Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Mon, November 2, 2009 - 12:02 AMAllende's Zorro is a pretty good read. .
I am reading Napoleon's Wars by Charles Esdaile , Serpentine by Thomas Thompson, and Hitler's Empire by Mark Mazower.
Serpentine has kind of taken over because it is such a powerful tale based on real people ard true evens. Thompson is a great story teller.
However. . .I have read 124 pages up to this point and for this note intended to post a link to Amazon books so that you could read a review and discovered something shocking about this book that was not revealed so far in the story. The main character becomes a. . . . . . . .
yeow! I didn't expect that!!!

Mon, November 2, 2009 - 4:57 AMYestereday I completed book 20 in the Aubrey/Machurin series by Patrick O'Brien. And started reading Dog Walker by Heath Kizzier. I am a one book at a time person and I don't actually read, I listen and quilt, listen and cook, listen and do laundry, listen and walk. I am a great listener. I love to read, but like to have something to do with my hands. I find also that when that portion of my brain is occupied with the story the rest of my brain really creates some cool stuff. -

Mon, November 2, 2009 - 9:48 AMJust finished Cory Doctorow's "Makers". Found him on Twitter via Neil Gaiman.
Doctorow's pretty much a preachy British version of William Gibson, without the razorgirls.
You can download it here:

Mon, November 2, 2009 - 9:52 AMoh Ripley--fun.
I was kind of a sucker for Allende's Zorro too. Fun ride.
I'm all non-fictioney right now. Reading: The Artist' Way--a Spiritual Guide to Creative Healing corny maybe but I like it
screenplay writing books
an encyclopedia of symbolism
I had the idea yesterday to find some audio files of Shakespeare. I want to just listen to the beauty of the language while I putter around the house.

Mon, November 2, 2009 - 12:00 PMJust finished Why We Suck by Denis Leary, and just finishing The Burning Time by Robin Morgan. Not really sure what's *actually* going to be next, but I want to read Crow Planet: Essential Wisdom from the Urban Wilderness by Lyanda Lynn Haupt. I'm fascinated by corvids. :o) -

Mon, November 2, 2009 - 4:04 PMI know Blue Jays are seen by some to be annoying pests, but I think they are such beautiful birds. I like them. I like crows too. -
-
Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Mon, November 2, 2009 - 4:19 PMMy neighborhood is really crow-heavy, but my sweetie has *tons* of jays; we live about a mile apart! I have TONS of crows, and a fair number of flickers. Mating season for the flickers gets pretty annoying around here . . . If you have a metal chimney cap, at least. I (heart) birds. :o)

Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Mon, November 2, 2009 - 4:27 PMI love crows. But I am found of things that would just as soon pluck your eyeball from your skull as not.
I read Little Bother by Cory Doctorow not too long ago and really, really, really, really liked it.
And I just finished Nation by Terry Pratchett which was fun, like Lord of the Flies, but happier.
I've been tearing through various "small house" books, design books for me are like board books for grown-ups. I just look at the pictures.
And I just read Lucifer at the Starlite, poems by Kim Addonzio. Super quick read, sometimes poetry books bog me down. Read this one all in one sitting...

Mon, November 2, 2009 - 7:49 PMI love most birds, except pigeons, we had some nest on the roof, they shit everywhere, & nest in shit. We chase them off if we see them around, cause they hog the birdfeeder & window sill from the chickadees, morning doves & sparrows. We even trained our indoor cat to meow at us if he spots them. -

Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Mon, November 2, 2009 - 8:46 PMyeah here we go...
My cat Wolfy had a whole war-thing going on with this particular pigeon. The bird would show up at the same time of day every day--morning and/or evening, and kind of swoop the window and drive my cat MAD. It started after a window-sill near-altercation (save the pane of glass).
The Tenderloin is tough, I'm tellin' ya. They don't fool around. -

Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 6:50 AMwell, Pete's pretty clever to start with when my hamster got loose, Pete cornered him, & hollered at me till I retreived the hamster instead of eating him! Pete used to meow at all the birds, till we started feeding them, I might be crazy, but Pete understands that once we start feeding, caring for something, it's family. We still chased off pigeons, so Pete does too. -
-
Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 7:58 AMWe love our birds, no piegons but lots of Jays, Grackles, Mourning Doves, little sparrows and finches as well as a Cardinal couple, a red headed woodpecker, a nasty Mocking Bird, and Gold Finches in the summer around our sunflowers and black eyed susans. I sited a humming bird this year too.
My cat Nyla use to get at least one bird a year but she's slowing down now and she's rarely goes after them although we did find her perched atop the birdfeeder a few times this year and had to chase her off. The damn thing is high and the pole is metal so she must be really smart to figure a way to get up there. We have to use a ladder to fill it. She didn't catch anything though.

Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 7:50 AMI'm re-reading Mary Stewart's The Hollow Hills for the 3rd time. One of my best friends in high school introduced me to "The Merlin Novels" by Stewart and I fell in love with the Authorian Legend, especially Merlin.I thought there were only 3 in the set but a few years back I discovered the fourth and final novel so I decided to re-read all of them before reading the final one.I read the first this summer"The Cyrstal Cave" and read a few others in between, one of them being "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy. So now I'm read the second of the series.

Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 10:19 AMMe, I'm a ecletic reader. Damned near anything excepting those F**king 'bodice ripper' Harliquin Romances. Ugh, yuck and phooey.
The list of ingredents on a box of corn flakes has a better plot.
J. C. Pierce, Robert Aspirin, Terry Pratchet, Patricia Cornwell, Poe, James Herriot. Nostrdomas, the Bible, Playboy - the list goes on and on and...
I'm a rotational reader and I might have six or nine books being read and/or reread. -
-
Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 2:30 PMI love Robert Aspirin. Its like candy.
Today I started reading Stoker Dracula. I have never read it. Cant believe I havent yet. But found an old paperback today and had no reason not to.

Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 2:53 PMDitto to those Harliquin Novels.
Hey i read the cereal box too.
I bet a lot of use are guilty of that.
Come on, fess up. -

Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 6:04 PMIf you want to know what they are mixing in your food, you have to read the cereal box. No corn syrup for me, it is banned in European foods for a reason.
Just finished 'Unseen Acedemicals' by Terry Pratchett, still my very favorite author, very humorous & astute examination of sportsmanship. (I pre-order his books on Amazon.) -
-
Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 7:35 AMCurrently I'm reading a book that my great-grandmother gave my mother. It's called "The Barbary Coast." Can't remember who the author is off the top of my head; however, I have to be careful while reading it. It was published in 1933. It's seen better days.
As for the cereal box? Yep, read those. And bread wrappers and any other food item that I plan on eating. That's what happens when the household is on the South Beach Diet. I wish the US would ban Corn Syrup. It's a pain in the rear to find food items without it as an ingredient.
-
Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 9:18 AMnasty corn syrup is in everything here: bread, salad dressing, cereal, marinade, those flaovored coffee creams. I watched a documentry called corn, saw how corn syrup is made, & you know all those pretty cornfields? you can't eat the corn, it has to processed, then it's for cattle feed & corn syrup, not for feeding people (wtf?) Then they said that if cattle were not being slaughtered for food, they couldn't live very long on a corn feed diet, they would get obese, diabetic & die young anyway. But our gov. sucks. They want us to eat healthy, they want to tax sodas, but is there an affordable grocery store with fresh fruit, veggies, in most innercities? Do doctors eduacate thier working class patients on prevention, & eating healthy? vending machines have nothing healthy in them, everything in them has corn syrup, but they are everywhere! I can't even find yogurt (unless it's plain) or canned fruit without corn syrup! sorry but corn syrup pisses me off! -

Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 7:38 PMyea, well I don't want to know how much more money I'd spend on healthier choices, ie no corn syrup. Yes I can switch water for soda, do I want to? hell no, but on the other hand I can't afford a $5.00 bottle of pomigranite juice all the time & I always aim for one meat free meal a day, but that can get expensive. We don't have a frigde at work, so it's a couple of soso .89 cent burritos vs a yummy hummus, feta cheese, spinach, black olive gyro with cucumber sauce for $5.00, no sides, no drink. & there is no where in walking didstance to get fresh fruit. Oh well I did cut down to 2 cans of generic dew a day, & I write to the local paper about once a month, asking where is the grocery store they promised our nieghborhood. -

Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 8:55 PMIn addition to law books like "Torts & Personal Injury" for my classes, I like to keep up with my sci-fi. Currently reading "Earth" by David Brin.
He's a pleasantly complex writer whose understanding of the female mind has made me wonder if it's a nom de plum and he's really a she. -
-
Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 7:15 PMI like David Brin also, although I haven't read any of his for a while. I have read Earth, as I remember, I liked it.
I will say that I don't drive, I do walk or ride my bike pretty much anywhere I am going. I also take the local bus to the store in the winter when it is quite cold to do my shopping. I have a milk crate on my bike for when I plan to do a "big" grocery shopping (especially good for those 30 lb bags of dog food). I also have this absolutely fabulous pink mini lunch cooler that I can use to carry my lunch to work, with real pink tupperware to put inside it, that Morgan's grandmother gave me. I love it. -
-
Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 7:33 PMi thought morgan had absconded with that? that morgan's g-ma is quite the old broad, tough a nails old bird, sweetie pie. when she isn't being a pain in my neck. -

Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 7:55 PMMorgan really likes the tupperware soup bowl thing with the vent on the top, he takes that to school and the cafeteria ladies let him use their microwave to warm up his soup. Cafeteria ladies seem to really like Morgan, kinda like his grandmother.

Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 9:13 PMno, but the city counsel did, I don't remember their plan but something about tax initiaves for new buissnesses that create local jobs. what with all the empty lots, & buildings, we need a grocery store & everyone's been sitting on the fence for 5 yrs. They spent all the money on research. People keep writing in the paper how fucked out our neighborhood is & 80% of the East end residience don't have a car. Yes, there are choices that are healthier that I do make, I walk or ride my bike to work most days, that adds up to 12 miles a week, I save money & I get exercize. and give a girl a break, yea rarely do I bring a lunch, but I make a quarter above minimum wage & I'm on my feet all day, I don't drink, I don't smoke, so if all I ask for is a hot meal & a soda, well that may be my only vice besides costuming. We don't have a yard, & everytime someone wants to put a green space or a community garden up, in an empty lot (like next to the money losing clay center) Rich people bitch that only vagrants & drug addicts would hang out, so if we put up a green space, then they won't buy tickets to thier stupid plays at the clay center, cause "they don't want to see us hanging out." WTF, they should've put their stupid center in thier hometown. I'd pay to see thier fat asses walk to work! -

Wed, November 4, 2009 - 9:42 PMoh, and I've written to city counsel, too. I don't like peple that don't live in my neighborhood telling me where I can & can't hang out. I will be at that empty lot everyday, just to spite them, I don't care if you are rich, just don't cop a holier than thou attitude just cause you are going to cats, uh they need to get a clue, cause I've seen a shitload of plays that will never come to the clay center in WV! -

Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 1:59 PMokay, let me state this again, If you don't drive, or can't afford a car & there is no grocery store in the neighborhood, where do you get food to put in the cooler? Yes my boyfriend has a car, but many of my fellow neighbors don't have that option. Damnit it would be so much more acceptable (to other folks atleast) if I lived in Europe & didn't drive. -

Govenment warning: (1) According to the Surgeon General, women should not drink booze if she's preggers because it will fuck with her baby.
(2) getting drunk fucks up your abilty to do anything except stagger, fall down a lot, piss off people and puke and might make you sick.
The g'ment might be right this time.
And just what army is the Surgeon General in? Is there Surgeon Pvt's, Sgt's, Lt's and such?

Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Fri, November 6, 2009 - 9:18 AMmeh, they don't run so well in some parts of town, & it can be dangerous to wait for a bus at the transient mall downtown, one of my neighbors works at the closest grocery store, about a mile and 1/2 from where I'm at but he walks or rides his bike, there's hardly any sidewalks on route to the store, & the bus doesn't stoop there, most people that have to either hire a cab or gitney every week for grocery shopping, or take the bus to grogers on the westside. It's just not right that every other nieghborhood has a grocerystore, I can walk 3 blocks & get a fith of gin (if I wanted to!) but I can't get a bunch of grapes or bananas. However there is a farmers market, can be pricey, but I ride my bike over there sometimes. There can be huge stima here about riding your bike to work or taking the bus in my town it means you are poor! Almost all the winos around here have a bike. I've waited at red lights on my bike & been offered drugs, pimping services. I've waited at a busstop & have been asked if I'm a working girl, um they didn't mean my mall job. I've been creeped out by guys I've never met before saying "I know you, I've seen you on your bike" on the bright side I've also been congradulated on being green & 3 people have bought bikes for themselves cause of my nondriving ass! -

Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Fri, November 6, 2009 - 4:16 PMI don't think I have ever seen a wino with a bike. Seriously. And a mile & a half to get to the store and you can't walk that with a granny cart or wagon in tow...wow. I guess you ARE screwed. -

Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 7:11 AMactually, it's not so hard to move without at car, I've never driven one, but I've moved about 10 times in my adult life, & now I've got the moving bug, but I' had that 7 yrs ago, & ended up here in Chas WV, so I don't know plus my boyfriend is from here, & don't want to. It's true about the winos on bikes btw, i guess it's a local thing. I lived in 3 different neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, I spent a month in a trailer court, out side Seattle, Washington, I lived in Boone, NC for 2 yrs. Nope, never saw a wino on a bike. This town has a population of 50,000, things like that stick out. -

Re: What the F are you readin' F'in now?!
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 11:53 AMI've seen wino's on bikes. Usually they're pushin' them and have a big basket on the front full of flotsam and jetsam and bottles. There's also this bike drop off program round here which seems to be working out half assed well for those what chooses it.
I am reading Galore by Michael Crummy -- damn good too. And two mysteries whose titles I cain't remember but do manage to keep the stories more or less straight in my noggin'. One is a Three Pines Inspector Gamache and the other is the new Sara Paretsky, VI Warshawsky book. Somebody mentioned Jane Austen. She is one of my particular favorites, look for the pbs series Lost in Austen if you like her (it's about the writer, not the city, ha). I started that there new Diana Gabaldon, let's pretend we can time travel and Clare can live for 200 years but it was crap so I put it back. I used to go to the library but I'm not allowed in anymore. -
