This is such a challenge for me. I tried Asharah's video for the first time a week or so ago, and it's SO GOOD for me, because just holding your arms up is a real workout! If I can keep them up and out like her the whole time in a month or so I'll be a happy girl, for now, I'm feeling the burn!!!

Improving my techinque and stage prescence. Yes, arms are always an issue. Must work on arms. Expanding my arsenal of moves. As always, absorbing as much knowledge as I can. I hope to attend a few workshops in the coming year.

Doing isolation's (crisp and clean) while traveling. I can rock a hip square standing still, but when walking forward or back? Ummm....yeah.....

          It's been my new focus.

Oh yeah, and turns. Wanna work on turns.

My current obsession is layering two different time signatures at the same time. I'm working on a 3/4 with my hips with a 7/8 on top with chest locks. I want to be able to do a Moroccan "heel, toe, toe" step in 3/4 or 6/8 with hip work and torso isolations on top in various other meters. Now just to find the music that does this... besides Neil Peart drum solos.

Oh yes, and those darn 3/4 shimmies on the down. They frighten me, not the way clowns and mimes do, but because my rear doesn't cooperate. It's a total mutiny. One day I shall overcome.

Less self criticism...I need to give myself the space to experiment with movements and learn from those experiments whether they produce anything I can use in my dancing or not (and regardless of how ridiculous I might think I look). I want to not have my self criticism stand in my way of exploration of the vast world of dance and the world in general. This will be a lifelong goal/practice I suspect.

More expressive poi spinning...this would be my mid term goal. Make my poi spinning more of an extension of dance and myself. This requires practice of technique and a little bit of my goal above since experimentation will be vital...and a lot of bruises and hits to the face with my poi.

Getting to dance practice next week...that is my short term since anything can happen in this world!

While in Egypt we saw a fabulous dancer doing a drum solo on top of a tabla. I've seen Tito do it on video- he was fabulous- but there was something particularly inspiring seeing it live (plus the dancer was just fabulous). So...when I returned I asked my husband if I could adopt his old tabla - yay! He said yes.
This Saturday was the first time I did it. Considering I had only 2 hours of sleep the night before, and it was at the last of 4 gigs, it was an extra challenge. BUT, it felt like it went really well. So I just accomplished a goal of doing a tabla solo on a tabla.
Next goals include - editing some music, working on more of Yasmin's shimmies (she's working on killer and EFFECTIVE drills), practicing with ghawazee style sagat (zills), which are quite different from the style we use in America. Working on new folklore duet stuff. Other techniques include some traveling shimmies, more assaya, more practicing on top of tabla, adjusting costumes... It's never ending.

My immediate dance goal is to train for and get through an SS L2 weeklong and pass the certification exam.

I'd like to choreograph more. I find that I dance best with choreography. I've been mainly an improvisational dancer since I started performing in restaurants over 13 years ago, and I'm getting bored with myself and my limited repertiore of moves that I "think of" on the spot.

If I choreograph more, I'll feel more confident when I perform and more of my personality can come through, rather than the slightly panicked, frenetic feeling I have when I'm improvising.

I also want to work on my personality when I dance. I have never smiled enough when I perform, and even though people tell me they enjoy my performances, I need to emote more and LOOK like I'm enjoying myself when I dance. This goes hand in hand with more planning and choreography. This, too, could be a life-long mission for me.

You'll totally be able to pass the L2, Willow! :) You can do it!

Thanks! I'm not so much worried about the test, but the 4 days before that... I got my a$$ handed to me in NJ last month. If I can live through the 5 days of the workshop, I'm sure I'll pass the test.

When one of "our" girls came back from L2 in April, she said she better have passed the test because she doesn't ever want to go through that again.

"Suck it up, chicky." THAT'S what I'm worried about...

    Hi. Neeewbie here...
I'm Ma'isah fro Raqs Hothique in Melbourne Australia. G'day!

    Fantastic question!!

I am looking to going back to training in two or three different styles, (and I'm in Melb Australia) so I think - in order, Tribal Fusion with Melusina at www.underbellydance.com, Egyptian cabaret with Mellisa Christini at www.hiptohip.com.au and Egyptian/Nubian folkloric dance with Maria Sangiorgi at www.dancingisis.com. (sorry, don't mean to be a plug whore just not sure anyone outside of Aust will know who they are.

I want to improve my core stability and posture (22+ years of heardressing messes with your spine), get some delicious poise and improve my expressions (I clench my jaw, hAwt - not) and get a strong connected fluid style that is still crisp and crunchy when called for.

As a green-belly, just getting the basics down to the point where I can 3/4 shimmy without thinking to myself "1-2-3; 1-2-3", LOL.

In other words, I want to develop the type of muscle memory that would allow me to dance for the sake of dancing and not having to second-guess every move I make.

Short-term goal? Finally getting to nail a few turns...something I was truly incapable of doing pre-foot surgery. Wow, what a difference! Now I'm turn/spin obsessed.

I have been at this for a year now and still concider myself a beginner. 1-2-3- 1-2-3- 1-2-3- spazzzzzzzzzzzzz-thatz me as far as the 3/4 shimmy. I could almost scream. I can't spin without my head spinning too, however, I do have some things I'm kinda good at. MAYBE! My dance goals? I don't know--I don't know. Is that bad? All I do know is that I love it. I love knowing I DO have control over MY body and I know that over the last year I have turned off that inner voice in my head that told me not to bother because I wasn't good enough. I know that. I'm on a journey here-loving the ride.
