For me it's demons within being externalized on canvas.

Has anyone else delved into the reasons why you create?

Looking to meet more live painters in Philly!

So I'm really interested in collaborating with Philly artists that like to create live performance painting... There are a bunch of artists in NYC that are doing awesome Art Battles (www.artbattles.com) and other live painters all over the country that are creating some really cool stuff as well. I'm hoping to find more like-minded people that are interested in pursuing this style of art. We can paint in all kinds of different venues and approach this concept in many different ways: solo improvisations, live painting competitions, a fine tuned collaboration with multiple artists on one canvas (think an abstract artist that practices with a urban graffiti artist or cartoonist), group consciousness murals, and even super-theatrical painting performances on stage.

"The display of Schvarts’ project will feature a large cube suspended from the ceiling of a room in the gallery of Green Hall. Schvarts will wrap hundreds of feet of plastic sheeting around this cube; lined between layers of the sheeting will be the blood from Schvarts’ self-induced miscarriages mixed with Vaseline in order to prevent the blood from drying and to extend the blood throughout the plastic sheeting.

Schvarts will then project recorded videos onto the four sides of the cube. These videos, captured on a VHS camcorder, will show her experiencing miscarriages in her bathrooom tub, she said. Similar videos will be projected onto the walls of the room."

What is the best way to really become good at painting?

Hello All,
I have spent the last 5 years in full time school and work, blah, blah,blah.....and i didnt have time to take any art classes. I have to self teach. I work with acrylics and have all the brushes and paints etc. I know i am terrible. I have lots of ideas of what i want to do, but cant translate it to canvass. So my question is: Any suggestions on the best technique to get better? Obviously it means painting a lot, but should i force myself to paint 10 minutes every day, whether i am in the mood or not or should i try to paint a subject 10 times in one sitting? Any suggestions? I realize every one is different in their approach to art. At this point i just need some guidance.

Good bad

I just noticed I posted after the maximum thread length, although, despite the warning that additional posts will not be threaded, it always seem to work. In case it's true, I wanted to add to that interesting discussion on what is good or bad. Plus, this will give the thread new life. Anyway, here is where I went:
think a post-modernist might argue that there is no bad art, except for their critiques of modernism.

But first, the example of Van Gogh is interesting because I think the "discovery" of his hidden genius is part and parcel of his mystic. Laypeople's fascination with Van Gogh's reassessment is measured in dollars. In the artworld, he is valued as an important relay in the history of modernism. In his time, his value as a modernist was already evident, not to the official salon artists of the time, who were having a totally different kind of dialogue, but apparent to the growing modernist movement.

If there is any context rigid with absolutes, it would be modernism. Because modernism's roots are found in the renaissance, imo, modernism was able to rake in generations of artists into the domain of modernism, right up to today. At least half of all works have been assessed through modernist concerns--what is good, what is bad. I say half, because the other half has been interpreted through the lens of the post-modernist. Except fot the post-modernists' general distain for modernism, it's rare that they pronounce any any as bad.

The zeitgeist of our time has not been the re-evaluation of what was once-bad as now-good, but more often the turn toward what was once-good is now-bad. Maybe, even more cynically, what is now-good is also now-bad.

"The moment my legs begin to move, my thoughts begin to flow."
~Henry David Thoreau

"Going out for a walk, I really found I was going in."
~John Muir

"Angels whisper when we walk."
~Raymond Inmon

"Before your thought walk, spend a few minutes reviewing several half-finished or stalled works. You have to burn them into the brain and take honest stock of their problems. Quickly leave the studio. Decisiveness, courage, audacity and perfectly reasonable solutions you weren't able to see before, come to those who walk with the goddess."
~Robert Genn

(Thanks for these to Robert Genn.)

I not only find I come up with solutions when I go for a walk, but also come up with new ideas. And I ALWAYS carry my camera to keep me in "observational/contemplative mode". Missy (my dog) is looking at me right now to take her for that daily walk. Coming, Missy... and thanks for the inspiration.

Unifier Of Opposites -- The Color Green

"Green is a combination of the colors yellow and blue, each of which brings its own unique energy to the overall feeling of the color green. Blue exudes calm and peace, while yellow radiates liveliness and high levels of energy. As a marriage between these two very different colors, green is a unifier of opposites, offering both the excitement of yellow and the tranquility of blue. It energizes blue’s passivity and soothes yellow’s intensity, inspiring us to be both active and peaceful at the same time. It is a mainstay of the seasons of spring and summer, thus symbolizing birth and growth.

