ASHEVILLE ALTERNATIVE FITNESS DUO CONCLUDES
“CONSCIOUS MOVEMENT ACROSS AMERICA” TOUR IN HOMETOWN

Weeklong Wellness Extravaganza Helps Relieve Stress, Heal Communities

Free Wellness Walk Aug. 30 Shares Health Benefits of Tai Chi and Qigong

Asheville residents Michael Clark and Accem Scott are best known for their “Conscious Movement” cable television series on URTV (Charter cable channel 20) and for sharing “meditation in motion” with hundreds of local people by hosting celebrations of World Tai Chi & Qigong Day. Now they return to their hometown for the climax of Conscious Movement Across America, a four-city tour that offers a weeklong series of wellness events, many of them for free.

“We decided to end our tour with a big homecoming that offers something for everyone,” said certified teacher Michael Clark, founder of Heaven and Earth Tai Chi, “The whole week will be jam-packed with events. From free lectures and walks to mind-body fitness workshops and a screening of our TV show “The Best of Conscious Movement.” URTV has declared Aug. 24-31 “Conscious Movement Week” and will broadcast the series every evening from 10-11 p.m. Mission Hospitals even asked us to put on a stress-reduction workshop for employees.”
Asheville-area residents will be able to sample for free the once closely guarded Chinese health secrets of Tai Chi and Qigong (pronounced “chee gung”) at a Free Wellness Walk Saturday, Aug. 30, 10 a.m. – 12 noon, from City-County Plaza downtown (College St. & Spruce St.) to Montford Park. Participants will enjoy a leisurely walk combined with mini-classes in moving meditation and fun ways to take care of themselves.

“This walk is a real homecoming for us,” said Accem Scott, an African-American martial artist and naturopath, author of the American Barefoot Doctor’s Manual, “Montford Park is where we held the first Conscious Movement Day in 2004.”

Asheville is host to one of four such walks across the country as part of Conscious Movement Across America, a grass-roots approach to self-healing and healing our communities, founded by Clark and Scott. Conscious Movement Across America aims to bring health, wellness and fellowship to all Americans across racial, economic and religious boundaries. The Free Wellness Walks and accompanying workshops teach folks how to relieve stress and stimulate their body’s internal medicine through mind-body techniques like Tai Chi and Qigong.

Clark and Scott are a bi-racial teaching team with more than 30 years of combined experience. “We want to reach out to all ethnic groups, which is why we included a free workshop at Shiloh Community Center that serves many African-Americans,” said Scott, “Michael and I call ourselves ‘Tao Brothers,’ because it reflects our mission of teaching people mind-body harmony and racial harmony. We believe that as people heal themselves, they'll be able to begin healing our planet. This is the kind of world we want to live in, and we believe others do, too.”

Tai Chi and Qigong are low-impact health exercises that coordinate breath, movement and meditation. Western science supports these mind-body arts as complementary medicine, recognizing their key benefits like relieving stress, improving balance, boosting the immune system and enhancing mental focus.

For more information, contact Tao Brothers: www.tao-brothers.com, taobrothers@gmail.com, phone: (828) 280-7287

------- Okay everyone.. Here is a good chance to get out there and hoop or bellydance or even spin some poi - in the street! - in a parade.
10 a.m. – 12 noon, from City-County Plaza downtown (College St. & Spruce St.) to Montford Park!
Get out there and MOVE!

So I was dead set on moving to Asheville sometime early in the fall (most likely August).. My brother went to Warren Wilson, I used to stay with him for a while and loved it.. He warned me that jobs are very scarce..
I researched Asheville a bit on the net and got really mixed reviews.. I have a friend that goes to school there, and she loves it and thinks I should come down. I have another friend that moved there, but moved back to Nashville after only four weeks. He went to temp agencies, applied everywhere and didn't get a response anywhere. I know that jobs are extremely hard to find, but surely a serving job wouldn't be impossible? I've been saving up money anticipating it to take a while to get work. Another negative aspect I read about is the cost of living. But I checked out Craigslist, and noticed that there are plenty of people that live around 5 to a house, making the rent around 300.. The idea of living in a place that is a bit commune-like is exciting to me, and I love being surrounded by people, so that wouldn't be a problem.
I really dig the whole vibe of Asheville, and of course with any place, there will be ups and downs.. I wanted to try a new place that will be different and have lots of interesting people, but how hard is it to move to Asheville? I just wanted to get a realistic viewpoint from people that have already settled there.. Thank you so much!

is still missing in action in asheville, north carolina. if you are in asheville, or know or have any "friends" in or around that area -NC, SC, TN, GA please forward this info to them. he was last seen on 6-17 wearing his collar. he is a 75 lb. great dane/greyhound/shephard mix with a scar on his leg from a recent surgery. he is tan with brindle markings. big, beautiful, and graceful; friendly, but quite possibly skittish. it is quite likley at this point that somebody has taken him in. keep your ears and eyes peeled. sooner or later he might turn up. he is the love of my life, and I am dying inside.

On March 26th, 2007, Skye Barkschat and her boyfriend, Ben, were riding their bicycles home from the grocery store. It was a casual one mile trip through a residential neighborhood for Skye and Ben, both experienced cyclists. Just blocks from their apartment, Skye lost control of her bike and fell, hitting her head on the pavement, placing her into a coma.

