cabaret, Tribal fusion, and ATS stylings are transformed into an energetic and hypnotic performance with “hits” (or “pops”) that melt seamlessly into excruciatingly slow transitions called “flow” that seem to bend time, leaving your audience breathless until you travel back into normal space and time.

DOUBLE FAN FUSION
(Sunday, June 15th, 2008, from 9:00am to 10:30am)
ASU SRC building Dance room D
$30
Instructor: Bastet

Bastet first picked up a pair of fans in 1999 to bring something new to the urban dance scene in Florida. Fusing her urban stylings with subsequent training in Egyptian Cabaret, Tribal Fusion, and American Tribal Style, Bastet creates powerful and dynamic performances. Well-known for her exciting double fan performances throughout the southeastern United States and her new home in New Mexico, Bastet teaches the use of props and layers as an extension of your natural movement, creating graceful, powerful, and fluid performances. Until her recent move, Bastet was a performer with the tribal fusion troupe, The Dance of the Fates (now Jahara Phoenix), based outside of Atlanta, GA.

Last but certainly not least, there are workshops from the famous, talented, and beautiful DIOSA!!! She doesn’t do workshops that often, but has agreed to do two workshops at PHAROS! What a treat! Here they are:

POP AND DROP: BELLY HIP-HOP
(Saturday, June 14th, 2008, from 1:30pm to 3:00pm)
ASU SRC building Dance room D
$30
Instructor: Diosa Holmes

This fun and entertaining workshop consists of belly dance combinations fused with hip hop movements. Students join combinations into a complete choreography, with the ability to use the finished piece for their own performing events. A brief explanation is provided on how to diagram a song and choreograph to music (a template will be provided).

THUMP & DRUM: PULSATE TO PERCUSSION
(Sunday, June 15th, 2008, from 11:00am to 12:30pm)
ASU SRC building Dance room D
$30
Instructor: Diosa Holmes

This enjoyable and slightly challenging workshop incorporates many classic and modern elements of the “drum solo” performance. Students incorporate locking techniques, sharp muscle control, and expressive traveling movements to develop a stylized and complete choreographed piece that can be performed to any 4/4 rhythm. A brief explanation is provided on how to diagram a song and choreograph to music (a template will be provided).

Diosa won 1st runner up for Belly Dancer of the Universe 2004 in the Fusion Category. She also performs at many venues and has danced for Shakira, Sonia Montero de Falcone, the Arizona Republic, Lollapalooza, Rakkasah, Cooperstown, Arizona State University, and more.

She was formerly a member of the Arizona Belly Dance Troupe, led by Danah Stedman, the award winning Black Opal Dance Company directed by Ava Fleming, guest dancer of Maryana/Melissa’s Unity in Motion, and Kahlea’s Natium World Dance and Diabolique: Unconventional Entertainment. Diosa is currently the director of a new Middle Eastern ensemble, The Desert Flowers. The troupe performs Egyptian cabaret, hip-hop fusion, Eastern Indian fusion, and American tribal. They have performed at Zoofari at the Phoenix Zoo, Maricopa County Fair, the Arizona State Fair, and many private parties around the Valley. The Desert Flowers have had the privilege to work with wonderful groups such as Satori Sunrise and White Claws World Percussion.

That’s it! There ya go Phoenix drum and dance community (and beyond). Four drum workshops and eight dance workshops from some of the best talent around. Wow, a bunch of drummers and dancers congregating in one place learning and mingling... it’s like a collegiate hafla.

I feel as if I’m missing something though...

Oh yeah! There is the Pharos LIVE! show on Saturday night (June 14th, 2008, at 7:30pm at The Sets in Tempe). What is Pharos LIVE? Well, it’s seven local and national ethnic music groups (with a lot of drumming) gathering in one place for one event... with dancers galore, and all for one incredible, once in a lifetime, show. Acts include (and in no particular order):

Raquy and The Cavemen performing with Diosa, Bastet, and Hands of Kali

The White Claws performing with The Desert Flowers, Satori Sunrise, and Anaya Tribal

Of the Earth performing with their dancers

Soleil Noir performing with Deja Dance

Arizona Drum and Dance throwin’ it down with African dancers

and Traveler performing with their dancers.

Special performance by Katara, audience tarot reading by Hands of Kali, hookas, alcohol, more alcohol, a Moroccan market with various venders, and last but not least... more alcohol. It’s like an SCA event gone horribly right! C’mon, that was funny.

Perhaps... just perhaps, more will be added.

