Yeah, I know this is a bit different from our usual fare on this tribe, but we can ask ANYTHING, right? I've been puzzled by some of these things lately. Please answer any that you've had experience with, and add any categories I left out. And please add any relevant comments!
How much do YOU tip:
For a meal/drinks at a restaurant, ordered from a waiter/waitress?
For drinks ordered directly from a bartender?
For counter-service food (deli, bakery, etc.)?
At a coffeeshop?
Taxi driver/shuttle bus driver/tour guide?
At a salon (hair styling, manicures, waxing, etc.)?
Maids/housekeepers (at a hotel or wherever)?
Valet parking attendant?
Porter/bellhop (person who carries your bags)?
Doorman/concierge (um, what exactly do they do, anyway)?
Tow-truck driver (for unlocking your car, bringing gas, changing a tire, jump start, etc.)?
Full-service gas-station attendant (where they wash your windows and check your oil)?

Re: How Much Do You Tip?
Tue, October 17, 2006 - 12:43 AMGuess I should answer my own questions first. I suspect Seattle is totally off the map (in excess) when it comes to tipping, so I'm curious to hear from the geographically varied members of this tribe.
How much do YOU tip:
For a meal/drinks at a restaurant, ordered from a waiter/waitress? 20%, unless the service was exceptionally bad.
For drinks ordered directly from a bartender? A buck per drink; a little more if a lot of work was involved.
For counter-service food (deli, bakery, etc.)? Never sure what to do here. Do I need to tip if I'm just buying a loaf of bread at a bakery?
At a coffeeshop? I don't drink coffee; I usually just leave some change for my tea. It doesn't take much to dump a tea bag in some hot water, right?
Taxi driver/shuttle bus driver/tour guide? 15-20%, more for a tour guide offering more service than just driving you around.
At a salon (hair styling, manicures, waxing, etc.)? 20%. I forgot to include a massage therapist here--do you tip for that? Even if it's a one-person operation?
Maids/housekeepers (at a hotel or wherever)? A buck or two per night, with a note so it's clear that I didn't just forget my money in the room.
Valet parking attendant? Never sure about this, and it rarely comes up.
Porter/bellhop (person who carries your bags)? A buck per bag.
Doorman/concierge (um, what exactly do they do, anyway)? Really, are you supposed to tip the doorman at a fancy hotel just for opening the door? I don't get it. And the concierge--I guess you should tip if they make you a dinner reservation or something? How much?
Tow-truck driver (for unlocking your car, bringing gas, changing a tire, jump start, etc.)? I've never tipped these people, but now wonder if I should. Just a few days ago I had a guy spend an hour trying to unlock my car, which I had stupidly left my keys in. I didn't tip him, mostly because I had no cash and I had procured the guy through my AAA card. But then I felt bad later and thought I should have tipped him--these guys are nearly all private contractors, after all.
Full-service gas-station attendant (where they wash your windows and check your oil)? I know this comes up rarely for most of us these days, but in Oregon it's a state law, so ALL gas stations are full service there. (My dad, who lives in Oregon, sarcastically calls it the "Oregon State Employment System.") Should you tip them? -

Re: How Much Do You Tip?
Tue, October 17, 2006 - 2:50 AMFor a meal/drinks at a restaurant, ordered from a waiter/waitress? I tip 15% to 25% depending on service, and whether i am paying by cash or bank card
For drinks ordered directly from a bartender? a buck every couple of drinks. its not to hard to grab a beer and open it.
At a salon? I tip $2 or $3 for a haircut.
Those are pretty much the only people i have ever tipped. but mainly because i have never been to places with bell hops or doormen. I took a cab once. think i gave him a few bucks. I have never been on a tour. I dont go to coffee shops.
and as for the gas attendants in oregon. they are not really full service in the sense that they clean your windows and check your oil. they will if you ask. I normally do that stuff myself though.

