Re: Are you all having. . .
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 12:53 PMMy mom did visit for a while. But I had key lime pie. And I never touch baseball, though recently I heard that it is a more cerebral sport than I realized. Apparently there's more to it than spitting and itchy balls...

Sat, July 4, 2009 - 1:30 PMNo. I don't like holidays much. Maybe I would more if I celebrated them. I hope all of you enjoying barbecues and family get togethers are having fun today! -

Re: Are you all having. . .
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 2:44 PMI am at the laundromat. WOO HOO!
All alone (*bliss*), enjoying the sauna-like weather (seriously--I like it--and dressing for this weather is a no-brainer--flipflops and whatever).
And to-NIGHT I am going to watch Once Upon A Time In The West, because last night I had a Charles Bronson wet dream, and I miss him already.
It's kind of an experiment as I haven't had much patience for watching movies since I laid off the blunts... (months ago, already) -

My son will be arriving with a herd of fellow twenty somethings shortly with explsoives and mayhem on their minds. Main concern will be finding a semi sound insulated place for Bonnie the Border Collie to hide in. -

My husband ended up adopting a small dog from an animal rescue agency. -

Re: Are you all having. . .
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 9:33 PMThe husband's new dog came through an animal rescue agency called "Wonderdog." Small terrier mix, had been tied to a tree and had it's jaw broken. I live mostly in Portland, where I adopted earlier this year a new puppy to serve there as house dog. Aunt Bea refers to my last dog, Pope Rodni, who was my first tribe avatar and spirit for my fallow "Holy Sea Jamborie" tribe. Rodni posed well for dress-up in Papal vestments, and seriously could have been a canine model. Rodni was patient, and enjoyed the attention of a photo shoot. She could hold a pose, even with a big paper hat duct-taped to her head. -

Re: Are you all having. . .
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 10:48 PMBurgers on homemade buns, grilled corn, potato salad, fruit salad.
The dogs drank the beer.
Set off fireworks in the street in front of the house, enjoyed the bottle rockets from elsewhere in the neighborhood. Did the obligatory "Statue of Liberty" pose with sparklers, lit ground flowers in the street and hoped a car wouldn't come by (several did).
Made a blanket fort for the older dog to hide in and feel safe from the noise.
Happy Birthday, America.

Re: Are you all having. . .
Sun, July 5, 2009 - 11:49 AMJuly 4th in San Francisco is the height of fog season. Each year, clear or foggy, the rockets get fired up into the fogbanks, because it is tradition. Pretty flashes of color muted in the fogbank. Wooo-hooo! -

Re: Are you all having. . .
Sun, July 5, 2009 - 11:56 AMOne year we flew up from LA to SF just for the 4th. Hehehee... We waited behind the ferry building w/ a bunch of people for HOURS. We could kinda see the East Bay clearly.... of course. Years ago... I knew there were 2 displays near both bridges.... I thought, well... from the ferry building you should be able to see both. We waited and waited.... some homeless people came by w/ the save the got out of the trash can. The bones of a chicken. The guy kept saying the word "chicken" over and over and he was teasing his homeless gf that it was some other meat. Then he looked at me, out of all the people and wanted to have a dialog about the chicken. I told him it looked like squirrel to me. He started laughing and asked when the fireworks started. Someone else said in an hour. :) So.... 15 minutes before that hour the fog rolled in. Heheheheehe.... you could HEAR it... but not really see it. And then we had to walk back to BART--I have NEVER seen so many people in the streets or taking BART. Hehehehee.... It was fun--but no fireworks--I like it when things go wrong. :) -

Sun, July 5, 2009 - 10:30 PMbaseball is THE cerebral team sport. if you don't know what is going on and what is possibly going on, you really aren't getting much out of the game. it is a slow game, not a bang bang boom boom, knock everybody down game.

