I have been making balms and ointements for my family and they include Hypericum perforatum and capsicum infused oil, and rosemary essential oil to help alleviate pain. I have had great success with this formula, however I am wondering about topical use of these three ingredients in a person on heart, blood pressure or MAO inhibitor medication. I have taken my herbal consultant certification and I do know that taking these internally may cause risk, however I am unsure about the topical aspect. My grandmother is on blood thinners, as is my uncle, and they would both like to use the product, however I have not let them due t my concerns. Medical doctors that I have spoken to about it, do not seem to know the answer (as I suspected). Please advise, thank you.

Greetings,

My cousin is working towards her ND. Several people, including her and her sister in law, tried an elimination diet - something pretty basic: eliminating nightshades, wheat and products with gluten, corn, soy, preservatives, meat except for organic chicken and lamb, dairy, sugar, sweateners (artificial and things like brown rice syrup - stevia is ok), strawberries, citrus (except lemon juice), melons, peanuts, cashews, most fish except for wild deepwater fish, coffee, alcohol, most drinks actually except green tea and water, refined oils...most items I'm eating are organic, whole foods. A few exceptions would be almond milk, a couple recommended rice cereals, and brown rice crackers. Everything else I'm cooking myself.

So you do the elimination for three weeks and then add things back on. Again, pretty standard elimination diet. I'm also doing Dr. Natura's colon cleanse. So for breakfast I'll have a pureed pear or mango or something mixed with water and the psyllium husk blend.

I understand about the "healing crisis" that frequently occurs on day 3 or 4. Well, it's day 12. I had sharp headaches near the temples days 3 and 4 - day 3 it lasted a couple hours, day 4 maybe a half an hour. Day 5 I as ok. Since day 6 I've had a dull headache pretty much constantly. Most of the time its irritating but not horribly painful but it does flare up.

There are no naturopaths in my city to ask this to so I'm hoping I can find information here.

A bit more about myself...prior to the detox I was eating horribly. I'd been on a 100 day road trip and for about 30 days living on junk and fast food. Then the holiday's hit and while I was eating better I was also drinking more. I DID NOT drink a lot of caffeine prior to the detox. I did drink a lot of wine. Probably daily, mostly red. I also had gastric by-pass surgery almost 4 years ago, though I do not have issues eating anything really or any other issues relating to the surgery. I have done many different diets since surgery and have never had an issue like this.

I can't figure out what it is I've cut out that is causing the pain. I'm about ready to give up. Any thoughts?

I am wondering if any one has any idea as to what I can do for my self to overcome this disfunction. I am currently taking a multi and mag/cal reverse ratio, pantothinic acid and B complex. I have made an herbal mixtute of three parts. 1.Austragulus, valarian, siberian gensing, and licorise. 2.St. johns wart, ginkco. lemon balm, scullcap, chamamile, oat straw. 3.Spiriment, chamimile, and hybiscus. The last set is just to make it taste yummy. I do physical therapy too. It is the nervous system overreacting and affects my circulation. The body does not recieve enough oxygen either. I know it is rare, but if any one has either known someone, or has worked with someone , please let me know what you or they have tried that seemed to work. Thank you and blessing.

Disclaimer: this is not meant as an attack on your beliefs. I am truly disgusted with the pharmaceutical industry, and have a deep respect for mother earth and the medicines she gives us, but......

Why does the naturopathic community, which is full of intelligent, questioning, well-educated individuals, condone the use of homeopathy, when all reliable double-blind scientific studies tell us that it is no more effective than a placebo? Why do my alternative-wellness-minded friends always recommend supplements to me, that upon later research, i found out to be ineffective, or worse, irritating to the body?

It is so clear to me that many herbal medicines work and that acupuncture works. There is evidence that they do. I guess I just feel reluctant to go to a naturopath, because i don't believe in half the stuff they do.

Anyhow, I am really interested in hearing peoples' perspectives, especially from people who can help me understand. Even better - please change my mind!

Below is an email clip with information on aspartame. If you want even more after that, let me know. One of my colleagues at Bastyr is personally involved in a project here in Washington called "Life is Sweet" that is directed at providing diabetics with healthier food choices - since the predominant advice given to the majority of diabetics these days is to subsititue sugar with artificial sweeteners and the widest used right now is aspartame.

Also, if you want to work with her on getting aspartame banned here in Washington State, please let me know. I would be more than happy to pass along contact info.

