Asharah will be teaching a workshop and performing at the first annual Raqs America, a BDSS event. Asharah will be teaching "Robot Raqs", a guide to mechanical bellydance movement. Registration information on www.raqsamerica.com .

Robot Raqs: Secrets of Ticking, Strobing, and Locking for Tribal Fusion Bellydance.

Inspired by robotic mechanics, experimental electronic music, and poppin' and lockin', Asharah has integrated precise mechanical movements into her expressive tribal fusion performances, a growing trend in tribal fusion dance. In this workshop, Asharah will lead students through a rigorous warm up, and then she'll show students how to break down traditional bellydance movements such as vertical hip figure-8s, shoulder rolls, torso undulations, turns, and arm waves into smaller and sharper parts. Learn how to give your performances a robotic and technical edge!

Raqs America is a weekend-long festival, presented by the Bellydance Superstars, Saffron Dance, and Sahara Dance. The weekend will feature all-day performances, workshops, vending, TWO Saturday night shows, and Bellydance Superstars auditions!

Raqs America will provide the finest instruction in cabaret, tribal, and fusion styles, as well as percussion. Saffron Dance presents Danse Mécanique,
a workshop for technical and elegant movement for tribal fusion belly dance with Asharah.

This workshop will help you refine your technique and add elegance to your bellydance movement. While sharp pops and locks are an essential part of the tribal dancer's repertoire, grace and polish are equally, if not more, important for conveying expression and feeling from the stage to the audience. Asharah will lead students through an intense warm-up that will prepare the body for fluid arm-work, well-defined isolations, and dramatic extension. We will drill smooth bellydance movements (such as arm waves, interior hip circles, and undulations) and hard contraction movements (such as chest locks and hip work in various directions), and Asharah will teach a short combination using these moves in a choreography, emphasizing flow and musical interpretation.

March 2, Sunday, 2:00-5:00pm

Salla Saffron Holiday Party - this Saturday!

This is just a reminder that the Salla Saffron holiday party is this Saturday! Come enjoy festive refreshments and a show featuring Saffron faculty and students. For the tribally inclined, I'll be performing a "dark festive fusion" piece (you know you wanna see me dance to a remix of "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy"), and tribal faculty member Jen Hodge will perform FCBD American Tribal Style with her troupe Sammati. There will also be open dancing for all!

Registration is now up for Tuesday night classes with Asharah at the new Saffron Dance in Arlington, Virginia. Classes begin January 8 and run until April 29th (16 Weeks). I'm really excited to be a part of this beautiful studio, which is dedicated to promoting the art and community of belly dance.

Tribal 1: Technique and Drills
7:15pm - 8:15pm
This class has been created for dancers seeking to develop the fundamental posture, alignment, and technique for a broad array of tribal belly dance styles, from American Tribal Style (ATS) to its modern fusions. Technique builds from week to week through structured drilling exercises based on the Suhaila Salimpour format* and ATS (group improvisation) created by Carolena Nericcio and FatChanceBellyDance. Students will also develop strong posture, arm positions, hip work, torso isolations, and basic foot patterns specific to the tribal style. This class follows an organized approach to building the basic elements of tribal and is perfect for students who have never been exposed to tribal belly dance. No dance experience is necessary.

Tribal 2: Modern Tribal Combinations
8:15pm - 9:30pm
This class builds on technique developed in Saffron Tribal 1 by using more advanced elements of the Suhaila Salimpour and FatChanceBellyDance formats, as well as Asharah's own signature dance vocabulary. This class will work to develop core strength, stamina, isolations, and musical interpretation. Classwork emphasizes the breakdown and drilling of each element. Students will incorporate technique and movement into traveling and combinations with a focus on execution and precision. A minimum of 6 months prior experience study with Asharah is required for registration.

*Asharah is not an official instructor for the Suhaila Salimpour School of Dance, but Suhaila Salimpour has given permission for Asharah to use the Suhaila Salimpour format in her classes.

Yup sure does. Made my butt choke on an ice cube due to an amazing, i mean, AMAZING show this woman put on for us. I have never, ever seen her dance like that and holy hell she blew my arse away!!! All i remember was fighting to get this one ice cube in my mouth and finally when i managed to get it, Asharah broke out some kick arse skills that made my arse loose the ice cube and choke. Teehee. Thank you for putting on an amazing dance for us and i can't wait til the next show!!! XD

I'll be teaching "Pops, Locks, and Tick-Tocks", or as I jokingly call it, "How to bellydance like a robot and still be fluid and elegant." After an intense warm-up, I'll go through a review of basic "round" bellydance movements such as torso undulations, vertical hip figure-8s, and interior hip circles, and then we'll explore how to break up those movements into percussive "micromovements" that create strobing and ratchet effects. We'll also play around with strobing arm waves and full-torso locks. Then we'll learn a short combination to music that combines these sharp and small movements with the snakey and smooth elements of tribal style bellydance. I'll also cover some basic information about electronic music: its history, and how it is made, and how knowing this information can help you listen and dance to breakcore, IDM, and other challenging electronic music genres.

