Should I ditch my camp?

Almighty Bunring Man, I am sure you are already on the playa but need to ask for your sage advice.

I wanted to add one more person to our 18 person camp and was shot down by my friends. This person has a less than perfect past but is a good person at heart and in my opinion has changed for the better over the course of the last 3 years. Am I overly idealistic in putting my faith in someone who may end up making me look bad after I've vouched for him? I feel like I want to ditch my camp and camp by myself this year. Would that send too hostile a message to my friends? Would I be creating unnecessary drama? Am I wrong to think they aren't being good burners by exlcuding someone who is being judged by one person's opinion of his past? I don't want to start a shit storm 4 days before me and the landing crew hit playa dust. Advice? Snarky remark? Anything?

dear bunring man,

do you think that the economy and current theme may be associated with the lackluster spirit (thus far) for the upcoming burn? so far, i've been sensing lower energy among my social circles. i am curious if you feel any shifts too.

and if so, how you (being the man and all) feel about being in the center of it all.

yours,

Overseas seeking RV rental

Friends and aliens,
Last years burn was our first, my wifes and mine, and this year we're coming home again...
This is the thing - we're coming over from Israel and trying to pre-arrange a few things from over here. Last year we were tenting, which was great, and this year we decided to get an RV and see how it is. Prices from rentals is way high now and I'd rather give some money to private people than a company.
So anyone got an RV and not coming this year? We'd love to rent one from a fellow burner. The details are:
Pick-up and Drop-off SF area, between 8/23-9/4 and our budget is around 2500$.
Since we plan to be out on the playa as much as we can, a small reliable unit is all we need. We're both good experienced drivers, over 30, and I got a cousin living in SF (teaching at SFSU) that can vouch for us personally.
Please help,
Dan

Dear The Burning Man,

I recently got into a discussion about how photographs from the playa can be used to harm the people in them, when posted to public internet sites. Several people expressed concerns that they could unknowingly be viewed by employers, friends and family and cause a great deal of harm.

What do you advise on this matter.

Sparkling Pork Soda

Dear Sparkling Pork Soda,

I advise you do nothing.
Nothing because, in fact,
you can not stop images from Burningman from showing up in the public view.

This has nothing to do with Hippies Gone Wild Videos or freelance photographers posting shots of critical tits.

It has to do with the fact that,
every participant at Burningman
gave their permission to have photographs of them
posted on the internet ,
at the front gate.

Burningman LLC can use any image taken at the event as they see fit.

While a person can surly write to them and say” please take my picture down, I don’t want my boss to see it” that does not mean Burningman is accountable for posting it in the first place.

I think photographers should ignore anyone who comes at him with righteousness in their pocket and best intentions on their mask. Do gooder, we know best, nose poking millions step aside.

Have some faith,
have some trust,
learn to build not to censor.

If you don’t, you are speculating problems. Making problems, Fearing problems, Inventing problems, Focusing on problems, being a problem.

This is not radical problem solving,
it's cookie cutter reactions to fear, insecurity and distrust.

If anyone wanted to do anything about their photo posted on the net,
they wouldn't go to Burningman.

Let it go.

Dear The Burning Man,

I want to go to Burningman This year but I"m going back to school.
I feel like I really need to be out on the playa this year, But I'm afraid of missing school.

What should I do?

Sincerely,
Jason

Dear Jason,

Go to school. No wait...
Go to Burningman.

well, maybe you should go to school.

Flip a coin.

Wait I know.

If your not decisive enough to make a decision on your own , then you must need the schooling. Go to school.

But if your in a lame ass liberal arts program or community college, Go to Bunringman.

If other people will like you more if you go to one or the other , Go to that one.

1.) What has been your favorite base / platform?

2.) Have your lights always been green?

3.) If given the option, would you take a year off from burning?

Dear Burning Man,

I have a theory that somewhere, someone fucked up. They put skirts on women and pants on men when everyone KNOWS men's legs are better looking, if somewhat hairier. I believe kilts rectify this situation somewhat, but not entirely. Those damn utilitkilts don't do a thing for it since to me they look like shorts with pleats---kilts need to be in PLAID, dammit.

But I digress.

My question is--would the Burning Man wear a skirt?

Dear The Burning Man ~Art Nouveau

Dear The Burning Man

Read the blurb and answer the questions;

Art Nouveau
The arabesque, the floral or animal pattern and the feminine silhouette are the typical motifs of this international decorative style that emerged in Brussels around 1900.

This important artistically avant-gardist movement appeared, at the turn of the 20th century (1890-1914), in all of Europe’s big cities as a reaction against the academic schools. Followers of the movement all subscribed to its underlying principle, namely that the essence of aesthetics should be sought in nature rather than ancient Classicist renditions.

First coined by some Belgian art critics as the 19th century drew to a close, the expression 'Art Nouveau' really began catching on internationally in Paris with the opening in 1895 of the art gallery Maison Art Nouveau by the famous German art dealer Siegfried Bing.

The essence of Art Nouveau is described by sensuous lines and subtle light, feminine figures and curly hair, fluent dresses and attitudes, vegetal curves and willow leaves, twisting waves and evanescent smoke, but also by controlled lines, geometric details, colorful new shapes and Art Nouveau was a new art form, an original artistic and decorative movement inspired by the idea of "total art".

