Tuesday Nights
Joy of Motion Atlas Arts Center. 1333 H St NE, Washington, DC.

The class will focus on core strength, isolations, musical interpretation, and improvisation. Alongside the breakdown and drilling of movements, we will create a comfortable and challenging space to move with intuition and expression. Special attention will be placed on each student’s level and learning style. Students will also explore the historical context and development of Tribal Belly Dance through videos and handouts. Finger cymbals will be introduced. For more what makes tribal style unique, visit www.tribalbellydance.org

Technique builds from week to week through structured drilling exercises based on the Suhaila Salimpour format.* Students will also develop strong posture, arm positions, hip work, torso isolations, and basic foot patterns specific to the tribal style. This class follows an organized approach to building the basic elements of tribal and is perfect for students who have never been exposed to tribal belly dance. *Asharah is not an official instructor for the Suhaila Salimpour School of Dance, but Suhaila Salimpour has given permission for Asharah to use the Suhaila Salimpour format in her classes.

~Modern Tribal Performance Class: 7:15pm – 8:15pm. $250 for 14 weeks~
The Performance Class Workshop series offers students the opportunity to participate in developing and refining group choreography for a stage performance. Choreographies are created using the movements from their corresponding Technique and Drills classes. Performance Class Workshops will feature each class’s choreography in Winter Dance Concert at Signature Theater on Saturday, December 13. Students enrolled in a Performance Class Workshop are required to be concurrently enrolled in a Saffron Technique and Drills class.
This class will work to develop core strength, stamina, isolations, and musical interpretation. Class work emphasizes the breakdown and drilling of each element. Students will incorporate technique and movement into traveling and combinations with a focus on execution and precision.

I'm going to the 3-day Level 1 in my area in November and it was suggested that I buy Suhaila's DVDs or subscribe to her online classes to help me prepare for the work there. I'm on a tight budget though (I have to save money for the workshop!) and my copy of Modern Tribal Bellydance just arrived in the mail.

I know that Asharah is Suhaila format certified and I read a lot of reviews of the DVD saying that many of the drills are drawn from Suhaila's exercises so if anyone here has been to one of the intensives and also is familiar with ASharah's DVD I would appreciate your opinion on whether working consistently with the DVD would be good preparation.
Thanks!

...spend a little extra money and take one of Asharah's one-on-one private lessons. The workshop was just great--a lot of hard work (but not, "Oh God, all I want is a Vicodin and a double margarita...preferably in traction" kind of hard work...been there...), a lot of fun and a lot of excellent advice. Lisa Zahiya helped Asharah create a very welcoming, friendly environment and Asharah was very encouraging and "user-friendly"...I sometimes am too intimidated to ask questions, but Asharah was so approachable that I pretty much bombarded her, haha.

But, as great as the workshop was (and the Hafla. Wow. I knew Asharah was God, but I was *very* impressed by the other dancers too), I learned soooo much from the private, one-on-one lesson. Yeah, it's extra money and who can afford that these days, but I'm tellin' ya...it's worth it. I have very special issues because of a health condition and the ensuing major surgery on my foot. After explaining my condition, she examined what I was doing and found that a lot of my problems were due to improper alignment (including not bending my stork legs, LOL), changed the direction of my turns and gave me many other tips.

At the time--we're talking yesterday, here--I was pretty clumsy, trying to dance in front of God and all, but I've been practicing this morning using her tips and my God, what a difference! I'll admit, I sort of winced counting my money beforehand, but I walked away feeling that it was money well-spent.

Again, I know times are hard, but--especially if you want to be a serious dancer--a private lesson with an instructor of Asharah's caliber is more than worth it. Trust.

Thanks Asharah!

In this workshop, Asharah wll lead students through an intense warm up and then will show students how to break down traditional bellydance movements such as vertical hip figure-8s, shoulder rolls, torso undulations, turns, and warm waves into smaller and sharper parts to give your performances a robotic and creepy edge.