Re: How Much Do You Tip?
Wed, February 11, 2009 - 8:24 PMin regards to the coffee shop comment, just so people that don't work at coffee shops know.
serving tea is the bane of any restaurant or coffee shop person.
it sounds simple but any food service worker would rather have you order coffee.
tea drinkers usually don't tip well and always want continuos refills and some want sugar, some want more lemons, some say the water isn't scalding, some want honey, some want extra plate spoons to keep taking the bag out, want only half a cup so it stays hot and doesn't overbrew (of course the half cup person wants constant refills)
whereas pouring the cup of coffee for you and refilling it is easy when everyone else has coffee.
in regards to tipping tow truck drivers, I recently did some research if their a private company they get paid alot better from what i've learned than AAA truck drivers.
the AAA truck drivers have probably towed my wife and me over 6 times in the past ten years, i feel horrible never having tipped them.
even $5 is greatly appreciated. even if YOU think it's a simple job of just changing your tire, they might've spent 1 hour of time total, from driving there, changing the tire, then driving back.

How much do YOU tip:
For a meal/drinks at a restaurant, ordered from a waiter/waitress? 20-25% unless the service sucks, then they get 15%
For drinks ordered directly from a bartender? $1 per
For counter-service food (deli, bakery, etc.)? $1 or $2, depending on the order
At a coffeeshop? spare change or $1
Taxi driver/shuttle bus driver/tour guide? $3-$5 depending on the total cost of the ride
At a salon (hair styling, manicures, waxing, etc.)? $10-$20, depending on the total cost and how much i think the salon is ripping their employees
Maids/housekeepers (at a hotel or wherever)? $5
Valet parking attendant? $5
Porter/bellhop (person who carries your bags)? $5
Doorman/concierge (um, what exactly do they do, anyway)? $5 though sometimes more if they are 'influential'. i tipped the concierge at a hotel in vegas $100 and we got well taken care of the entire weekend we were there.
Tow-truck driver (for unlocking your car, bringing gas, changing a tire, jump start, etc.)? $10
Full-service gas-station attendant (where they wash your windows and check your oil)? I never do this.

Re: How Much Do You Tip?
Tue, October 17, 2006 - 8:50 AMFor a meal/drinks at a restaurant, ordered from a waiter/waitress? 15% - 20%
For drinks ordered directly from a bartender? $1 per, though I'm know to leave a quarter if they ignore for too long. It's just enough to let them know that I didn't just forget to tip them.
For counter-service food (deli, bakery, etc.)? Whatever spare change I have, or a buck if they were exceptionally nice
At a coffeeshop? 50 cent minimum, up to about $1.50.
Taxi driver/shuttle bus driver/tour guide? Taxi: I figure it out on the fly. Others don't happen
At a salon (hair styling, manicures, waxing, etc.)? ~$5
Maids/housekeepers (at a hotel or wherever)? ~$5, whatever I have in singles.
Valet parking attendant? I park my own hooptie
Porter/bellhop (person who carries your bags)? I carry my own bags.
Doorman/concierge (um, what exactly do they do, anyway)? I find my own diversions.
Tow-truck driver (for unlocking your car, bringing gas, changing a tire, jump start, etc.)? I hope I don't have to tip the tow truck driver who just charged me $80 for 30 minutes work.
Full-service gas-station attendant (where they wash your windows and check your oil)? DIY -

Pretty much what KC said... but usually rarely have to call a tow-truck driver and when I had in the past I wasn't aware you're supposed to tip them, I wish I'd have known. I typically do 20% on most places as a general rule of thumb though.

Re: How Much Do You Tip?
Sun, November 29, 2009 - 4:09 PMGod all those long answers. Tip or your sevice you received! about 10% for meals and if they guy or gal tote your crap a long ways ( was it heavy)????. Judge by them, the service and what they had to go thru to get your stuff to room. A dollar a bag is WRONG! Just Tip. SDealers need tips 10% again.. Start with 10%
I once was a a five start hotel...early in Morning about five suites, me casual, waiting while one lone valet was getting cars.. They were tipping him a buck. Cheap ass holes!!!!. I gave him a twenty. He deserved it. Never broke his service attitude.