The violent mutation created by the Industrial Revolution at the turn of the century led the way to all kind of new ideas, attempts and creative innovations in the fields of architecture and interior design, furniture and fabrics, glass and tableware, jewelry and perfume bottles, posters and wallpaper, textiles and lighting.

New materials were used and combined, such as metal and glass or wood, creating admirable objects and buildings.

Partly inspired by Japanese art which was changing the western attitude to Art (as painters as Monet, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Ensor, Munch, Matisse or Toulouse-Lautrec would later confirm), but also influenced by Celtic, Gothic and Rococo art, the leaders of Art Nouveau refused to continue to differentiate "lower applied and decorative art forms" and "higher fine arts". They wanted to create a modern way of life, to invent new shapes and free lines, where the structure and the decorative elements would form one unique work of art, a total and harmonious artistic environment Nature and Life were chosen as inspiring sources creating emotions and feelings in all forms of visual arts such as painting, architecture, decorative arts and graphic design, but also in literature with Baudelaire, Rilke, Hofmannsthal, D'Annunzio, Proust, Maeterlinck, Ibsen,... or in music with Debussy, Sibelius, Strauss and many others.

This explosion of senses and the return to nature was a pretext for a new concept of art and the first visual attempt of modernity.

OK

1. Don't you think the blurb makes the founders of Art Nouveau sound like a bunch of hypocrites? Do you think this rejection for the old ways had anything to do with the post-modern movement of chaos?

BM~ No, I don't think the founders of Art Nouveau were a bunch of hypocrites (even if it appears that way in the blurb) This is because in the context that art Nouveau was defining itself, the general public and the art establishment (art museums) of the day rejected any forms of art that did not mimic the classical method of the day.
Nouveau was exploring not only what things looked like but the entire approach to how art was produced, thus challenging the very core of art definitions. The Modern movement of chaos was not widespread enough for anyone to financially benefit from it, until after futurism became popular around World War 1. Thus, the decorative aspects of Art Nouveau were not attractive until it's founders had suffered enough to get people's attention, by then the movement had a populist eye to it, and not a fundamental understanding.
They bought pretty shit, but had no idea what it meant.

Not hypocrisy, but unfortunate.

2. What's your favorite piece of Art Nouveau? Building? Artist? Letter design? Lamp?

My favorite work of Nouveau is the Botique Frouquet (1901)
A collaboration between Alphonse Mucha and the jewelry designer Georges Frouquet.
It was the only commissioned work of it's type that stood as a prime example of the synthesis of art as propagated by the ideas of Nouveau.

3. How do the characteristics of Art Nouveau reflect the state of mind of 1900? It had to have been somewhat universal or it would not have caught on.

BM~ In actuality, the Characteristics of Art Nouveau reflected the state of mind of the day, the way Norman Rockwell pictures reflect American Life of the fifties, all dream.

The truth is that Art Nouveau died out because the dreams of a a sleek shinny, organic transition between the old world and the new industrial world turned out to be dirty, rough and unaffordable.
It is liken to seeing our future as either start trek, or like blade runner.

Art Nouveau had the vision, but the public did not have the skill to build it.
Ultimately, art Nouveau became the enemy of social movements that declared dream time was over. Like communism were expensive and elaborate luxuries were seen as enemies of the community welfare.

What was once a brilliant way of seeing, became a social taboo.

and no, you should not beat yourself for not going to art school.
It would have only diluted your own true voice.

Oh yeah, and fine art is a lot like porn.
IF you get off on it, it’s fine art. If not, it’s just art.

This one time at Burningman, after I awoke from a slightly drugged induced inclination to build a scultpture out of things I found stuck in th etrash fence, I heard a voice in my head,
It said
" I am The Burningman"
and I said. "woah like that"s your playa name? That's cool."

"No, No. ..I'm the"Real" Burningman.

" yeah ok ... well' if your the Real Burningman, than what is that?"
I said pointing to the Giant wooden sculpture in the center of Black Rock City.

And the voice said "That's a Giant wooden sculpture in the center of Black Rock City"

so I'm like "cool"

Then the voice described in detail about how I was supposed to be some sort of channel for his wisdom wit and wacky obscura and I would have to answer questions made of him.

I said ok.

This is the first question I got via a mind letter.

"Dear the Burning man,

What is the differnce between a spectator and a participant? How can you be one without being the otehr as well?

Yours truley,
Elvis

Dear Elvis,

The difference between being a spectator or a participant has to do with intent.
A Spectator's intent is to absorb an experience.
A Participants intent is to create an experience.

While it may be impossible to always be one without the other, it is also true that a person can be mostly one or the other. This comes down to potential. a person has great potential to absorb experience, or to create it.

Some common misconceptions about participantion are assuming that a costume fullfills great potential to participate, or that lack of one fullfills great potential as a spectator.

The easiest way to be a spectator is to party.
The easiest way to be a participant, is to make art.

The Burning Man

Dear The Burning Man,

Why does the Burningman Tribe suck so bad?

Sicerely,
Larry Harvey

Dear Larry,
The Burningman Tribe does not suck so bad If compared to any of the politiacal tribes.

the other thing to remember is that most of the people who use tribe, are single and are addicted to vehicles for exterior validation. "I post therefore I am". Most people are unawre that they are not actually participating but rather feeding self spectatorship.
While this is not always true, it represents the bulk of post that do not end up creating, or building, or inspiring anything besides, the post itself.

Most real Burners do not use the internat to feel connected. They are to busy being connected.

As you once said " It wasn't about community. It was community"
