Is the Modern Tribal Bellydance DVD a good way to prepare for a Suhaila intensive?

I'm going to the 3-day Level 1 in my area in November and it was suggested that I buy Suhaila's DVDs or subscribe to her online classes to help me prepare for the work there. I'm on a tight budget though (I have to save money for the workshop!) and my copy of Modern Tribal Bellydance just arrived in the mail.

I know that Asharah is Suhaila format certified and I read a lot of reviews of the DVD saying that many of the drills are drawn from Suhaila's exercises so if anyone here has been to one of the intensives and also is familiar with ASharah's DVD I would appreciate your opinion on whether working consistently with the DVD would be good preparation.

Thanks!

  • I would say yes, somewhat. Asharah's drills classes & the drills section of her DVD teach the movements you would be doing in the workshop (in the manner Suhaila would teach them) though a lot of Suhaila's workshop time is spent drilling those movements around the room over various foot patterns & timing (which is the exhausting & mind-bending part). I can't remember if this DVD talks about Suhaila's timing "language," though. That's really important to know. From the basic, how-to-execute-the-moves in a Suhaila-style manner, I would say yes. It will help build up a little bit of the endurance you'll need to survive the weekend, too.

By the way, coming from someone whose endurance wasn't really that high, I'd recommend doing some serious cardio a few days a week starting soon, if you don't already. Those level-specific workshops are a KILLER! Have fun!
    • I've worked my way through the DVD over the past couple days and holy God that s*** is brutal. If it doesn't get me in shape for the intensive I have a hard time imagining what would!

I'm not even close to being able to do the whole workout or all of the reps -- right now I break it into segments, focusing either on my lower or upper body, and I do as many reps as I can and then remain in mountain or tree pose until the next exercise. (This is in addition to the light rehearsal I'm doing every day for my regular classes.)

I really look forward to seeing my ability increase.

      Cardio. Got it. Thanks!