Vending space is available at The Sets. Contact Chris @ www.trashcityentertainment.com
Drum solo workshop w/ Carrie Konyha

Drum Solo Technique & Choreography workshop with Carrie
June 21st. 10:30am, $25
Drum solos are a staple part of any full length belly dance show but dancers often find it difficult to understand how to dance most affectively to a drum solo.
free bellydance class

So you STILL havent made it to one of my classes, huh?
Or maybe you have that one friend who still keeps saying she plans to come but never makes it in.
Or you could just be nosy enough to wanna come see the new studio!

Well here is the push you need.
Summer is right around the corner and while I dont support diets I DO support having fun and heck if a leg gets toned or a waist gets whittled, all the better! So, let me offer you some encouragement.

During April & May I will offer students who have never taken a class with me a free "try it class". These are offered only on Saturdays at 12:30 or on Wednesdays at 6:45pm. This is my entry level bellydance class but even if you arent a beginner, I promise you some fun and exercise!
These classes are normally $13/hour or $15 1.20hr but to get your booty in here, I will toss out a freebie. Hopefully you like the class, my teaching and our new studio enough to sign up for the session or come back again next time.

*The ONLY catch is you have to RSVP the date you plan to come so my classroom doesnt get overfull and we dance on top of one another.
When you arrive, please park in back, remove shoes in the reception area and come in to have some fun.

The schedule is being added to weekly here:
http://www.freewebs.com/thegoddessgarden/classschedule.htm
So you can keep up to date on all the dance, fitness and wellness classes we offer.

> Keep in mind this freebie offer is only for MY classes, not the other instructors'. They will occasionally send out offers to so stay awake. : )
I hope to meet you soon!

Bloom - 4.19.08

The Bedroom DJs and Othermind Productions present:

Bloom
April 19th, 2008
In the Arizona desert

Spring is here, and it is quickly turning into summer. Our opportunities to camp comfortably in the desert are dwindling, and our community of music nuts has requested that we have just one more outdoor before summer. Join us as we take ourselves, some food and drink, and a sound system into the Arizona wilderness to camp, dance, and have a good time.

Audio Navigation provided by:

CL McSpadden
Mitch Mills
Matty (London West Records)
Nick Synergy (Sonic Dragon Records)
Hahn the Barbarian (Mechanical Dragon Records)

Deco by Stimulate Productions and YOU!

RSVP now - this is a limited attendance event. Send an email to goa@overmindworks.com (put "RSVP - Bloom" in the subject line) or visit London West Records - please provide your name, the names of those accompanying you, and your email address. You must RSVP by Friday, 4/18 in order to guarantee that you are sent directions on Saturday, 4/19.

This event is free to attend, but it does cost money to make it happen. If 30 or more people donate as little as $10 each, events such as this one are much more sustainable. Donations are accepted via PayPal (enter "Bloom" in the payment notes) at http://www.overmindworks.com or at London West Records.

Carpooling is STRONGLY encouraged, and we also recommend using vehicles with higher ground clearance (Trucks & SUVs). Most of the locations/roads used are Honda-friendly, but extreme caution is recommended. If you are unfamiliar with driving on forest roads, send us an inquiry.

This is a LEAVE NO TRACE event - this means we leave the area cleaner than we found it. Bring garbage bags, clean up the area around you, and take out what you bring with you. Bring flashlights, water, warm clothes, and everything you might need to survive for a night in the wilderness.
Drum Solo for Dancers workshop

Hi, everyone, I wanted to give a little more information about the Drum Solo workshop with Souhail on May 4th. I get a lot of questions about the format of the class, so here's some more info. I've been to several of them and they're pretty cool! I'll be there helping with live percussion for you gals to practice to. Here is the class description, and see below for the current special discount package. =)

Drum Solo for Dancers:

Learn to dance to common riffs and rhythms during a live drum solo!

Souhail has coached hundreds of dancers and drummers across the nation with his patient teaching style. He uses a traditional Egyptian format for teaching Raqs al Sharqi in which the dancer visually portrays Middle Eastern music through their dance.

In this class, you will become familiar with common rhythms and drum combinations used in live drum solos, with repetition of the rhythms so you can lock in different combinations. Souhail will give each student personal advice on how to really make their movements *pop* with the accents and downbeats of the solo. A good drum solo compliments the drummer and the dancer, and in this class you will learn to really enhance your own style for a killer drum solo!

All skill levels are welcome in this class! Continuing students, please bring your questions about drum solo interpretation. The class can be catered to your requests. The workshop will be held at Naj's Bellydance Shoppe on Cave Creek Rd south of Greenway on Sunday, May 4th at 12:30.

Dance package special for April: Pre-register for the Drum Solo for Dancers class and get into the hafla for $5! You can pre-register here: www.phoenixhafla.com through Paypal or by check/money order via standard mail. I will also be taking pre-payments at Bellypraise Nights on April 20th at the Bellydance Shoppe.
