Tips for grooming/shaving long hair cat???

Hi all. I'm new here and was hoping to get some advice for shaving our beautiful long hair cat, Thelonious (aka BabyT). He just gets the most awful hairballs, no matter how often I brush him, and I think it's time to try something more serious. I'm just terrified that he's going to choke one day. In addition to the hairball problem he tends to get poop stuck around what I will call "his pants." He's almost 10 now and I'm not sure if he's just getting lazy when it comes to taking care down there or we also moved from a very warm climate to a milder one so maybe he's just not shedding as much??

He does really well when we bathe him provided my husband and I do it together. And I routinely cut his hair with scissors but have yet to try electric clippers.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

i like cat, especially the wild cats, the one that are born in the streets. They grow up to be so smart but its too bad most are affraid of humans.
I always keep some fresh water outside so they can have a clean drink.

My brothers cat, Tiger, came home the other day with a large bite to his hind quarters. He had to have several stitches. The vets took good care of him, and he will make a full recovery. But he is not a very happy kitty right now. I"m sure it still hurts. And that collar cannot be that comfortable to sleep with.

My Kitty Died Today....

This morning my hun and I could not find her.I thought she was hiding or playing peek-a-boo with us (again)..I jumped in the shower on to come out with my hun telling me she suffocated by accident by sticking her head inside the dryer pipe.She was stiff as a board.She's gone now. My poor Flower. I will not post a pic because I took them off right now.I can't see them because I will just start crying again.....Rainbow ran away weeks ago,now my flower dies.....I think I will put off getting a new cat. I hope she is ok. Please pray for her. thanks....

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - Some kitty math: How many lives did little tabby Gracie Mae use up when she crawled into her owner's suitcase, went through an airport X-ray machine, got loaded onto a plane, thrown onto a baggage belt and mistakenly picked up by a stranger far from home?

"She's got to be at four or five now," Seth Levy said after his 10-month-old pet was returned Sunday night by a kind stranger who went home to Fort Worth, Texas, with the wrong bag and Gracie inside to boot.

The last time Levy's wife, Kelly, saw Gracie was before she took her husband to the airport. The 24-year-old went back to her house in Palm Beach Gardens late Friday to find the bottom step, where Gracie would usually be waiting, empty.

She tore the house apart looking for the cat, who had been spayed just days before. She and her dad took out bathroom tiles and part of a cabinet to check a crawl space and papered the neighborhood with "lost cat" signs.

Then she got a phone call.

"Hi, you're not going to believe this, but I am calling from Fort Worth, Texas, and I accidentally picked up your husband's luggage. And when I opened the luggage, a cat jumped out," Kelly Levy quoted the caller saying.

Rob Carter said he made it home with the suitcase before realizing it wasn't his — and there was a big surprise inside.

"I went to unpack and saw some of the clothes and saw it wasn't my suitcase," he said. "I was going to close it, and a kitten jumped out and ran under the bed. I screamed like a little girl."

Carter said that he eventually was able to get the cat to come out from under the bed.

"In the morning, I got close enough to see its collar and the phone number on it," he said. "So I called the number and got a hold of the crying wife of the traveler."

The tabby made the 1,300-mile trip home on an $80 plane ticket. Carter said he considered keeping the cat before he knew she had a home.

"We were going to name it Suitcase," he said.

Mama cat wants nothing to do with kittens

My kittens are 6 months old. Momma kitty went into heat about 3 weeks ago, and prefers the basement, she doesn't want to be around the kittens who are all male. I have coaxed her upstairs finally, and she is on the stairway hissing at the kittens. She has hit at me and bitten me for coming near her when the kittens are near.

What is wrong? How can I fix this? I don't want to leave her in dark scary basement all alone, besides, it's not my house, I share basement with landlord and I'm sure he will not be happy to find she has taken up residence down there.

Normally she is sweet and loves to be petted, but whenever a kitten is nearby, she will his and bite me, too. What can I do?

She was good momma, breastfed them for a long time, protected them from me. lol-when I would pick them up when they were small, she would pick them off me and bring them back to the nest area. She would watch me carefully whenever i played with them, until they were about 4 months or so, and bigger. She was so good with them, now she wants nothing to do with them, and of course they want to be around her. what is wrong and what do I do?

I hit my cat alot when I get upset or I feel a anger from inside. I don't know why,but I wish I didn't. I really want to be nice to him,and I leave him alone but it had been weeks since this happend and now I did it again. I feel really bad,and I don't want to get threatening letters for this. I really don't want to get rid of my cats,but I feel I should let them go,but I don't know how to tell my roommates about what I do to him.I feel really bad and cry all the time over it . I really wish he would like me,maybe it is that,that makes me so mad. i got him as a baby and ever since then,I cannot get him to interact or even get near me,then all went to hell when I did this to him.

