Re: A color "riddle"
Thu, March 27, 2008 - 6:19 AMThe previous answers are perfect. What I had in mind was this:
If you couch red (or bright yellow) between black and white, it forces the usually-bright color to sit in the middle, making it (red or yellow) behave as a mid-tone (gray). There are quite a few examples, but here's one in Motherwell: people.tribe.net/85c5a0c2-...cda2dbe750
Thanks for the brain time. Just for fun. -

Re: A color "riddle"
Fri, March 28, 2008 - 9:28 AMJon, glad to help.
As a young man I made a copy of Motherwell's Poncho Villa, Dead or Alive, 1947. At the time I had all these old modernists for teachers. One of them, Doug Haynes, told me when he was a kid standing in line for art school, he asked the guy next to him why he was in line for art school.
"Poncho Villa Dead or Alive," he said.
"Me too," my teacher said.
So here's that one: images.google.com/imgres
For the hell of it. Here's my old teacher, Douglas Haynes: images.google.com/imgres