I am incredibly excited about this! (I know, I said that already, but it's true!) I really hope to see some of you there. :D

how do you listen to music? how do you map out a song? especially when you're improving... especially when it's electronic music with no defined verses/choruses or traditional structure...

because one thing that i am always impressed with is your ability to really "know" your music. you are always "one with the music." and that's hard. and it's really nice to watch. so, i wondered if you had some pointers to share with alla us. gracias.

New Winter 2007 classes with Asharah at Joy of Motion's Atlas Studio

It's that time again...

This semester I'll be teaching two classes, a Beginning I and Beginning II (details below). The winter semester begins on January 8th and runs for 12 weeks until March 12th. Both classes are at Joy of Motion's Atlas Center, 1333 H St NE (Please go to NE and not NW or you'll end up at the other side of DC!), Washington, DC.

Tribal Fusion, Beginning I; Focus on Technique and Isolations
Monday nights 7:30- 8:30pm @ Joy of Motion's Atlas Center.

Beginning I will focus on building body awareness, increased stamina, and tribal posture using a combination of classic tribal style moves and the Suhaila Salimpour format with a pronounced emphasis on strong technique. The class will explore interpretation of traditional and nontraditional music, and students will learn about the history of the tribal style and its context within the worldwide belly dance community. This class is meant for students with at least 1 year of serious dance study and who are willing to sweat in class and be sore the next day. That said, those new to bellydance who are curious about tribal are always welcome!

Tribal Fusion, Beginning II; Building on Basics with Layering and Locks
Monday nights 8:30-9:30pm @ Joy of Motion's Atlas Center.

Beginning II classes will build on the basics taught in Beginning I such as glute-driven hip work, undulations isolated in the torso, and American Tribal Style movements, and will introduce more complex elements such as muscle locks, three-quarter shimmies, full-time isolations, and non-Middle Eastern musical interpretation. It is recommended that students have at least one semester of Asharah's Beginning I tribal fusion classes.

Performing for Renn Fest in PA 2007?

I wanted to know if i had to be part of a class or group to be able to perform next year on stage. I have always wanted to perform in front of an audience. I've never taken classes. I learned how-to by my mom teaching me, watching videos like Gothic Belly Dancing (Ariellah and Asharah), and doing the Rachel Brice DVD practices. Many people have told me that i don't dance like an amateur. Do they try out people before putting them on stage or have to be part of a class/group/tribe? Thanks....

I survived organizing the Durga Tour, but not without help from some fabulous DCTribal folk and their significant others, and of course Maduro who even sacrificed part of our anniversary celebration to come to Kinko's with me to photocopy show programs.

But no rest for the weary! That's right!

Did you know that I have a blog?

Hey everyone... Did you know I have a blog? Not the tribe.net blog, but another one, where I write "deep thoughts" about my dancing and about belly dance in general? It's a little self-centered, yes, but I hope that anyone who reads it will give my writing some thought and reflect on their own dancing. I'm hardly any guru or mentor when it comes to dancing, but I know my own experiences, and I hope that my experiences in trying to find my voice as a dancer will encourage anyone who reads it to find their voice. I originally created the blog as a resource for interested students, but since you all are here because you like me or something, I thought you would be interested too. :)

Asharah's classes at Joy of Motion are now open for registration at http://www.joyofmotion.org/Fall%2006/bystyle.htm#MIDDLE%20EASTERN%20DANCES

Classes are held at the Atlas Center in DC (newly painted to prevent curious passersby from gawking at the Suhaila butt exercises! Hooray!) and have moved from Wednesday to Monday for this session. And NEW this semester she is holding a Beginner 2 performance class (denoted by the "C" on the registration site) with choreography, ta-da! Sign up now!

Wow...that was so commercial announcer-y that I almost feel like I have to legal disclaimer myself.

While most people know her from her dancing or the goth bellydance video I have to mention here (NOT as a personal plug) that she performed the live dombek portions, zills, and riq on my track "Karakas" which will appear on my album "Shimmer Sustain" and the "Strange Flesh" compilation with Collide, Solace, Tim Rayborn, Knossos, and others

oh and she also did the entire artwork for the record

I saw this girl for the first time last month, dancing at tribal fest and, well, I was so f-ing blown away by her. My Goddess - she is an Amazing dancer.

Such a humble sweetheart too. I can't wait to see her again.