This class is for all drums and percussion so bring what you have and is open to all skill levels.
Asharah
The Cymbalist Movement: Integrating Finger Cymbals into Your Dance $36.00
Finger cymbals are an integral part of American Tribal Style bellydance, and can be a lovely accompaniment to a solo performance. However, many dancers often feel daunted by cymbal playing and have been using them less and less… Finger cymbals aren’t scary, and this workshop will help you approach cymbals as an instrument and as a way to enhance your performance. With the right exercises, anyone can play cymbals and dance! Asharah will lead you through an intense warm up, teach drills that layer movements and cymbal playing, introduce common cymbal patterns found in Middle Eastern music, and teach a short dance combination focusing on the playing of your cymbals with the music and your movements.
3:00-5:00
This workshop explores isolating multiple parts of the body simultaneously and applies the technique to musicality. Strength and safety for moving up, down and around during floorwork will also be covered. And learn a couple combinations that can be easily integrated into any dance choreography. Bring a sword or tray for an extra challenge.
SHAKRA

This workshop will also observe ways we lose physical and mental energy that affects endurance and performance. Be prepared to be worked from head to toe so bring Schmatorade (half water, half Gatorade) or your favorite thirst quencher.
Drummer Composition Workshop $36.00

You will also learn about odd beats such as 5, 7 & 9 and how to create your own rhythms too. This class is for all drums and percussion so bring what you have and is open to all skill levels.
3:00-5:00
3:00-5:00
Elizabeth Strong
Strengthening, Layering and Floorwork $36.00
Have you ever wished that you had more technique at your fingertips to express the rhythms and melody of the music?
This workshop explores isolating multiple parts of the body simultaneously and applies the technique to musicality. Strength and safety for moving up, down and around during floorwork will also be covered. And learn a couple combinations that can be easily integrated into any dance choreography. Bring a sword or tray for an extra challenge.
The Cymbalist Movement: Integrating Finger Cymbals into Your Dance
Experience Level: Intermediate beginner and above.
April 19, 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Finger cymbals are an integral part of American Tribal Style bellydance, and can be a lovely accompaniment to a solo performance. However, many dancers often feel daunted by cymbal playing and have been using them less and less… Finger cymbals aren't scary, and this workshop will help you approach cymbals as an instrument and as a way to enhance your performance.

April's Alternacirque show will be graced with two of Washington D.C.'s finest alternative performers: Tribal Bellydancer Asharah is returning to the Art Bar stage, and we are absolutely thrilled to have dancer, fire performer and sideshow queen Mab, Just Mab bringing her vaudeville hilarity along for the ride. On Friday, April 24th, both performers will join us at Art Bar for our 9:30 show. 1211 Park St. in downtown Columbia, SC, no cover, the bar is 21+ but we're hopefully performing outside, barring bad weather.

And since they'll be in town anyway, we figured we would pick their professional brains about their craft while they were here. In other words, WORKSHOPS!

Workshops take place on Saturday, April 25th. We're in the process of confirming location, but it's likely to be at the Lexington Old Mill. More information as it comes.

Join Asharah for three hours of intense practice aimed at polishing your bellydance technique and building strength and stamina. Asharah is known for her clean technique and muscular execution , and in this workshop she will share with you tips and tricks for sharpening hard movements like hip work and chest locks and for deepening and intensifying smooth movements like undulations and Mayas. She will also share with you a few of her signature robotic movements to add spice to your bellydance movement vocabulary.

This class covers how to build a "bit", and then how to take the bits and build a set and a show! We will also develop a toolbox of elements to get the most out of your audience, heckler handling techniques, and much much more. All performers welcome, not just bellydancers. If you're a sideshow artist, fire eater, hula hooper, host, emcee, poet, magician or improv comedian, come along and improve your presentation.

Sought after for her concise instruction, Asharah teaches belly dance around the world. She is highly regarded for her emphasis on clean technique as well as the individual attention she pays each student in each of her classes and workshops. She believes in addressing each student as an individual, highlighting their strengths and identifying areas of improvement.

Asharah will bring the following workshops to St. Louis:

Saturday June 27th - 10 am until noon

Pops, Locks, and Tick Tocks: Tricks to Mechanize your Movement
Experience Level: Intermediate beginner and above.

Inspired by robots, experimental electronic music, and poppin’ and lockin’, Asharah has integrated mechanical movements into her expressive tribal fusion performances. In this workshop, Asharah will lead students through an intense warm up and then will show students how to break down traditional bellydance movements such as vertical hip figure-8s, shoulder rolls, torso undulations, turns, and arm waves into smaller and sharper parts to give your performances a robotic and creepy edge. After drilling these movements, she’ll teach a short combination that demonstrates how these movements can be used in a performance. She’ll also briefly discuss concepts of electronic music, how it is created, and how to listen to the nuances of music made by machines and computers.

