Maybe I have already posted this and forgot...
What is the relationship between curiosity and creativity?
For me curiosity trumps creativity, or at least it should. I see a lot of stuff created by people that has almost zero curiosity in it, just stuff people are cranking out. You can't really have one without the other. If you have a great idea that came from curiosity but never created it...well, so much for the idea. But if you are not thinking about the whys, the whats and the wherefores, the work suffers.
curiosity>creativity

anger can lead to creativity.
fantasy can lead to creativity

There is also work without creativity. Then it is craftmanship. Not art.

Re: Curiosity vs. Creativity
Sun, December 23, 2007 - 6:33 AMGreat topic I don't recall seeing here before!
I think of curiosity as absolutely integral to creativity.
In fact, the name of this tribe could very easily be art//curiosity.
My art//creativity springs totally from the fact that I am chronically curious. I NEED to know about everything. Everything INTERESTS me. And from that constant wave of interesting information/stories/feelings/impressions stems the headfull of ideas that constantly plagues me a (in a good way!) and fuels my imagination and my creative output.
I would venture so far as to say that it is degree of curiosity that makes the artist -- and, of course the inventor, another form of artmaking. -

Mon, December 31, 2007 - 10:38 AMI've held a belief that a lot of art comes from curiosity, driven by a simple question, "I wonder what it would look like if . . . " -

Wed, January 2, 2008 - 4:03 PMNevermind the taboo terrirory. It always amazes me the courage it takes to do the simplest of things like:
"change that proportion
"make that bigger"
"use that photo"
"try it like that"

Re: Curiosity vs. Creativity
Thu, January 3, 2008 - 4:27 AMFace to face with that blank, pristine surface and begin always seems to take courage, but it's curiosity that drives it. What will happen? How will it turn out? I think the creativity comes in really in being able to use whatever happens and make it meaningful. I'm not sure it's a 'versus' thing. I think one drives the other. -

Re: Curiosity vs. Creativity
Sun, January 6, 2008 - 9:51 AMVersus might be a strong word for it. But I see a bias towards teaching people to be creative, creating without consciousness. though sometimes losing consciousness can be useful...

Wed, January 9, 2008 - 12:06 PMwhy NOT paint cats? they seem to enjoy it :P
Now if only we could get them to paint themselves, it would be an awesome performance piece!

I think curiosity is about interest...and I think interest creates the passion that makes art great...
sometimes even mediocre art has this aura of the passion of the artist that just takes it to another level

Re: Curiosity vs. Creativity
Sun, January 6, 2008 - 11:24 AMFor me personally, most of my creativity comes from curiosity ... some just comes from doing things just to do them and see what happens. I don't always have an intention when I start things. I could give you a specific for instance, but suffice to say I started something and let it sit in a spot where I could see it every day ... and left it there until an idea popped into my head. Then it was off to a store to get the necessary pieces to finish it (with the new found idea).
I'd say in this instance that it was creativity without curiosity ... but the work didn't suffer ... maybe because the idea was relatively simple and I planned it out before putting it together ... somewhat, anyway. -

Re: Curiosity vs. Creativity
Mon, January 7, 2008 - 1:26 PMCuriosity vs. Creativity: together as one with intention to do it - what ever it is.
Indeed there are creative actions engaged in creating creations, and it could be dull from lack of curiosity, yet who is to say why but the creator :O) Courage *yes, and the gumshoe to do it, to take an idea and explore, to hold up the view finder for the composition is in itself a window for curiosity, our most powerful super power.
Me too, intuitive creative process is my favorite, where as the image changes I start to see the reason and pursue it as an exploration, is where some of the best works ever have evolved from. Chancy cause it can sometimes produce crap.....and folks that is O.K. really great infact, otherwise, how would we know the difference?
Lets take the chance with curiousity for creativity sakes, and let there be art! :O) -

Great point! It's the path-to-who-knows-where that is so intriguing. And when one looks back at the twists and turns of the creative flow of one's journey, it can inspire fascination with what's around the next bend.
