THAT EVENING
A few men and 40 dancers sat in a circle cleansing themselves with holy smoke and rosewater. It was hot. Floor fans blew hot air through the wide, open room. Goat skin lanterns made shadows and pools of amber light as sounds of a steady drum and a primitive flute called us to trance. Sweet smoke mixed with anticipation. It was all an experiment. And then it happened. The story of the penis thieves was told. No one knew what to make of it? Some giggled. Others puzzled. Others seemed to grok. But it was fun and thought-provoking. And people bonded as they talked about it. The story of the penis thieves was an instant cult classic. It had to be a tribe.