In that blink of an eye, Skye’s life and the lives of all who love her changed forever. Skye suffered a devastating brain injury and there was little chance she would survive. Miraculously and courageously, Skye fought back. A week after the accident, Skye stabilized and started showing glimpses that her brain was still functioning. Since then, Skye has amazed medical professionals with her physical and cognitive responses. She is clearly aware of those around her and is responding to verbal and physical stimulus. Skye has been moved in a rehabilitation center to continue her physical and cognitive therapy.

To help fund Skye’s recovery, we have created Reach for the Skye, Inc., a 501c3 nonprofit organization. All fundraising will be directed to Skye’s medical, rehabilitation and long term care costs.

Residents of Biltmore Lake are pissed. They paid good money for picture postcard views from their McMansions, and now the damned beavers are starting to do what beavers do - gnaw on trees. This will be grist for a few more newspaper stories, but it’s easy to see where this is headed. In the words of one observer, “Western North Carolina is being developed to death.”

I remember walking out one evening to inspect an apple tree near Wilson Creek. From a distance I could see something was amiss. The tree had been toppled! And I knew right away the beavers had done it. They had already started piling limbs and rocks in the creek. Within a few weeks, I could launch my canoe above their dam and paddle upstream for a couple of hundred feet, on the pond they had created.

About fifteen years ago, I sat in on a brainstorming session for economic development in Jackson County. Breakout groups had self-sorted themselves between the natives and the outsiders. Detecting the natives’ lack of enthusiasm for gated communities and golf courses, one of the outsiders noted hopefully, “At least they’ll be dying out in the next few years.”

Since then, natives might have resented seeing one subdivision after another carved into the mountains, but were accomplices nonetheless, thanks to their libertarian tendencies: “If a man owns a piece of land [or a dog…or a woman, we could infer], he ought to be able to do what he wants with it.” That timeless rubric of stubborn independence was the one scrap of mountain heritage that developers could embrace whole-heartedly.

So now we have Bear Lake Reserve. But heaven help any bear that dares to set foot upon the fairways of that monstrosity’s golf course.

At Pawpaw Cove any habitat that might have been suitable for pawpaws has long since been bulldozed away. But my, aren’t those Bradford pears pretty!

And just down the road, Jack Debnam has his Stonehaven development, a fitting name since it appears to be a haven for no living thing.

Power intoxicates. When people become inconvenient, the answer is genocide, no questions asked. Around here, when nature becomes inconvenient, the answer is ecocide, no questions asked. The casualty list grows every day. Endangered species in Jackson County include the Appalachian elktoe mussel, the Carolina northern flying squirrel, the Indiana bat, and the rock gnome lichen, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service.

On an unusually warm December afternoon last week, I lay down in my garden. Overhead, a woodpecker semaphored his way from one side of the valley to the other. A raucous party of crows carried on. The only other sound was the Aeolian song of the wind through the pines. Having gardened here for almost twenty years, my body is drawn to this soil. My body is the soil. The minerals that became the lettuce and potatoes, the peas and beets, have become a part of me. I could call it a mystical connection between myself and the soil. But by any measure, the connection is undeniable.

The beavers of Biltmore Lake are messing with the wrong folks. When you’ve built a million dollar house, you’ve earned the right to have things your way, to spend your life in a carefully manicured facsimile of nature. And when you die, you can spend eternity in a hermetically sealed box protected from the elements.

For myself, it is comforting to think of my ashes carried away on the wind and water, my bones mingled with the rocks and the roots of the land that I love. To be a part of this place is not a bad thing at all. Maybe that’s what the beavers are trying to teach the people of Biltmore Lake.
Mizilca comes from a very broad background in
movement: classical dance, folkdance, bellydance,
ballroom dance, yoga, karate, tai chi and more. Her
passion for dance, life, stories and Spirit inspired
her to create a form that synthesizes these components
into what is called Transformational Bellydance, which
she has taught for 6 years.

Michelle Dionne has been dancing since the age of 4,
studying and performing classical and world styles.
More recently, she has been immersed in the healing
and spiritual aspects of dance, traveling the world
absorbing ancient, sacred dance techniques. Now, she
dances in Native American-style ceremonial dances for
personal and planetary healing. For 8 years, she has
shared her approach as Spirit Dancing - Healing and
Creative Movement. Helping others to explore the
wisdom of the dance is her greatest joy.

Heather Kabat is a student and a teacher of Chen Style
Tai Chi, which includes the traditional curriculum of
moving form, Qigong moving and stationary meditation,
arts and Tai Chi for 11 years. Her passion is

Dr. Dennis McKenna is the world's leading researcher into Ayahuasca, a trans-formative chemical compound that was developed by the Shamans of the Amazon.

Just wanted to touch base with everyone and let you know about Croatan. Thank you for helping us to make this happen. Croatan is a unique event and the first of it's kind to be hosted in the heart of Appalachia. Dennis will be making a brief appearance at Malaprops on Saturday (Asheville, NC) around noon and then back to the Croatan site by the river. If you have a STS9/DB ticket stub and haven't already bought tickets for Croatan, you get $10 off at the gate.

Dennis says hello and he's going to talking about Ayahuasca's relationship to Humanity. The main lecture will be at 5:30 on Saturday, 4-22. He just got back from Peru too, so he's going to share more about that trip.

Online sales end on April 17th, but we'll have tickets at the gate. No more volunteers accepted past April 19th, contact us for more info (www.harmonywerx.org).

We'll also be posting a schedule soon with lecture details.

Dr. Dennis McKenna will be hosting a lecture
about his research into Ayahuasca. Dennis
McKenna is the brother of Terence McKenna - the