Green is one of the reasons that spring instigates so much excitement and activity. As a visual harbinger of the end of winter, green stems and leaves shoot up and out from the dark branches of trees and the muddy ground, letting us know that it’s safe for us to come out, too. In this way, green invites us to shed our layers and open ourselves to the outside world, not in a frantic way, but with an easygoing excitement that draws us outside just to sniff the spring air. Unlike almost any other color, green seems to have its own smell, an intoxicating combination of sun and sky—earthy, bright, and clean. In the best-case scenario, it stops us in our tracks and reminds us to appreciate the great experience of simply being alive.

Green balances our energy so that, in looking at it, we feel confident that growth is inevitable. It also gives us the energy to contribute to the process of growth, to nurture ourselves appropriately, without becoming overly attached to our part in the process. Green reminds us to let go and let nature do her work, while at the same time giving us the energy to do our own."

~From DailyOM web site

Green's my fave colour and one I use a lot in my work. Other fans of green out there? or any comments on its attributes, uses, etc?

From an article in today's Los Angeles Times, "60 Seconds With... Charles Lloyd":

LA TIMES: ON MARCH 15 YOU TURNED 70. THE BAND YOU'RE WORKING WITH PROBABLY AVERAGES HALF THAT AGE. HOW DOES THAT FEEL?

CHARLES LLOYD: There don't seem to be any problems with our age or chemistry, and that's a beautiful thing. I don't know that the age thing has to impede what informs us. And I've learned not to blow fuses the way I did as a young man.

LA TIMES: YOU'VE ALSO BEEN MORE SUCCESSFUL IN A BUSINESS SENSE THAN MANY JAZZ MUSICIANS, ESPECIALLY WITH REAL ESTATE.

CHARLES LLOYD: An artist friend, back in the '60s, once said to me, "You've got to find a way to endow your creativity." And that was a landmark saying to me. Because we never grew up thinking about money. We grew up thinking about how to be better at this music. But when I first went to Malibu in '69 there was a sign on the highway that said, "Welcome to Malibu the Gold Coast, where one good investment is worth a lifetime of labor." And that thought wasn't wasted on me.

LA TIMES: YOU'VE BEEN EXPLORING THE SPIRITUAL TRADITION OF VEDANTA FOR MANY YEARS. HOW HAS IT AFFECTED YOU?

CHARLES LLOYD: We should be kind to each other. We're passing through here, it's not our home, and you can't build a house on a bridge, but the winds of grace are always blowing, and if we set our sails high, we can experience them.

The Power of Red

Robert Genn's missive for today:

"With a little help from the animals, vegetables and minerals, one of humanity's persistent habits is to colour ourselves with pigments and coloured objects. There are five main functions:

To be seen or noticed
To give info of rank or status
To warn of danger
To remain unseen or to confuse
To be admired or desired

It seems that colour itself is loaded with potential power. Interestingly, it's the colours black and white (dark and light) that have the most differentiating variations in the vocabularies of the world's languages. Also, for some reason, women use colour as a verbal signifier almost twice as often as men. Men tend to use size.

Next to black and white, red is the most popular colour. It's also the last colour to go and the first to return in near-death experiences. Associations with blood, soil and sensual stimulation account for some of red's historic popularity. Red roses arrive with Valentine's red heart.

Psychologist Nick Humphrey notes that in the case of "flame," both safety and danger are signified. It's the ambiguity that's important. Red depends on context. Apparently, red asks us to gather more information.

It's safe to say that with the advent of modern dyes and pigments, there is more colour around these days. Bright colours were formerly rare and had to be coaxed from sources like bird feathers, cochineal beetles or cow's urine. Do we now suffer from colour overkill? Is colour losing her winning ways? Incredibly, the British Army was formerly tailored in red; the appearance of power and threat having more value than ease of shot. Of course, red still signifies danger (stop signs are generally red) and is present on almost every national flag.

From a painter's point of view, a "red surprise" is most effective for bringing focus and heightened interest to many works. "Warm is better than cool," say some of the colour pundits. Red will remain forever hot."

--------------

Although, in general, green is my favourite colour, I love making the opportunity of using red as a keynote colour in paintings, photos, etc.
Thoughts on this topic?

Art Studio Ideas

1) GET A PORTABLE STUDIO – Keep an art journal with you 24/7/365 as it can
be amazingly affective for you and your work. It is a powerful tool to
access your own personal creative space at the drop of a hat! Most of all it
allows you to hit the studio with out having a formal space that you
physically go to, or when you are away from your formal studio. All in all,
the important thing is that it is your space to have and to hold, regardless
of where you are and what you are doing. You can just connect with that
essential part of you that wants to WORK any time, anywhere.

2) CREATE A COMMUNITY SPACE – All over the globe there are spaces available
for rent. Do some research! Find out from who, what, when and where you can
rent out a space. Then take the space and cute it into 4 separate spaces.
You take one space and rent the other 3 out for whatever your expenses are
(rent, heat, electric). This is a totally positive, exciting way to develop
a free space for yourself and support others who are looking for inexpensive
work space and want to be around other like-minded artists! If you present
yourself to the owner of the space in a serious manner with a clear plan and
a commitment to the project he or she might even create the space for you
and keep your start up costs real low.