Saturday June 27th - 1pm until 3pm

Dancing Your Demons: Dramatic Dance through Emotional Expression (This workshop is SOLD OUT at Tribal Fest 09!!)
Experience Level: Intermediate beginner and above.

Within each one of us is our true, instinctual self, and we often ignore or repress her (or him) in our everyday lives. Our instinctual self is not rational, and yet to dance to our fullest, we must acknowledge our instinct, acting upon it without second-guessing it and while still harnessing it for a clean and stage-worthy performance. Our instincts are raw, untamed and absolutely essential to a dancer who wishes to give a moving and expressive performance.

In this workshop, Asharah will lead students through physical exercises aimed at drawing out instinctual responses to music and other students in class. She will also explain her own emotional preparation process, giving guidelines and tips on how to be “in the moment” before you even take the stage. Students must leave their egos at the door, and judgmental or critical behavior will not be tolerated.

Sunday, June 28th - 10 am until noon

Progressive Raqs*: Technical Bellydance with a Geeky Twist
Experience Level: Intermediate beginner and above.

In this workshop, Asharah will teach some of her signature technical movements while emphasizing grace, fluidity, power, and presence. A self-described geek, she’ll explain the muscles and physiology behind each movement and how each movement can fit in to the larger picture of your dance. She’ll also talk about her sense of artistic and creative integrity, giving you advice and tips for pursuing your own uncompromising path as an artist and dancer. Asharah likes to push herself and her students physically and mentally, so come prepared with water and an open mind.

The performance will be held at the ClubHouse Inn, 1970 Craig Road - Westport (Maryland Heights) on June 27th, 2009. What's SO terrific about this venue is that it's a couple hundred yards from the workshop location.

To get the party started, you're invited to arrive at the ClubHouse at 7:30pm to enjoy catered treats and an inexpensive cash bar (fully stocked). We have reserved most of the main floor AND the outside patio which is beautifully landscaped. Dance performances will begin at 8pm. Then there will be FIRE!!! (I have to feed my pyro appetite!)

If you are interested in performing in one or both segments of the show, please PM me for the deets. As you can imagine, there are special requirements to meet wrt fire tools, insurance, etc.

I can personally attest to Tempest's unique and insightful approach to being not only a performer but also an artist on stage. I'm really looking forward to learning her approaches to bringing art to life through dance... if you're a performing dancer, particularly if you're blending theater into your dance, you don't want to miss this!

Tempest is the woman who made gothic bellydance a worldwide phenomenon. She developed the original Gothic Bellydance Resource online, and she is an inspiration for myriad dancers around the world (including myself).

Workshops will be followed by a ritual dance dedication by Tempest celebrating friend, dancer, and artist Kaihea at the Palace of Wonders.
Well... I started the blog as a means of expressing my thoughts, opinions, and ideas about belly dance, and to my surprise, it's gathering a bit of a following.

Never say that nothing cool ever happens in Columbia. Ever.

Four of the finest Tribal Bellydance acts on the east coast, ranging from old school to new school, gothic to vaudeville, appear together at Art Bar (1211 Park Street in the Vista) on Saturday, January 17th. This is shaping up to be an absolutely killer show, and I'm so excited to be bringing these acts to Columbia, SC. DO NOT MISS THIS ONE!

Performances start at 9 PM. For the mere cost of $5, you will get to see:

Delirium Tribal from Columbia, SC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pZD0UrCC7w
With its solid foundation in American Tribal Style Bellydance (the original tribal bellydance, for those following along at home), Delirium Tribal does it all: ATS improvisation, Tribal and Tribal Fusion, and even fire and circus arts with Columbia Alternacirque. Delirium will open the show with a classic ATS improv set, and later in the evening we'll show you the new stuff we've been working on: new solos, choreographies and an acrobatic, death-defying, six-person sword choreography that we really hope doesn't kill anybody.

Awalim from Atlanta, GA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GX-LmaEZhVY
East Coast Tribal represent. Awalim was formed in 1999 under the Direction of Ziah Ali McKinney-Taylor as a group to bring World Fusion Tribal Bellydance to the stages of Atlanta and the Southeast US. Awalim's particular flavor of Tribal is decidedly upbeat and earthy while being sophisticated and urban, bringing what they feel are Atlanta's strongest characteristics to the Tribal genre.