Email clip follows:

> * ASK THE DOCTOR
> * Linda Calabresi
> * January 13, 2007
>
>
>
>I have been prescribed a medication which, I
>read on the packet, contains aspartame. I have
>read that aspartame has been linked to brain
>tumours and other neurological disorders. If
>this is the case why isn't this substance banned
>and should I risk taking this medication?
>
>Aspartame appears to have been dogged by
>controversy since it was first approved for use
>in the early 1980s. A quick search on the web
>will show the low-kilojoule sweetener commonly
>found in diet soft drinks has been allegedly
>linked to dozens of medical conditions, from
>headaches and nausea to multiple sclerosis and,
>as you say, brain tumours. And there are some
>legitimate animal studies that have supported
>some of these links. Aspartame does contain a
>number of chemicals, some of which, such as
>phenylalanine and methanol, can be poisonous in
>certain circumstances. However, the reality is
>that for the amount we would consume, even in
>diets relatively high in aspartame, it has been
>shown to be very safe. That is the consensus of
>opinion from experts such as the Food Standards
>Australia and New Zealand as well as the
>European Food Safety Authority after reviewing
>all the available evidence. Even the
>conservative US Food and Drug Administration
>puts the acceptable daily intake of aspartame at
>50mg per kilogram of body weight - which is
>about 20 cans of diet soft drink for an average
>adult man. All in all I would suggest you take the medication prescribed.

Dear Dr. Calabresi,

With regard to the question about aspartame in medication

As far as government agencies, understand they
have a relationship with the manufacturers. You
might contact Dr. Sandra Cabot in Australia and
she will verify this. She is Mission Possible
Australia, doctorcabot@ozemail.com.au You can
contact Mission Possible New Zealand, Chris
Wheeler, taoist2@pl.net A good deal of the New
Zealand Parliament was sent the Report For
Schools which you should read on the front banner of www.wnho.net

The FDA actually revoked the petition for
approval. Here it is with a clip from Sweet
Misery: A Poisoned World, that explains how this
toxin got on the market, thanks to the political
chicanery of Don Rumsfeld who was at one time CEO
of Searle: www.wnho.net/fda_petition1.doc <students.bastyr.edu/exchweb/...redir.asp
In New Zealand you can also contact Dr. Woodrow
Monte who wrote the journal article, Aspartame:
Methanol and the Public Health which we have on
dorway.com He may currently be in Canada and his email is monte12@shaw.ca

Currently there are efforts around the world to
ban this deadly chemical that should never have
been approved and has caused a global
plague. Here is one of the new
releases: www.mpwhi.com/banning_aspartame.htm <students.bastyr.edu/exchweb/...redir.asp

Most importantly you should know that aspartame
interacts with all drugs and vaccines:
www.wnho.net/aspartame_interacts.htm <students.bastyr.edu/exchweb/...redir.asp This
lady should immediately be sent this report and
she needs to take it to her physician. It is
imperative that you let her and her physician
know about not taking anything with this chemical.

There is no safe dose, and neurosurgeon Russell
Blaylock, M.D., author of Excitotoxins: The Taste
That Kills, www.russellblaylockmd.com says the
reactions to aspartame are not allergic but toxic
like arsenic and cyanide. He has an excellent
lecture, The Truth About Aspartame, which you can get at www.atavistic.com

The Ramazzini Study in Italy shows aspartame to
be a multipotential carcinogen which confirms
FDA's original findings. And yes, aspartame
breaks down to DKP, a brain tumor agent, that
triggered brain tumors in original studies.

All these new studies are on www.wnho.net and you
can find a lot of government documents on
www.dorway.com The Trocho Study shows the
formaldehyde converted from the free methyl
alcohol embalms living tissue. It damages DNA.

Dr. Adrian Gross, the late FDA Toxicologist,
told Congress that an allowable daily dose
should have been able to be set since aspartame
without a shadow of a doubt triggers brain tumors
and brain cancer. All these reports and one of
the three congressional hearings are on the web sites mentioned.

Incidentally, the only person I know of that
drank as many as 17 diet drinks a day was in a
coma at the Mayo Clinic. There is no safe dose!

He's lost 20 pounds, excessive night sweats, depression, lack of energy, facial twitches, loss of appetite and sex drive. He's in his mid 40's, has a pretty unhealthy diet lacking in fiber and veggies, high stress job. He doesn't drink or smoke - he's been sober for almost 25 years, was a heavy drug user and drinker before that. He's been going to an MD general practice, and he's tested him for "everything" and "can't find anything wrong." My mother_in-law says she feels like someone "used magic on him or something" and is desperate - I told her to try Chinese herbal medicine or a naturopath or just anything alternative for a different take. They're not usually open to anything like that, but she says she's ready to try anything. Any ideas? We live in Portland, OR so I don't know a good naturopath where they live. Does anybody know of a naturopath they would recommend in the Riverside, or Orange County, CA area? Any help would be so appreciated as we are starting to really worry about him. Thank you.