3) You can TAKE THIS IDEA and build on it all the way to owning your own
building with studios and a gallery, art café and so on… It has been done
all over the world for many years. Just start small, use your creative mind,
and think "space"! Just keep thinking about it until you make it happen! It
does not take money, it takes time, smarts and the willingness to believe!

oh, you're an 'ARTIST'...

Thanks to Hollywood we get a real skewed POV of who/what artists are.
I was watching Wedding Crashers and they had the 'black sheep' of the family- a gay artist who 'smears blood around on canvas with a stick'
In The Big Lebowski its someone working in the nude, swooping down on a canvas from a suspended system of cables.

What other poor representations of artists can you think of?

Hi Folks..

Awhile ago, I passed this along...about a Tribe sister who's son Chris has been missing since September.

(Here is the website:http://www.findchris.org/)

There is some news! It is the first lead in the case!

"Today a girl working at a gas station in Cortez, CO says' she can positively identify Chris as a boy that has come in several time, most recently with 2-3 day, trying to buy cigarettes..."

Here's hoping that the good folks in law enforcement can take this lead and finally bring Chris home!

Please send out some good vibes and, if you could, pass this info along to anyone you know in Colorado
and especially in the Cortez area.

Here is a link to a map for Cortez, CO:

thanks,
Folk art

My friend showed me yesterday how to make apple heads. That is so much fun!
Can't wait for the end result. Mine is now hanging above the heating vent.

Here is a link how to make them:
http://www.appledolls.org/page2.html

This a traditional American folk art. Something that will be lost if nobody will continue to do it. People pay thousands of dollars for old apple head dolls.
Some say this form of craft is stupid, dumb, hillbilly like and not even art.

So this is only interesting because it was done a hundred years ago?

Hi everyone,
My work is featured in this awesome book, Buy yours today $45 +tax SH from www.joemangrum.com and get a signed copy (personalized if you include your name etc. Its a very timely topic , climate change, funny how nobody is asking about it to our presidential hopefuls??
lets get the word out on climate change!

heres the details

In the environmental realm, science and art are inextricably linked. While science determines how we measure the health of our planet, art allows us to visualize our relationship to the natural world. Art in Action collects creative interpretations of the state of out planet in word and image by seventy-nine artists. These varied pieces express a profound appreciation for all species and landscapes, explore our natural world lost, despaired and reconstructed and describe the fantasy of paradises anew and gone awry.

From the expansive vision of Christo to the enlightened power of Olafur Eliasson, the art speaks to us in as many ways as there are artists. Each chapter asks us to celebrate, reflect, interact, protect and act, demonstrating the vast and rich web of life and the interconnectedness of it all. No book can change the natural world. But these stories and photographs can build awareness, the first critical step in changing our collective story from one that exploits and destroys nature for the benefit of humankind to one that nurtures and values the natural world.

Mia Hanak is the Founding Executive Director of the Natural World Museum, an organization committed to inspiring sustainable culture through the arts in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). She leads the team that produces the innovative Art for the Environment global exhibition series. She has been nominated by the American Association of Museums as a ?Museum Leader for the Next Generation.? She currently resides in San Francisco.

Randy Rosenberg is an artist and has also curated many art collections for international organizations including The World Bank, the International Finance Corporation and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Her traveling exhibitions include: The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama and Envisioning Change; Attitudinal and Climate.

This fall, I visited a one-building town on the far edge of Nevada and took a few snapshots. It had everything that you would want in a desert highway stop--grandma, kids, chickens, cafe, bar, gas, and mounted deer heads.

The pics are up on my Flickr page, http://www.flickr.com/photos/christinaweber , if you'd like to take a look.

Curiosity vs. Creativity

Maybe I have already posted this and forgot...

What is the relationship between curiosity and creativity?

For me curiosity trumps creativity, or at least it should. I see a lot of stuff created by people that has almost zero curiosity in it, just stuff people are cranking out. You can't really have one without the other. If you have a great idea that came from curiosity but never created it...well, so much for the idea. But if you are not thinking about the whys, the whats and the wherefores, the work suffers.

curiosity>creativity

Don't Try To Be Artistic

"The whole philosophy of art is that you don't try to be artistic but you just approach the objects as they are, and then the message comes automatically. You do the same thing in Japanese flower arrangements. You don't try to be artistic; you just chop off certain twigs and certain branches which seem to be out of line with the flow. You just cut them off and then you put the remaining twigs there in the arrangement, and you put the flowers underneath, and it automatically becomes a whole landscape. Similarly, when you look at a painting by a great artist, it doesn't look like someone actually painted it, but it just seemed to happen by itself. There's no gap, no cracks at all. It's one unit, complete."
~Chogyam Trungpa (Buddhist rinpoche/teacher)

Can you truly say you don't try to be artistic when producing what you do?