Asharah from Alexandria, VA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvgzRKIPShM
Asharah is one of the rising star soloists in Tribal Bellydance. Known for her dark fusion and goth sensibilities, as well as immaculate technique fusing ticking and locking with classic tribal, Asharah's dramatic performances will blow you out of your chair and give you a taste of where Modern Tribal fusion is going.

The Mezmer Society from Asheville, NC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mgpDLQ_9wU
Onca and August had so much fun playing at Art Bar with Alternacirque last July, they are coming back and (I've been told) bringing more musicians. Founded in 2007, the Society fuses diverse elements such belly dance, cabaret performance, Romany music, foppish occultism, unapologetically pretentious Belle Epoque café living, goodwill, bad behavior, misappropriated pop songs, and the horribly misguided notion that one can try and squeeze an entire Balkan brass band into one accordion. And if all of my previous experience with the Mezmer Society holds, they will play and create mayhem all night long. Crazy kids.

The new year is fast approaching, and that means it’s time to register for dance classes for the beginning of next year!

Classes at Joy of Motion: Changes ahead!

1. Big change number one is that nearly all of the classes there are changing to a drop-in format, which means you’ll no longer have to pay for a semester of classes at time. Drop-in classes are great for students who want to continue their dance education, but whose schedules are too busy to commit to a weekly class.
2. Big change number two is that I will now be teaching “Skills and Technique” for all styles of belly dance. This class is aimed to refine students’ technique; build strength, stamina, and flexibility; and expand students’ movement vocabulary through drills.
3. Big change number three is that my classes at Joy of Motion Atlas are moving from Monday nights to Tuesday nights, from 7:30pm - 8:30pm. This gives you plenty of time to get to arrive on time and ready to move!

So, to sum up: Tuesday nights, drop-in class, 7:30pm-8:30pm, Skills and Technique.
Joy of Motion Atlas, 1333 H St NE, Washington, DC. Bring water and a yoga mat.
For more information, visit http://www.joyofmotion.org
---

Classes at Saffron Dance: Modern Tribal Style

I’ll continue to teach two levels of Modern Tribal Style bellydance at Saffron Dance in Arlington, Virginia. Wednesday nights, beginning January 7th. These classes draw from both FCBD-format ATS and the Suhaila Salimpour format.

* Tribal 2: For students who have completed Saffron’s Tribal 1, or have my permission to join. 7:00pm - 8:00pm
* Tribal 3: For students who have completed Tribal 2 with me AND have my permission to join. 8:00pm - 9:00pm

For more information and registration, visit the Saffron Dance website: http://www.saffrondance.com
Saffron Dance is located at 3260 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA, just a 3 minute walk from the Clarendon Metro stop on the Orange line.

Have a very happy holiday season… Hope to see you in class!

Greetings everyone! I just wanted to let you all know that I will be teaching not one, but TWO workshops at Tribal Fest 9 this year. Both workshops are NEW and debuting at Tribal Fest.

Tribal Fest is the largest tribal and fusion festival in the world, and takes place every year in Sebastopol, California (about an hour north of San Francisco and half an hour east of wine country). This year Tribal Fest will run from May 13-17, 2009. Registration is up and available at: http://www.blacksheepbellydance.com/tf9/schedule.html

About the workshops...

Wednesday, May 13th, 10:15am - 12:15pm
Progressive Raqs*: Technical Bellydance with a Geeky Twist

In this workshop, Asharah will teach some of her signature technical movements while emphasizing grace, fluidity, power, and presence. A self-described geek, she'll explain the muscles and physiology behind each movement and how each movement can fit in to the larger picture of your dance. She'll also talk about her sense of artistic and creative integrity, giving you advice and tips for pursuing your own uncompromising path as an artist and dancer. Asharah likes to push herself and her students physically and mentally, so come prepared with water and an open mind.
*Progressive Raqs, a pun on the term Progressive Rock, a music genre that emerged in the early 1970s with bands like Yes, Genesis, and King Crimson taking their experimental cues from the later music of the Beatles. These musicians and bands aimed to lift their music to a higher artistic level, blending classical instrumentation, science fiction and fantasy themes, and virtuoso technicality. Prog rock, as it is often called, has influenced Asharah tremendously as an artist and dancer, as she herself tries to blend her intellectual side with her artistic side through bellydance. She continually strives to challenge herself technically and emotionally in her dance, and, like many prog rock musicians, eschews convention for the sake of her own artistic expression. For more information about this much maligned and often misunderstood music genre, visit: http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_rock