I've had congestion and colds seriously for a year and vertigo caused originally by an inner ear infection on and off for 5 yrs. (esp. when I'm congested or stressed). I finally saw a naturopath and he put me on a number of herbs to start off. I'm quite sick now (extreme cold/flu symptoms) and he says I'm going through detox. which is wonderful!

he says in addition to satying on the herbs, to do multiple castor oil treatments and clay.

in addition is there anything anyone can recommend for getting through this? I guess more than anything I just want support. In many ways, I've never been happier to be sick because I know that I can and will get through this to the other side.

But being in the midst of it, I'm wondering what advice you may have for me, if any.
i've had a cold for going on two weeks now, and i'm wondering if any of you have any recommendations for remedies. i thought it was a simple little cold, it hardly bothered me, but in the last 4 days or so, it's gotten so much worse! now it hurts when i swallow, in addition to constantly having to blow my nose. feels like my throat is a little swollen, maybe, when i swallow. i have a bit of a cough, too. and right after i blow, and i think i'm good, i have to turn right around and blow it again! sometimes blowing my nose so much literally makes me dizzy! ... no noticeable aches or pains associated with it, except neck pain and a headache for maybe 3 days, and my throat is a little soar. no itchy or watery eyes or any other symptoms i can think of.

it's been so long since i've had a cold, i don't even remember how to treat it. i don't know what i should avoid, either.

is my lifestyle hindering my body's ability to heal? i usually smoke a doobie at least every other day with friends, and in the last two weeks or so, i've had at least one alcoholic beverage almost every night (usually a cosmo. i don't really know what kind of liquour they use. i'm not even really a drinker, man, i'm more inclined toward mary jane, but the friends i've been hanging out with lately are so hot that we get treated to drinks every time we go some place). i know i don't drink enough water, but i'm working on it, and my mom said i should drink some oj, too. oh, also, i usually get between 3-5 hours of sleep at night. and in the past two weeks or so--ever since i decided to hang out with mary jane only in the presence of friends--my appetite has decreased tremendously, and if i'm not hungry, i don't usually eat anything, but then go out and end up having a drink or two. i know that's wacko.

but for the drinking and not eating very much (a big meal in the afternoon, usually salmon and broccoli and sweet potatoes, or something close to it, is it), which are recent phenomena, these have been characteristics of my life for the whole summer... does drinking mess up your immune system or something?

i feel kinda silly for not knowing what affects my immune system and stuff, but i've just never really given it any thought because i NEVER get sick. it's been years and years. what would you recommend to increase the healing or at least treat the symptoms? it's starting to be a drag...

thanks, everyone. i appreciate any input or advice you have!
I also work as a holistic medicine advisor and have been asked by one of my clients if any of the current creams and such are safe and how effective they are or if I can recomend various herbal approaches that might help them.

The problem the couple are having is that the woman has a very small clitoris and quite poor circulation overall, and very diminished sensation in all of her erectile tissues.

The problem I see is twofold, short term and long term, in a purely physical sense, leaving aside all the psychological issues for now, that is for another professional, I am out of that field for good. Too stressful.

Anyway, I have her on some herbs to improve circulation, such as Ginkgo and Cayenne, as well as Ginseng and Saw Palmetto for hormonal balancing and it has helped some, but they keep seeing these ads for these herbal lotions that stimulate things in a shorter time frame and would like to know what they can apply to sensitize the area and improve blood flow quicker, specificly so they can improve their sex lives while they longer term methods take effect.

They asked about an oil that was infused with cinnamon and cayenne (very diluted), but I warned them it could cause problems if it was too strong and they should try a very small amount and see if it was strong enough to hurt and keep some vinegar ready for immediate cleansing if they did try it.

Essentially they are hoping for something like that which they can apply to the clitoris a little while before cunnilingus so that the her clitoris is more sensitive and has better blood flow, yet is not harmful to either, especially since it will get ingested.

Any ideas or suggestions?

She usually sees bright lights and feels nausea and a dull ache at her temples before they start. They instensify and last for an hour, and she usually lies on her stomcah in a dark room. Yesterday I gave her a full body massage, conscnetrating on her head. It didn't help, except to distract her from the pain. Would greatly appreciate any suggestions :)