My answer: I think early on in my career, I may have done things that I THOUGHT were artistic, but, as I have matured, I think I have been working with my own uniquely personal imagery/iconography (in painting and photography) in styles that have moprhed into something identifiably me, that qualifies as "artistic'.

As An Artist, Where Are You On The Scale Of Self-actualization?

"Psychologist Abraham Maslow has written, 'A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write--if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. What one can be, one must be.' The question for many would-be creators is simply how to get to "must.

Maslow spent a lifetime researching mental health and human potential. He emphasized the study of healthy minds and successful systems rather than the abnormal and the ill. He was particularly interested in the hierarchy of needs, meta-needs, self-actualizing persons, purposeful play, and peak experiences. Leader of the humanistic school of psychology, he
referred to his ideas as a "third force"--beyond Freudian theory and behaviourism.

Maslow saw human beings' needs arranged like a ladder. The most basic needs, at the bottom, were physical--air, water, food, etc. Then came safety needs--security, stability, comfort. Then psychological or social needs--belonging, love, acceptance. At
the top were the self-actualizing needs--the need to fulfill oneself, to become all that one is capable of becoming. Maslow felt that unfulfilled needs lower on the ladder inhibited a person from climbing to the next step. For example, someone dying of thirst is not likely to write or paint. People who managed the higher needs are what he called self-actualizing people. These folks, he found, are able to focus on problems outside themselves, have a clear sense of what is true and what is phony, and are spontaneous, creative, and not bound too strictly by social conventions.

Here are a few of Maslow's ideas for artists wishing to further evolve:

Systematically study, understand and neutralize the effects of lower needs. Accept the world in all of its complexity, mystery and ambiguity. Take cues from the winners in this world, not the losers. Keep the company of the doers, not the talkers. Play your personal game on as many levels as you're able. Fall in love with your processes, innovations, dreams and higher ideals. Be sensitive to and welcome the arrival of peak experiences. Have no guilt when you see yourself becoming compulsive and proactive. Allow yourself to be swept up in your personal "must."

PS: "Where was the human potential lost? How was it crippled? A good question might be not why do people create, but why do people not create?" (Abraham Maslow, 1908-1970)

Esoterica: Peak experiences are profound moments of love, understanding, happiness or rapture, when a person feels more whole, alive, self-sufficient and yet a part of the world--more aware of truth, justice, harmony and goodness. Maslow found self-actualizing people have many such peak experiences. Acts of art can be structured so an individual sets himself up for a series of them. He feels good, becomes habituated and demands their repetition. Maslow was not a snob about his conclusions. "A first-rate soup," he said, "is more creative than a second-rate painting."

~From Robert Genn bi-weekly newsletter

This resonates with me as an artist and as a transpersonal psychotherapist. I can't imagine an artist producing peak work if he/she is caught in a quagmire of personal neuroses, spiritual emergency or physical debilitation. Do these kinds of difficulties cripple you in any way in producing your art? ~AO

Confirming Our Preconceptions

"While purposeful direction is valuable, artists, true citizens of the world, also need to avoid the cognitive hazard called "confirmation bias," the tendency to search for or interpret information in a way that confirms one's preconceptions." ~R. Genn

As a visual artist, I sometimes have the habit of stumbling across certain images -- either in my own photo reference or in "found" imagery -- that make me think: That looks like one of my paintings. And then I blithely proceed to file it in my reference files and, often proceed to make a painting using it as reference. I think this falls under "confirming my preconceptions". So, rather than thinking outside the box and stretching my conceptual boundaries, I fall prey to painting something comfortable and confirming.

Happen to you?"

Has anybody here had problems with TOU censoring your work... or unsubbing you...
not because of self serving drama like flaming or trolling...
but... Because of the socially unacceptable content of your work ?

That is because it was deemed unseemly... or obscene...
for instance this painting by Michelangelo was taken down several times.

I've just finished a 36" x 54" oil on canvas painting of all of the captains of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team since their inception in the early 1920s (I've been a fan since the early 1960s). And I'm offering copies of a limited edition print of the painting for sale. Go to my site at www.allanomarra.com/ and follow the link to the information page if you are interested in buying one.

Eight months ago, I sold what I could of my personal belongings, packed up the rest and moved out to Texas to manage the armour department of Thaden Ironworks.

http://thadenarmory.com/

In that time, I have managed to make some fairly cool things:

http://www.flickr.com/gp/7220422@N07/78qdG8

...but what was supposed to have been a lucaritive venture, turned out to be a considerable loss.