Friday, May 15th, 3:00pm - 5:00pm
Dancing Your Demons: Dramatic Dance through Emotional Expression

Within each one of us is our true, instinctual self, and we often ignore or repress her (or him) in our everyday lives. Our instinctual self is not rational, and yet to dance to our fullest, we must acknowledge our instinct, acting upon it without second-guessing it and while still harnessing it for a clean and stage-worthy performance. Our instincts are raw, untamed, and absolutely essential to a dancer who wishes to give a moving and expressive performance. In this workshop, Asharah will lead students through physical exercises aimed at drawing out instinctual responses to music and other students in class. She will also explain her own emotional preparation process, giving guidelines and tips on how to be "in the moment" before you even take the stage. Students must leave their egos at the door, and judgmental or critical behavior will not be tolerated.

June 21, 1:30pm - 3:20pm
Robot Raqs: Secrets of Ticking, Strobing, and Locking for Tribal Fusion Bellydance.

Inspired by robotic mechanics, experimental electronic music, and poppin' and lockin', Asharah has integrated precise mechanical movements into her expressive tribal fusion performances, a growing trend in tribal fusion dance. In this workshop, Asharah will lead students through a rigorous warm up, and then she'll show students how to break down traditional bellydance movements such as vertical hip figure-8s, shoulder rolls, torso undulations, turns, and arm waves into smaller and sharper parts. Learn how to give your performances a robotic and technical edge!

Raqs America is a weekend-long festival, presented by the Bellydance Superstars, Saffron Dance, and Sahara Dance. The weekend will feature all-day performances, workshops, vending, TWO Saturday night shows, and Bellydance Superstars auditions!

Seriously, I've imagined what I'd like in a program (often because of exercises I've had in live classes), and this is it. This section alone could stand alone as a full-priced DVD, and would be worth the money. "

a workshop for technical and elegant movement for tribal fusion belly dance with Asharah.

This workshop will help you refine your technique and add elegance to your bellydance movement. While sharp pops and locks are an essential part of the tribal dancer's repertoire, grace and polish are equally, if not more, important for conveying expression and feeling from the stage to the audience. Asharah will lead students through an intense warm-up that will prepare the body for fluid arm-work, well-defined isolations, and dramatic extension. We will drill smooth bellydance movements (such as arm waves, interior hip circles, and undulations) and hard contraction movements (such as chest locks and hip work in various directions), and Asharah will teach a short combination using these moves in a choreography, emphasizing flow and musical interpretation.

March 2, Sunday, 2:00-5:00pm

Registration is now up for Tuesday night classes with Asharah at the new Saffron Dance in Arlington, Virginia. Classes begin January 8 and run until April 29th (16 Weeks). I'm really excited to be a part of this beautiful studio, which is dedicated to promoting the art and community of belly dance.

www.saffrondance.com/register/index.html

Tribal 1: Technique and Drills
7:15pm - 8:15pm
This class has been created for dancers seeking to develop the fundamental posture, alignment, and technique for a broad array of tribal belly dance styles, from American Tribal Style (ATS) to its modern fusions. Technique builds from week to week through structured drilling exercises based on the Suhaila Salimpour format* and ATS (group improvisation) created by Carolena Nericcio and FatChanceBellyDance. Students will also develop strong posture, arm positions, hip work, torso isolations, and basic foot patterns specific to the tribal style. This class follows an organized approach to building the basic elements of tribal and is perfect for students who have never been exposed to tribal belly dance. No dance experience is necessary.

Tribal 2: Modern Tribal Combinations
8:15pm - 9:30pm
This class builds on technique developed in Saffron Tribal 1 by using more advanced elements of the Suhaila Salimpour and FatChanceBellyDance formats, as well as Asharah's own signature dance vocabulary. This class will work to develop core strength, stamina, isolations, and musical interpretation. Classwork emphasizes the breakdown and drilling of each element. Students will incorporate technique and movement into traveling and combinations with a focus on execution and precision. A minimum of 6 months prior experience study with Asharah is required for registration.

*Asharah is not an official instructor for the Suhaila Salimpour School of Dance, but Suhaila Salimpour has given permission for Asharah to use the Suhaila Salimpour format in her classes.