Re: Are you all having. . .
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 10:29 PMHello? Hello? Is this thing turned on?
Am I getting through?
WOW! I'll do this again next year. Why in hell didn't I think of this before?
Standing in the gentle rain in a crowd of strangers oohing and aahing watching the bombs go off and all the pretty colors.
The good looking lady next to me from Alabama was off on LSD and she was extatic. She was neat to be next to. I love that Southern Drawl.
If you understand, she kind of bled her neatness into the air around her. Maybe because we were both off we shared something.
I took my 9-pack cooler and sipped beer when I remembered I had one in my hand and she was quaffing a Bloody Mary.
We never introduced ourselves, we just stood there close enought to feel body heat, getting damp, oohing and aahing.
After it was over, we smiled and went our seperate ways.
I'll not forget her. I caught a piece of cardboard from one of the bangers and gave it to her and told her, "Here's a piece of tonight you can touch tomorrow."
Such is life.
I had no trouble getting home. I've lived here, off and on, for over 50 years and my feet know where to go.
I sat on a wet picnic table and thought about various and varied.
Let it rain on me.
Later. I'm gonna enjoy what's left..
No, I don't need drugs to hav fun, but soetimmes the drugs make it funner.
Me, I like making love when we're both tripping. Good Golly, Miss Molly. And we don't need to have sex to make love but that's neat, too..

Re: Are you all having. . .
Sun, July 5, 2009 - 8:14 AMwe didn't spend any money on fireworks this year, but the twenty-something boys from up the street put on a show for the whole neighborhood. everyone just pulls up their lawnchairs in a big circle and pools their fireworks resources, so to speak and it's a party.
i liked last night that while some people were drinking, none of the people shooting off fireworks were. there were little kids there and the boys were helping them with sparklers, ect.

Re: Are you all having. . .
Sun, July 5, 2009 - 8:18 AMfor working in a hotel, I'm lucky to have the weekend off! But it rained almost all day yesterday! I slept in, went grocery shopping, went for a walk, went to Bill's house to hang out, then I had to move the cookout indoors cause of the rain, oh well, a day off in the rain is still a day off! No pie, I had icecream. I was too bummed out to go see the fireworks in the rain, though. I watched my netflix movie, forbidden kingdom while my bf watched nascar -

Re: Are you all having. . .
Sun, July 5, 2009 - 11:28 AMI ended the day watching fireworks, too. From up on the roof one can see and hear the Berkeley Marina fireworks, and also see in the distance the San Francisco fireworks and the Oakland ones. Plus the various smaller ones set in nearby neighborhoods. A couple friends came over and the 4 of us watched from the roof. Then I watched a couple more displays on TV. The one in New York was nice.

Re: Are you all having. . .
Sun, July 5, 2009 - 11:33 AMI liked Vendetta's post too. Made me crave burgers and corn on the cob and potato salad and fruit salad (and her vivid company). And so many of these lovely posts made me feel like maybe I should have been more proactive about seeing some fireworks.
In SF for fireworks all I had to do was lean out my window (and freeze) and then go back to watching them on TV, and then lean out the window again (until I got too cold), etc.
In Chicago it was on the bike and to the lakefront to ooo and aww in the heat along with all the rest of the diverse cramped and huddled masses yearning to be free. It was cool I loved it.
I was at a wedding one Fourth of July way out in the middle of nowhere Pennsylvania, and saw the coolest small town fireworks ever after enjoying the rides and fried food at the local carnival. Flat on our backs on a grassy bank, all full of admiration and delight.
Although I have mixed feelings about the whole thing, of course, as many do. It's hard to enjoy a guilt free Fourth. But I do enjoy the benefits--and I do LOVE fireworks.
Here is an alternate slice of Americana from a Hare Krishna friend:
just got back from beach. An estastic Harinama chanting party. The beach was packed with so many people hearing the holy name. Then we went for a swim in the ocean. Then at 9:00 watched the fire-works. The day was so wonderful! Hope to see you soon. yours, A____ dasi