As fate would have it, the company has been bought out and the armour portion disolved.

As of December 1, I am left with no job, no place to live (part of the original negotiation), and I have not yet figured out where to go.

Even though I lack a formal education, I have been an educator. I have managed crews to a common greatness. However, through it all, I have been an artist. In fact, I have been an artist for so long now, I don't know how to work the mundane.

I thought of looking into colleges with metals programs, but so far I have had very little luck. I can't afford to open up my own shop.

I'm wracking my brain trying to figure out where to go with over twenty years of creative experience, but I think I'm too close to the problem to see it clearly.

That's why I would like to enlist your aid.

Give me ideas, suggestions, clues, anything.

Help me to get my brain thinking in the right direction.

I don't want to end up stuck in a job that does not capitalize on my need to make.

that is the question.

I already have a website, complete with artwork. There's info on upcoming events (not that I have many), links, etc, etc. Lately, some of my artist friends have been getting the push from their artist friends to blog. Show works in progress, talk about process, post comments, etc, etc.

Wouldn't it be better to devote that energy and time to MAKING and FINISHING work than slow down the process? If people have an interest, you can arrange for a studio visit or email them photos.

Dear brothers and sisters,

i study art therapy in Germany and work on the arty part of my diploma at the moment - and i invite you to support my work “ babel“!
Babel is about the try to cancel the moment of disintegration, it is about identity, community,structure and the basic needs of human beings and it is about you as well, when you join this project;
Please send me one article of your clothing, which you don`t need
anymore (it doesn`t matter if there is a mark on it, a cut in it, the
zipper is not working anymore etc.) and a word (in your language, a
word, which you like, which you don`t like, which you use often or
never, it can be a name, too) to this adress :

Sandra Becker
Hunscheidtstraße 162
44789 Bochum
Germany

in case you like to send me more material - like little messages,
infomation about you, your life, your country, the article of clothing
( maybe there is a story about it - you never liked to wear it, it was
a gift, you wore it in an important moment) - i will be pleased about
it.
my plan is to put all together in a new way - so that there will be one dress and one poem at the end for one performance/ film/installation, but it is not clear how it will be exactly - at least the most important thing depends on you. maybe the dress and the poem will go on a journey again, maybe they will come back to you, maybe you get a message from them, maybe you won´t see them again, maybe....the ideas become more and more with every package i get from you what ever will happen - i let you know. and be sure; whenever you give something - you get something.
the artwork will be shown at the diploma exhibition of the FH Ottersberg (Germany) on march 21th 2008.
you will find a documentation on my tribe-blog.

i hope that it will be possible to support me,
looking forward to get a message from you,

Become a part of babel !

Drawing

"...These days drawing still suffers from the anti-tradition sentiment that has been with us for a few decades. Many art schools are only now getting back to teaching the subject... ...Another problem is that many collectors still don't see stand-alone drawing as a collectible. It's unfortunate, because drawing has its own unique delight for both the doer and the viewer. Let's face it, drawing skills have largely fallen on hard times. A few years ago it was nearly a dead art. Lots of folks still think they don't need it.

While painting can often be brought back and upgraded by a strong shot of desire, it's been my experience that drawing, not practiced, soon becomes rusty. Ordinary drawing is okay and useful, but above all it's an opportunity for "line style." Expressive, searching, definitive, linear, broken, lost and found, there's an energy in line that tone and form do not have. In drawing, artists have to determine whether the objects or ideas drawn are suitable for line--or would they be best suited for mass and area. For subjects with what I call "inner glow," such as faces and the nuances of nature, line can take second place. Think of trying to stretch a coat hanger around a cloud. But line is of value for its own sake and can carry its own meaning. Paul Klee noted that "a line is a dot that went for a walk." More creators and more collectors need to be taken on that walk. Edgar Degas noted, "Drawing is a species of writing: it reveals, better than does painting, an artist's true personality." A student who sees progress in drawing gains the greatest self-esteem. For that reason alone artists ought to be drawing like crazy. When Michelangelo died, a note for one of his assistants was found on the studio floor: "Draw, Antonio, draw. Draw and do not waste time."

Best regards,

Robert

PS: "Do not fail to draw something every day, for no matter how little, it will do you a world of good." (Cennino Cennini) "You can never do too much drawing." (Tintoretto) "There is nothing so delightful as drawing." (Vincent Van Gogh) "You never graduate from drawing." (John Sloan)"

We are asking artists (who can use stairs) to use the Hooker entrance.

The event is taking place in the Great Hall on the Second Floor of the State House.

History

In early 2007, a State House Artist Working Group was formed to explore how the Commonwealth of Massachusetts could better support the artist community and how to foster a direct dialog with individual artists working in all disciplines. The Working Group was founded by key staff members of the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts and Cultural Development, the Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies, the Financial Education Division of the State Treasurer's Office, and the Artists Foundation. In June 2007, the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development joined the working group.