Does anyone recommend me do something,besides giving him away.I really don't want to,but if it is the best thing for him,I will. THanks...

I have two 2 month old cats. I was just told by the woman who gave them to me that she got rid of them bc she would hit them when they were bad ..I did notice them jump and rum from me a lot but, I was not sure. Now my suspiciousness was right.

Now, my wonder is...will they ever recover from that??? How can I help them recover?? How do you train your cats or how do u make or teach them the good and bad???

The last is..how ever so often do you take them to the vet??? If my cats are 2months old,should I cut their claws???

does any one have any tips on breaking a cat from getting on counter! I recently adopted a 5 year old rambunctious male (neutered) cat.He is a one great cat, expect he thinks he can get on the counter, kitchen sink, and eat what he might find. When we catch him he gets squirted with water, but it doesn't seem to phase him a lot. So now he gets squirted when he goes in the kitchen. He has improved, but today he found the trash!! Very bad. My hubby who eats meat, put chicken bones in the trash and Vinadloo, couldn't resit, and knocked over the can popped the lid and went for the tasty scraps! I told my husband that if he too went gave up meat and joined the vegetarian world of yum, then the cat wouldn't find anything of interest! But that's not going to happen! So I'm hoping someone might have an idea or two to change vin's badness to goodness!!

kittens need home in Los Angeles

Hello All,
Last night I found two kittens in my back yard tree. I would keep them but my four dogs want to snack on them. If you or anyone you know may want to adopt or even just foster these cats until I can find a suitable home I would appreciate any help.
They are 6 to 8 weeks old, a little skinny but eating dry food, a little dirty but cleaning up and have no fleas. The female is calico and the male white shorthair. They are very human friendly and like to be held, petted, and played with. They are a great pair and can amuse themselves playing together. The two have the loudest motors I’ve ever heard from small cats and you can hear them purring from across the room. Best of all, they are litter trained and have only used the box since coming inside.
Please pass on my information to anyone you know that may be able to offer assistance with placing these kittens. My cell phone is: 323-708-8095.

Anyone who owns a cat is probably an expert in the ways that cats are — and aren’t — domesticated. In fact, no creature exemplifies the idea that domesticated animals chose domestication better than cats, which demonstrate every day just who in the human-feline relationship is doing the choosing.

Exactly how those first cats found a home among us is still a matter of speculation, though it very likely comes down to the rodents among us. But where and when those cats first turned tame has suddenly become much clearer.

Based on a study of mitochondrial DNA in five Old World feline subspecies, scientists have now concluded that domestic cats are descended from the Near Eastern wildcat, or Felis silvestris lybica, a native of the deserts of the Middle East. Domestication probably took place 10,000 to 12,000 years ago, and the oldest known archeological link between humans and cats comes from Cyprus, some 9,500 years ago.

This new genetic evidence resolves the puzzle of cat remains turning up in Cyprus before the rise of the Egyptian civilizations that were supposed to have domesticated the cat.

The wild subspecies that gave up their DNA for these tests still exist, though barely. That is one of the painful ironies of domestication. Creatures who come in from the wild eventually prosper — domestic cats number, after all, in the hundreds of millions — while those who don’t almost inevitably fall upon hard times.

And that, too, is one of the paradoxes of understanding domestication. We cannot know exactly what we have made our own — whether it is animal or vegetable — unless we know the wild state in which it originated. Which is another way of saying that without wildness, we have no way of knowing who we are either.

Help I have a big biting problem

I love my human very much and I am sweet most of the time. However, when I get playful I start to bite my human then I run around the room and jump and attack her like she is a toy. When she pushes me off, I just come back wilder.

I am not afraid of water so the spray bottle trick does not work on me. I am getting bigger and stronger. This morning after she spent a long time petting me, I bit her so hard I broke the skin and drew blood.

My human is at a lose of what to do. I am the first male cat she has ever had and she thought that after I was neutered I would mellow out. I didn't.

I am still a kitten of 8 months, so I should be able to break this habit.

Any of you older cats have some advice for me?

Poor Venture!

We've had our windows open for the past few days, enjoying the breezes. The cats have been napping on the sills.

It got too warm here yesterday, so we closed the windows and turned on the air.

Bless him, Venture didn't look this morning before he ran into our room and jumped into the window, crashing his poor little head into the glass.

