I've been teaching art for 10 yrs. in a Title I middle school. I love teaching, but I hate the demands that are place on teachers. It really depends on your school and what your principal expects of you. But don't expect it to be glamorous and fulfilling every day. It has its wonderful moments, but much of what you do will involve dealing with discipline problems, paperwork, and supporting standardized testing (doing projects that support math, reading, etc). Title I (low income) schools are the most demanding. And art is the dumping ground for every kid with any kind of problem whether physical, emotional, or behavioral (if they can't do anyting else, they can surely do art, right?). It is hard to keep up the momentum required to work with low income/disadvantaged/high risk kids because they have so many struggles in their lives and school simply is not a top priority. My advice? Try to get into a middle class school where the kids value education and you have parental support. You can try working with low income kids, but you've really got to be ready for some truly hard work - emotionally and physically or you will burn out quickly. Don't mean to discourage you, its just the reality of the situation in public schools these days. Or you might try private school.