The Working Group's first public event "Artists Under the Dome: Discover how the Commonwealth fosters creativity", was held on May 17th 2007. It was a brown bag lunch gathering and networking event at the State House. The State Treasurer, Timothy P. Cahill, welcomed the artists to the State House. Over 40 artists attended the meeting.

Inspired by the attendance and enthusiasm of the artists attending this event, the Working Group realized how important it would be to create an annual event in which the Commonwealth invited individual artists of all disciplines to the State House. It also became clear that a direct dialog between State policy makers and the artist community was mutually beneficial and resulted with great ideas on how to improve and better support the State's artist community.

The Working Group members began working over the summer and fall to plan the first annual "Artists Under the Dome" event for November 8, 2007. It is hoped this annual event will grow each year and will help to make Massachusetts one of, if not the best, State in the Nation for artists of all disciplines.

The Working Group' s informal motto is: "We are going to have fun and get a lot done!"

ArtistsUndertheDome.org- this website- was launched in October 2007. It is an artist run website that is privately funded. This website strives to inform Massachusetts artists of the State House Artist Working Group's efforts and also helps to keep artists informed of Statewide efforts and public policy initiatives that may impact their livelihoods. This site acts a resource and tool for individual artists. Our goal is to empower individual artists to become more engaged with the democratic process and public policy making. We fully endorse the Artists Foundation's Citizen Artist Campaign!

Creative Intelligence

From R. Genn's biweekly newsletter:

"....I realize there are two main kinds of artists. Those who think it's all about technique, methodology and process, and those who think all you have to do is "wing it." The latter, sort of like skydivers without benefit of parachutes, are all over the place these days. Attitudes of "anything goes," "anybody can do it," and "I can do what I want as long as it has 'heart'" prevail. While I'm a first-line advocate for intuition, just to make things difficult I have to tell you there's something else we need to think about. It's called "Creative Intelligence."

In our game, this brand of intelligence is as valuable as IQ is to Ph.D. "CI" represents another kind of "knowing." Not surprisingly, artists with a high CI know when to use their intuition. Knowing when to jump may be the highest calling.

But folks in the high CI category also know when to go for the nuts and bolts. It's been my observation that CI comes easily to some--they seem to be born with it. Others have to work hard to get it. Creative intelligence knows:

When to pause and rethink
When to dream different dreams
When to learn more about a subject
When to reject and restart
When to take a rest or shut down

The high CI artist also knows:
How to prime the pump
How to search and find
How to control the medium
How to let the medium control the art
How to accomplish specialized manoeuvres
How to coax ideas into crossbreeding

CI actually requires a long list that is custom made and held close to the chest of the individual artist. Furthermore, there's no known method of administering a CI test--except perhaps realizing the outcome of self-anointed "professionalism." But even that's too narrow. Peer approval might be a more reasonable test. Or peer admiration. If there ever was a test, covert peer admiration might just do the trick.

PS: "It's all those years of cognitive learning and study that lead to what many refer to as 'intuitive' painting, but they forget the intellectual process that got them to the point where painting became a fluid, natural act." (Coulter Watt)

Esoterica: Creative intelligence also involves the simultaneous use of mind and spirit. Whether mind before spirit or spirit before mind, retrofitting and deconstructing spirit is the
habit of our age. Perhaps the evolved CI guy is best at thinking it out first, then making the leap of faith, then covering tracks. "I throw a spear into the darkness. That is intuition. Then I must send an army into the darkness to find the spear. That is intellect." (Ingmar Bergman)"

Are you about methodology, or about intuition, or a little of both?

I went into the business for the money, and the art grew out of it. If people are disillusioned by that remark, I can't help it. It's the truth."

~Charlie Chaplin

I have an art show in progress right now that is very personal art, title: 'Moments of Awakening' and have not sold anything yet, only one piece of 22 offered on 'hold".
See work and opening at tthese links:
www.facebook.com/album.php
www.facebook.com/album.php

I have always painted exactly what moves me, wiithout any consideration for commenrcail success -- and have done OK with selling, but certainly not ever enough to make a livelihood. Now that I'm approaching a point where I need to make a livelihood from making art (my job was eliminated in corporate downsizing), I'm thinking hard about coming up with some kind of "commercial" line of painting. So, will that be like what Charlie reveals here? Or should I stick to my "personal stuff" and damn the torpedos? Any parallel experiences out there?

Oct. 9, John Lennon's B'day - Imagine Peace

http://www.imaginepeace.com/

On October 9th 2007, Yoko Ono will unveil the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER on Videy Island, Reykjavik, Iceland.
Dedicated to the memory of her late husband John Lennon on what would have been his 67th birthday, the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER will shine as a beacon for World Peace.