Can cats fly?

One of my cats (she is of the breed known as Chartreux), always finds a perch at the highest point in the house. And what amazes me is that there are times when I can't see any way she got up that high without flying.

Take the top of my refrigerator. That used to be her favorite spot in my old apartment....and there was no way she could have gotten up there in steps.....she had to either jump from the floor to the to, or fly.

At my present apartment, there is a shelf at the top of my closet. It's higher than the top of the refrigerator. When I come home from work, and come through the door, I hear 'thump', and she comes running to greet me....but i know she was on top of the closet. I've seen her there many times.

So, is she simply the cat equivalent of an olympic long jumper, or is she flying, or teleporting herself to great heights?

My other cat shows absolutely no interest in heights. He sits on a pillow I gave him on the floor, or on my bed, when he's not on my lap.
I don't know if he just has no interest in high places, or if he can't make it that high. I only know that the two cats were raised together, and he never picked up the height thing from her.

Every once in a while, Max leaves a small hairball for me somewhere in the house. He says its a present (just like the half dead mice), but I'm not so sure... Is this true? Is he giving me a gift or telling me what he really thinks of me??

Barfing

My human is worried about me.

I've been barfing off and on since Saturday. I've been eating grass outside too.

I still eat food, drink, use the litterbox.. bug the heck out of her...

But I have been barfing - at least once a day. She's all worried about me. I keep trying to tell her I'll be ok and it will pass.

But last night.. she had a friend over to install a phone jack for her TiVo. They move the entertainment center.. I was behind there trying to help but I couldn't hold the screwdriver with my furpaws...

So I stood there and meowed orders to them.

Cheating On Brian

Well he's been gone about two days and i've already found a new family unit. Rodger is the dad with his warm TV box and readiness to play 'wheelbarrow' with me and Super Amanda lets me play with her corset strings and gives me albacore..meowyummy!
My question is: how do I keep a good thing goin with these two and let Brian back into my life? I want to have my 'Pounce' and eat it too!!

Well my human is having a bad week at work and dealing with personal affairs.. she's been really stressed out and apologizes for not letting me on the computer so much this week.

That's ok.. I woke her up at 3:30 this morning and barfed hair/slime all over the floor.

Can someone take over mod for next week? I know my human would like to get that off her plate and hopes she can free up the computer next time for me.

Hmmm.. what's next.. I haven't peed on the floor in a while.. hmm.

I personally like sitting on the computer monitor where it's warm or in the bathroom window. Sometimes I like to be at the head of the bed under the lamp where it's warm too. Being on the top of the piano is good cuz then I'm at eye level with the two leggeds.

Personally, I don't care for pork. Beef and Chicken are okay. Fish has got to be my favorite. She has tried to bring home roe for treat though and I don't like it. Just gimme straight tuna in water (no oil) from the can. I could eat that all day.

My human brought her friend over to watch the Steelers game, eat dinner and have sex.

I waited until the middle of the game to barf 3 times all over the living room.

Then I waited until they were done having sex to come in and announce I wanted fed.

I want to share this and I just hate to be so contrary...
I'm just not sure I'm getting the "best" advice from my cat

ok, so... me and Trixie (the tabby that I feed and change litter for and take care of) are talking the other day... and I'm off whinnning once again, about how long I've been single, and how tired I am of it, and how it would be nice to get some... "love-action"...

and in the middle of my tirade Trixie gets up walks over to me on hind legs and smacks me upside the back of the head with left paw...
then in a rather frustrated way... tells me to stop my whining and go out to the alley and just go get me some tail.

I guess she meant well... but, well....

oh I don't know...

A cat has set up home in a bird's nest in Norfolk, England. Wendy Hobbs, from Reepham, first spotted the cat up the tree a week ago. She was about to phone the fire brigade when she noticed the stray had set up home in the nest. The cat only leaves the cherry tree to beg for food at her back door then climbs back up the tree.

Mrs Hobbs said: "I don't know why she loves the tree. She sits there watching the traffic. My husband and I think the nest must have been a pigeon's because it's so messy."

Mrs Hobbs has tried to find the cat's owners, she added: "We have phoned the vet's and apparently there have been no cats reported missing.

"I'm sure someone must be looking for her and I've put adverts up everywhere."

Chasing bugs

Don't you just love when an insect invader dares to come into your home? I love to watch bugs for hours at a time. I even catch one once in a while and eat it -- or get a taste, and if it's nasty, I leave it half-dead on the floor and walk away.

Bugs are the enemy! Make sure to be on guard for them at all times. Your human will thank you for it!