Sponsored by the City of Reykjavik, the Reykjavik Art Museum and Reykjavik Energy, the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER will be surrounded by more than 495,000 PEACE WISHES from people worldwide that the artist has collected since 1981 as part of her interactive Wish Tree exhibits.
The wishes will be stored in capsules and buried surrounding the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER.

Yoko Ono invites you to join her and thousands of others by sending your PEACE WISHES to the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER for October 9th.

A dream you dream alone is only a dream
A dream you dream together is reality
Yoko Ono

Imagine all the people living life in peace.
John Lennon

To send your wishes:

Email: click here.

Post: IMAGINE PEACE TOWER, P.O. Box 1009, 121 Reykjavik, Iceland.

I hope the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER will give light to the strong wishes of World Peace from all corners of the planet and give encouragement, inspiration and a sense of solidarity in a world now filled with fear and confusion.
Let us come together to realize a peaceful world.

Yoko Ono

The IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is a work of art conceived by Yoko Ono in memory of John Lennon.

It is dedicated to peace and bears the inscription 'IMAGINE PEACE' in 24 languages.

Its construction and installation is a collaboration between Yoko Ono, the City of Reykjavik, Reykjavik Art Museum and Reykjavik Energy.

The work is in the form of a wishing well from which a very strong and tall tower of light emerges. The strength, intensity and brilliance of the light tower continually changes as the particles in the air fluctuate with the prevailing weather and atmospheric conditions unique to Iceland.

Every year it will light up between October 9th (Lennon's birthday) and December 8th (the day of his death).

In addition the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER will be lit on New Year's Eve, during the first week of spring and on some rare special occasions agreed between the City and Ono.

The electricity for the light comes entirely from the Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant.

A hypothetical situation

Let's say I took a photo from flickr.com or some similar site. And then tweaked the color/resolution/size etc. of said photo. Is this copyright infringement?

I see it as similar to taking a photo of something with a camera. Taking an entity and tweaking it whether with computer or camera.

So for that hypothetical situation would I get in trouble?

The New Art of Art Finance

Following the announcement by a spokesman of Mr. Hirst's gallery that "For the Love of God" had been sold for $100 million at the very end of August, a new question has been added: Did it really sell? The terms of the deal were unprecedented: It was bought by an unnamed investment firm, with Mr. Hirst retaining an undisclosed ownership stake in the artwork. Now, many commentators question the reality of the transaction. Whether the sale was real or fictive, we may never know. Indeed, the general suspicion that those with a vested interest in a particular artist are prepared to either drive up the auction price or invent a nonexistent transaction for the sake of creating the perception of success is as old as the art market...

Hi,

We are Ad Astrea Press. We are sort of a poor relation to Harwood Information Technology Services. By Monday we will be up and running on HITX servers. (Goodbye Bravehost.) We will be offering writers and artists epublishing services including web design, encryption (our patented system) and promotion.

The Voices in Our Heads grew out of an artist's egroup I founded on Yahoo which simply refuses to die. I resurrected some of the characters from Igor's place. We are offering all of our contributers space on the Zine to showcase a drawing, story or poem with a link back to their site. If you are selling your own work on your own site, great. We will put the link on our Zine and on Igor's If you need a place to sell your work, we will provide you free space on Igor's Place. If you sell enough stuff we will even give you your own page. Or we will design a website for you and host it and manage it for you. (A list of fees are available.)

If you would like to get more involved with the project and meet other Igorians, we have left Yahoo (the fascists) and we can be found @
tribes.tribe.net/rogue_mammals

Thank you for your interest.

hey y'all-

I'm the adult education coordinator for an arts nonprofit in the mission, Root Division. Our fall schedule starts this week, and we have some amazing classes- here are a few:

Painting with Acrylics
Intro to Oil Painting
Drawing from the imagination

though one class I'm particularly excited about is not actually a technique class. It's called Stealing Time, and it's about creating the space in your life for your art practice (be it visual arts, music, writing, anything).

check out our offerings and sign up at www.rootdivision.org/adulted_current.html

and if you have any questions email me at adult ed at root division dot org

"Evolution of the Ukulele" Exhibit at SF's Museum of Craft and Folk Art

This summer, the aloha spirit is alive in San Francisco as the Museum of Craft and Folk Art presents the exhibition Evolution of the Ukulele: The History of Hawaii’s Jumping Flea. The exhibition explores the folk tradition and fine craft of the Hawaiian ukulele (the word means “jumping flea” in Hawaiian), which is in the midst of a huge international revival. Played by amateurs far beyond Hawaii who are joining ukulele clubs throughout the U.S., Great Britain, Australia and Japan, the ukulele revival is even showing up on YouTube in performances by professional musicians from Bruce Springsteen to the Jimi Hendrix of the Ukulele, ”Hawaiian Jake Shimabukuro, who will perform in San Francisco in September in conjunction with this exhibition.

Evolution of the Ukulele will be on view at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art at 55 Yerba Buena Lane in downtown San Francisco from August 2 through October 21, 2007. For more information call (415) 227-4888 or visit www.mocfa.org.

The exhibition is the centerpiece for the first-ever San Francisco Ukulele Festival, September 7 and 8, 2007. The festival features two days of performances at Herbst Theater and at the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival. Headlining the San Francisco Ukulele Festival will be the artistry of Jake Shimabukuro, in concert at Herbst Theater on Friday, September 7. The uke-fest continues at Yerba Buena Gardens on Saturday, September 8, from 11am to 4pm, featuring “uke-centric” music of all styles as local musicians perform Hawaiian music, tin pan alley favorites, and uke-driven contemporary pop and country, and sing-alongs with prominent Bay Area ukulele clubs.

Evolution of the Ukulele: The History of Hawaiis Jumping Flea”provides an in-depth history of how a small group of Portuguese immigrants brought the little guitar-like Madeiran machte to Honolulu in 1879, sparking creation of a new and uniquely Hawaiian instrument and sound. The ukulele’s popularity took turn-of-the-century Hawaii by storm, and then swept across the United States, Canada and Great Britain through the early 1900s. As accompaniment to Hawaiian, Hawaiian-inspired, and Tin Pan Alley music, the ukulele resurfaced in the 1950s to inspire everyone from Elvis to the Beatles.

The exhibition will include some of the finest ukuleles ever crafted, including historic 19th-century Hawaiian koa-wood instruments, and new designs created by today’s best ukulele makers. The exhibition is accompanied by samples of over a century of ukulele music, ukulele performances, demonstrations of ukulele production, a hands-on area where visitors can pick up and play a ukulele, and colorful historic sheet music covers from the teens and twenties with titles such as Give “Me a Ukulele” (and a ukulele baby) and “Leave the Rest to Me,” ”Ukulele Lady, ”Ukulele Baby, ”and “Say it With a Ukulele.”
Group appropriation project

Here is an idea for a group project.

I will upload a photo I found on Flickr. The photo, I named Green Warhol, will be the starting point. We all have one week (August 21st - August 28th) to tweak this photo in anyway and then post the results of our endeavors.

What the finishing point is, I have no idea. How the photo is manipulated is up to you. We are all stepping out the same front door, but where we end up....

Good Art Is What Sells?

From Robert Genn, again:

"In a recent interview, the wildly successful film director Brett Ratner said, "It's more difficult to make a commercial film that works than a pretentious art movie." Unfortunately,
the more successful his work, the more the poor fellow is put down by the critics. Such hits as "Rush Hour," "Red Dragon" and "X-Men 3" are panned. I'm not saying they're good (or bad) movies; I'm saying they're his movies. We're not talking about relative value; we're talking about relative difficulty. Ratner likes a challenge. He feels his talent is for action, suspense, and the kind of visual energy and complex plot it takes to hold viewers. He probably agrees with Andy Warhol: "Good art is what sells." Ratner's observation about commercial films expresses a central dilemma in all the arts.

It may be the degree of difficulty that holds the interest of many realistic and figurative painters. These artists often see abstraction and conceptual work as arbitrary and lightweight. To quote a common complaint that comes into my inbox, they find it "too easy." They are, rather, drawn to developing traditional notions of composition, drawing, colour and subject-specific knowledge. They realize these sorts of skills are achieved by practice, self-training, and sustained effort. While not demeaning the challenges of abstract work, when meaning and sensibility are added to the conservative mix the task becomes doubly daunting.
Degree of difficulty may just be an artist's best friend. Think of the struggle evident in the work of Rembrandt--light, chiaroscuro, composition and surface quality, all mixed with
psychological power that grabs."
The Mark of Genius

"When realized artists work on their production, they are completely filled with what they are doing. At that level, a person doesn't have any other mind than being an arist, 100%. Complete concentration is involved when somebody is executing a work of art. That is the mark of a master. The mark of genius is none other than that you put 100% of your being into the situation, and you can do so. It turns out to be seemingly almost accidental, as in Shakespeare's work, especially his early work. He was almost to the level of being a hero by mistake, by a very fortunate mistake. In a positive sense, such a mistake is possible. It involves a lot of power and concentration as well. So we are talking about a sense of contact, a sense of concentration, and a sense of mindlessness when a person is executing a work of art of writing poetry. At the time that you are writing poetry, you don't think. You just do it."
~Chogyam Trungpa

Is he right: complete concentration is genius? Or is it DNA, etc.?
